Schilling does well at Combine
Well it's a pretty blah day but I saw that Schilling put up one of the best bench press numbers for the OL (30), but more importantly beat Boren (28). He also had one of the best agility times in the 20 yd shuttle and did ok in the 40yd dash. No shocker that Schilling dusted Boren in the 40 where Boren had one of the worst times at the combine. I guess Boren really doesn't like running.
For some reason Schilling can't jump very well Boren beat him there. Boo.

Great news. I am hoping for a 3rd/4th round pickup for our guy!
February 27th, 2011 at 11:52 AM ^
is that he is drafted before Boren.
February 27th, 2011 at 2:35 PM ^
Boren is PLOWING through the combine.
Maybe he rather be riding a combine?
He sure doesn't run like a John Deere.
That’s all the farming references I could think of.
February 27th, 2011 at 4:37 PM ^
He doesn't have CAT-like quickness.

all the way back to Columbus.

It's extremely likely that Schilling is drafted first. Schilling is probably going to be drafted in the 4th or 5th round. Boren probably won't be taken until the 6th or 7th, if he's drafted at all.
February 27th, 2011 at 11:59 AM ^
The irony in his (Boren) 40yd time is hilarious to me...
February 27th, 2011 at 12:22 PM ^
I don't see the irony.

all I care about is that Boren flames out, doesn't play on Sundays, and has to spend the rest of his life in that state down south. those who whine will never be champions.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:12 PM ^
Boren has ever done is transfer...and waddle to the training table.

You know you like her. Justin Boren sure did.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:17 PM ^
that Boren's 40 yard dash was timed by sun dial.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:25 PM ^
Would be nice to see Schilling picked up by the Lions. I loved the guy and would like to continue to root for him on Sundays. Although, I do feel bad wishing the Lions on him.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:28 PM ^
1. Why would the Lions draft him? They have Sims and Peterman. Peterman had a broken foot all last year, that's why he was playing so poorly.
2. Don't wish the Lions on him? If you haven't noticed, the Lions are on the uprise.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:33 PM ^
1. I doubt anyone's going to draft Schilling to be an immediate starter.
2. The Lions have been on the upswing for a couple decades...

since 1957
February 27th, 2011 at 7:00 PM ^
Ended in 1958, when they lost to the College All Stars. Not many NFL champions succeeded in losing to the College All Stars, but the Lions were up to the task.
And they had totally dominated the Browns at the Championship game in December, 1957.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:45 PM ^
1. Can always use a good lineman.
2. I am all about how we have been rebuilding but don't forget all the problems we have. We have terrible ownership for a sports team and it's shown. Just because we won the last 3 games I'm not going to forget the past 10 years. On top of this our division has become extremely competitive and we have the largest holes. A reasonable projection next year for this team is 8-8. Unless of course you are one of those calling for Lions in the playoffs next year...
February 27th, 2011 at 12:54 PM ^
HEY!
It was FOUR in a row, not THREE. Respect the roar.
February 27th, 2011 at 7:28 PM ^
1. Who says/Who knows if Schilling will be good?
2. If you had watched the Lions this year you would know that they should have won 8 games and your calling for 8 next year? The 2 other games that absolutely should have won is the Jets and Bears game (week 1 - infamous Calvin play). Stafford doesn't go down against the Jets, they win. No doubt. Next season I believe they play the whole NFC West, there's a few wins there. (NFCW is garbage) I think they win at least 9 games next season, probably more. They're one corner (Alphonso Smith is a nickel corner not a starter imo), one/two LBs away from Playoffs imo. Could they use an upgrade at OL? Sure but it's not their #1 need. And don't say, "Well look at Stafford. He keeps getting hurt.", yeah, well..most of the injuries are Stafford's fault. (The only exception is probably week 1 last season) The Jets game was his fault. The Cleveland game last year was a freak injury. The Bears game where he tweaked his knee wasn't the O-Lines fault. He was scramblin' and tweaked it.
3. Quit being a downer.
February 27th, 2011 at 7:55 PM ^
1. OL is a very hard position to project and a lot flame out. Who knows if he is going to be good? If we don't know if a player is going to be good we can't draft them? Why use any draft pick then? Based on his career at Michigan I love the guy and think he's a solid player. My god I suggest we draft a player everyone likes in the mid-rounds and we develop him.
2. Yes, we were screwed in the Bears game. Jets game... we jumped offside 2 plays in a row and extended their game winning drive. Jets game we gave away but it’s still a losing effort. Secondly, how can you project an entire game with one injury? Who says he does not throw 2 picks in the next quarter if healthy? You can not generalize an entire game because of that injury. With Stafford I question him as a player all around. The guy has 2 great complete games in 2 years and every Lions fan is saying he's a pro bowler. Do I want him to be a pro bowler? Yes. Do we really know if he will be? No. Do I want the Lions to do great? Obviously. Sorry I am keeping my expectations reasonable when looking at this teams history.
3. Right back at ya. Sorry you had to jump on me for wanting the Lions to use a mid-round pick on a Wolverine.
February 27th, 2011 at 5:32 PM ^
Having a broken foot has nothing to do with Peterman's insistence on getting at least one false start penalty nearly every game. Nor being a below-average NFL guard his entire career.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:46 PM ^
Rich Eisen thinks Boren is slow.
Okay, so he actually beat Eisen's time, but it was only 3/4 of a second faster. Eisen's a 42 year old desk jockey. COME ON, MAN!
February 27th, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
They can't let anyone touch Stafford. It would be cool to have Schilling but they need starters up front.
I haven't seen an exact number for SS on Mel Kiper's list but he has him in 4th or 5th currently. Another site had him in 130's and Boren in 80's, but after the combine I think that will change.
Who cares that he can't jump high, how many O-lineman are jumping up to make blocks? Don't think that will hurt.
February 27th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
measures explosion, not how high you can jump.
February 27th, 2011 at 4:20 PM ^
And here all this time I thought vertical jump was a measure of the distance a player could jump veritcally in the air. Even more convenient that Explosion uses feet and inches as measuring units.
Learn something new everyday.

How'd they finish in the plow-pulling event?
February 27th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
Was miles ahead of everyone in the feed bag eating portion of the combine. Kid can obviously put down some chow.
February 27th, 2011 at 1:52 PM ^
Boren is good at getting in front of people and pushing them around provided they don't, you know, have any real moves or agility- it works in the Big Ten/college but I suspect he'll be exposed in the pros when almost everyone is far more athletic. I mean, Brandon Graham manhandled him two years ago, and almost every team has a player or two like Graham on the front line, or at least a reasonable facsimile. It will be interesting to see how some of the old RR OL do in the pros - athletic linemen are more important than behemouths.

If a laugh at Boren's expense is wrong, I don't want to be right.
February 27th, 2011 at 7:07 PM ^
I'm from Jersey, you learn not to disrepect "The Family" when you grow up there. That's what Boren did. One does not easily forget this kind of disrespect directed towards one's family.

Thanks for posting that link. I have been surprised at the lack of specifics on ESPN or NFL.com as compared to the site you linked to.
Looks like Schilling had the #2 bench and #2 40-time for Offensive Guards. Go Blue!

Steve has been training with some of the top prospects at Athletes Performance in AZ. I'm also there rehabbing the dreaded sports hernia injury ... but enough about me. Anyhow, I've had a chance to see the pretty intense program there, working on all sorts of physical skills, as well as prepping them for the interviews, wonderlick test, etc. Those guys, including Schilling work their a$$es off while there.
Good to see he was willing to put in the hard work. Hope it pays off.
