How close were the top choices? 1-3 in particular you could make extremely good cases for.

What would he have to do to be considered a 'breakout' player?

Break Bobby Boucher's record for single game sacks.

But....I really want to see Will Campbell wreak some havoc.

This coaching hire is a match made in heaven for him. Hoke acted as his own defensive line coach at San Diego State, and even took orders from the D-Coordinator during practice and games. As we all know, it his speciality. Campbell will get plenty of attention from the head guy and then you couple Montgomery bringing a younger voice. The situation is intriguing as heck. Mattison's 4-man fronts are also a better fit. Basically you gotta figure that if Will meets them halfway by bringing the desire to reach is potential, he could still turn into a force.

Yeah I skipped the pressure on Swanson cause I knew he might snap under the pressure. But big Nate needs that fire under his ass you know.

Wasn't your actual poll question what underclassmen would have a breakout season? I recall seeing that, and wondering what in the world people were doing nominating Martin or Stonum.
If I'm wrong, c'est la vie.

But after dealing with 50 replies arguing if the Dude had crashed the plane into the god damn mountain or not, I was just happy to tally anything.

It would make our future much brighter if Will Campbell was the one to breakout.

this is exciting stuff to think about.
I think Kevin Koger is looking at a monster year, especially with a lot of talented wideouts around him.
I know people won't want to hear it, but I think we should look back at Troy Smith during his heisman year for OSU. They ran A LOT of 3/4 wide sets with Smith and Pittman/Wells as a single back. They had a DEEP pool of talented receivers - something we will definitely have. I want to see a lot of Stonum/Hemingway/Roundtree/Koger sets with Hopkins in the backfield. I think we could kill it with that kind of lineup. Who do you cover? You have a power back in the backfield along with a mobile QB. You have a reliable (save for the wtf dropsies) posession guy in 'Tree, 2 burners/big play threats in Stonum and Hemingway. Koger, then, becomes the likely candidate to burn defenses next year, especially with the likely return of the waggle. Then you have (great) depth at wideout with Odoms, Jackson, etc.
If handled well, our offense could (continue) to hum in different ways. I'll be very interested to see how Hecklinski coaches up the receiving corps. Could be fun to watch.
Back to breakout POY: look for Koger. He's got great physical tools for the position. Stonum is a good pick, though.

Am not sure why nobody mentions an incoming true freshman that Mattison hand-selected, like Antonio Poole. I mean, I would figure one of these guys will surprise.

So Darryl Stonum is the guy. Maybe we should call Stonum the Butterfly, as he spreads his wings and comes out of his cocoon!!!!!

Stonum's a good pick for really stepping up this year, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he had another pedestrian, Greg-Mathews-esque year (30-40 catches, 10-12 ypc). We'll see. He needs to demand the ball and show he can be that go-to guy.
As previously stated, it will be interesting to hear what Hecklinski has to say about the talented/deep crew of wideouts he inherits, and their development. I remember him saying he was going to refuse to look at past film of the guys to get away from pre-conceived notions.
but seriously, how many teams have the kind of quality depth at wideout that we've got at the moment? I know this staff wants to be a power running team, but they have a unique opportunity to spread the D out with those 4 good-great WR's and then smash Hopkins/Cox/Denard right up the gut. With the way Odoms, Tree, etc have learned to block downfield in RR's scheme, that's a great asset to the new staff.
