Weis; What is it you say you do here?

Submitted by mbrummer on

"The more physical attack will come under a new play-caller. Weis, who helped guide the New England Patriots to three Super Bowls, has turned the play-calling duties over to Haywood."

quote from Tom Coyne Assosicated Press

Um...big departure from the man who according to the national media (NBC) announcers invented football, came up with the West Coast Offense, cured cancer, and invented the modern forward pass.

Since i'm sure Weis spends no time with the defense, what does weis do. Hand over his playbook after implementing his offesne in practice , which any guy who can dissect the NFL can give you. Well at least he's good with the media and doesn't put his foot in his mouth. Oh wait to hell with michigan. At least he inspirational. Um ok maybe not.

So the guy who led the New England offesne to 3 Super Bowls can't even be counted on to beat Navy? Maybe like all of Notre Dame the hype outweighs production and don't tell anybody but Bill Belichek is pretty good and New England has been better (offensively) since he left.

However with Notre Dame will rebound with 8-9 wins because of Cupcake rich schedule and Weis will be considered a genius for putting aside his ego to let his offensive coordinator take over and everyone dies a little inside once more.

"Maybe like all of Notre Dame the hype outweighs production..." Considering Weis is the "hype", I think it's a given that he outweighs just about everything, including production.

I think ESPN made it clear that Charlie Weis's offense can be effectively run by an 12 year old boy on his deathbed.

I think I'm going to hell for making that previous statement.

He has 3 straight excellent classes and may have his best one this year. Sooner or later that has to show up on the field or ND will have to eat his contact while CW eats everything else.

I hate the guy, but the NE offense also has Randy Moss and Laurence Maroney now, instead of Troy Brown and a rotating cast of hobos at RB.

the whole "Spy Gate" episode happened while Weis was there. Calling plays is a whole lot easier when you study/know the opposing coaches signals. Ex. Northwestern '97 and previous years.

Weis' issue has been player development. He can recruit. And he may be able to call a decent game. (This is debatable given his odd play calling on fourth down against Navy and his decision to install the spread for G. Tech and then run off the QB who was to run it, but I digress.)

But his issue to date has been a complete inability to turn his young talent into quality football players. The team he brought to Michigan Stadium last year was the single worst football team I have ever seen take the field since I first had season tickets in 1990. That team was worse than any of the MAC patsies we paid to come in and lose. And the only explanation for it is that they were poorly coached/developed.

They should win more games this year because their schedule is easier, but last year's schedule wasn't so difficult that it can explain 3-9. Of their 9 loses, only Navy was less than 13 points. GT 33-3, PSU 31-10, UofM 38-0, MSU 31-14, Purdue 33-19, BC 27-14, USC 38-0, Navy 46-44, Air Force 41-24. The only team on that schedule that ND should have EXPECTED to lose to was USC. Every other game should have been competitive -- but Fat Chuck didn't have his players ready to play.

Hiring Tenuta was a brilliant move. He is a highly respected COLLEGE coach who will likely be better prepared to develop the talent on the roster. The better question is why is Tenuta not the head coach and Weis not the director of recruiting?

...that the training wheels comes off and this is FINALLY CW's team? By the way! The most important recruit/change was the hiring of Tenuta as his D cord who I would have love to have wanted to be on our sideline. However,Coach Schafer seems to want unleash the Wolverines this season...life is good!

I didn't realize that his coaching responsibilities included the LBs. I knew that he came in as the Assistant HC. I have to imagine that the only reason he didn't get the DC title was that they had just brought Corn Flakes in as DC the year before. I suspect that his role involves overseeing a lot of the team and trying to teach Fat Chuck how to be a college head coach and not an NFL coordinator.
