Anyone have any Mock Rock footage from tonight?
It's usually somewhat entertaining to see football players and other Michigan athletes make fools of themselves. I didn't even realize it was tonight until a few minutes ago.
I remember someone posting the video last year, and was wondering if anyone was there filming this year. Thanks.

I second this idea, I was going to go but remembered I had a formal report due tomorrow morning at 8am.

I went, and the hockey team bashed Tate realllllll hard. Almost uncomfortable haha
February 17th, 2011 at 12:08 AM ^
What exactly were some of the Tate comments made by the Hockey Team?
February 17th, 2011 at 12:48 AM ^
They were bidding on an item (Terrelle Pryor's ring!) and Bob Barker said stuff like:
-"just to warn you Tate, this is a math question..."
-"I know you don't have your academic advisors here..."
He also repeated the question really slowly. I think Tate bid "?" on the item. I don't remember for sure what was said but the poster who got some footage did get the hockey team's skit so I would recommend watching it.

Matt Rust played the part of Tate Forcier. He was wearing a hoodie and headphones a la Tate and when asked for his bid, he said he tweeted his answer and turned over his sign to show a question mark for his bid. Bob Barker then said, "Unfortunately, we do not accept tweets. Those are ineligible, so is your NCAA status."
Link to hockey team's mock rock. Warning: Some guys in bikinis.

I couldn't tell who it was, but I loved the Red Berenson impression.
February 17th, 2011 at 12:25 PM ^
with the Red impression. I agree. Very funny! Though I hope the old coach himself wasn't around to see it... :-)

I had no idea hockey players looked like that under their pads.

I didn't choose HD.

I heard that the hockey team made fun of the football team's defense? How so?
February 17th, 2011 at 7:27 AM ^
Denard won the bid for Pryor's ring. His challenge required him to kick a ball through a hoop and he deferred, saying he doesn't have a kicker and couldn't count on the defense to stop them on the second try so he'd do it himself.
February 16th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
They asked "Denard" to kick a ball through a hoop (They made it like a price is right game) and Denard says "Well, we don't really kick that well and I'm pretty sure our defense wont stop me, so I'll just throw it." And he proceeds to make a horrendus throw
February 16th, 2011 at 11:20 PM ^
FYI not the real Denard, a hockey player dressed as him
February 17th, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
That was Scooter Vaughan.

Dude Schefter was kinda harsh on some of his comments...
February 16th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Agreed. I liked Hoke as a judge though, he seems like a great guy
February 16th, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
What were these "harsh comments" that people are talking about that came from Schefter?
February 17th, 2011 at 12:42 AM ^
One that I can remember was about women's golf. They did a skit based on Tiger Woods with a bunch of girls, Elin, a car, and other stuff and I thought it was actually pretty funny. He said something like, "oh that was just like my golf game, all over the place." I guess that doesn't sound super rude but I personally don't think that their performance warranted that reaction.
February 16th, 2011 at 11:25 PM ^
Any idea who won?

Marching band

Dynasty!
February 17th, 2011 at 8:19 AM ^
well I hope they can out choreograph sports teams... that is what they do
right?
February 17th, 2011 at 12:20 PM ^
I'm pretty sure the only similarity is being able to synchronize body movements with the music... the rest comes from combining other talents and a drive for perfection.
February 17th, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
"(v) choreograph (compose a sequence of dance steps, often to music)"

just saying...

Marching is not the same thing as dancing. Marching is all about being able to keep everything the same while moving place to place. It's supposed to be like your on a moving sidewalk on an airport. Height shouldn't change, body angle shouldn't change, it should be a complete glide and if someone's being drawn to your marching, your probably doing it wrong. Marching only changes in step size and speed. Everything else should stay the same.
Dancing, on the polar opposite scale of motion, involves TONS of contrast, level changes, differences, hesitations, jerky to smooth back to jerky, different styles, whatever your eyes should be drawn every which way and then some. And then the second time you watch it, your eyes should go somewhere else and see something else. It changes, everything changes all the time and that's what makes it worth watching.
The only dancing in that video is by the flags and the finger snaps at the beginning by the trumpets. Moving while music is going on isn't always dancing. If I hear anything that has a beat, I still tend to fall in step with it, whether it's a song or just somebody walking clunky and I wouldn't say I'm dancing there
Band does have quite a few advantages.
1. They're not in season, so they have quite a bit more time than some other sports to figure out what they're doing and then practice it.
2. Size. Gives them a bigger talent pool to choose from. More likely to have a few dancers/former dancers that do know what they're doing and can choreograh/teach everyone else. Allows for more creativity for theme, song choice, whatever.
3. Rhythym. Generally speaking, they have it. Counting to four shouldn't be difficult for most people, but...
4. The flags. Who actually do a lot of choreography during the season. Though I was never one of them and someone that was might have different insight on how well what they do on the field translates to the stage.
5. Guys and girls which can allow for some extra dynamics/interplay without cross dressing.
But what they do on the field is nothing like choreographed dancing, with the exception of that one show every year where they all put down their horns and dance. I was a complete band geek in high school and most of us couldn't dance at all. Marching doesn't involve being "stiff" per se, but a lot of bandos that try to dance look really, really stiff, compared to people that know, at least a little, about what they're doing.
Also, a few things the band doesn't have include: 6 packs.and the athleticism to do a lot of the really cool things some of the other acts can.
You're right, the band should have a pretty good showing every year. But it's more because they start practicing for this right after Christmas Break and put in several hours a week up until the event to make everything perfect (as opposed to a lot of sports that throw something together the week or two leading up to it) and less because they can walk around a field while playing an instrument.
And most important, what does it matter who wins and who doesn't and why they win and whether they should or not? It's about the freaking children!

2nd place went to football.
February 16th, 2011 at 11:34 PM ^
Band was outstanding as usual.
The football team was surprisingly very very good. I was very impressed with the level of talent the team has outside of football. Taylor Lewan is a pretty funny guy.
Hockey team stuff...crossed the line a bit for me although i couldn't help but laugh at the tate stuff.
Hoke was awesome, he's the man. Schefter was kind of a dick but im sure a lot of it was just joking. He's a good guy otherwise he wouldn't have been there to support the cause.
