Darius Morris on "The Butterfly"

Submitted by umfan on

Although this was assumed, the truth finally came out of Darius Morris after the game on Saturday. I was outside the locker room talking to a few players after the game and after waiting a while I finally got to talk to Darius. I asked him what he thought about the nickname BTN gave him: the Butterfly, he gave me the same answer that he repeats over and over in interviews but after a slight pause he admitted what he really thinks of the nickname "I'm just honored that they gave me a nickname........ but I wish they'd change it." I know this was assumed but I found it amusing that he admitted it. And BTW For those of you who didn't know (idk if they mentioned it on TV or not) he played with "flu-like" symptoms on Saturday. I was suprised when he told me because he still played pretty well.

Anyway, I thought this stuff was interesting. GO BLUE!!!! Beat Illinois!

Someone needs to get Tim Doyle's cell number to Darius.

Also, I think big10football negs every single mgoboard topic.  It seems whenever I click on a thread and it has a lone neg, it is always that guy.

Also also, I would avoid the self-posbang.

My 6 year old daughter hates that nickname or maybe it's just Doyle's insistance on using it in every sentence.

Everytime Doyle is on B10 Network she says, "Not the Butterfly guy again!  Make him stop"

Seems like someone from the Athletic Dept should place a call to the BTN and politely suggest alternate nicknames.  These things can be finessed and the BTN should be telling Doyle that his nickname is not exactly one that a player would EVER like.

Someone (it may have been here; I can't remember) proposed that his nickname become "The Monarch."  That would work.  Doyle could keep his dumb analogy without resorting to an emasculating nickname, and everyone else could call him that because of his floor leadership.  Plus, there's some alliteration: Darius "The Monarch" Morris.

I propose that a nickname shouldn't be force fed by a fairly weak TV guy who repeats it endlessly in hopes that someone else might actually pick it up.  Maybe if he calls Keith Appling the "Ladybug", then it'd be all good.  Embarrassing nicknames for all!

It is great to hear these types of stories. Sounds like although Morris isn't a big fan of his nickname at least he is appreciative that he is getting some recognition.

Frankly, I'd rather read this type of first hand account than the opinions (frequently negative) of many posters (mods included). TomVH should be the example for others to follow - he puts in the time to interview people and provides solid information. He is an excellent reporter who is also happens to be a big Michigan fan.
