TomVH: A Few Quick Recruiting Updates

Submitted by TomVH on

The Michigan coaches are back to work, and they're moving pretty fast. Here's a few new updates from tonight:

QB Cyler Miles (6'4", 215 lbs) Denver, Colorado: Miles is from the same high school as 2011 LB Leilon Willingham, and has been in contact with the Michigan coaches recently.

Coach Funk talked to me about the facilities and their interest in me. They haven't offered yet, but they said they want me to be their number one quarterback for this class. I might try to make it up there this summer, I'll have to talk to my parents about it, though. Leilon told me how great the facilities were when he went there, and how they were talking about me.

Miles has offers from ASU, Colorado, Notre Dame, and Vanderbilt. He's also hearing from LSU, Washington, Arizona, and FSU. Miles said academics, football tradition, good coaching, and the offense will factor into his decision. Here's an interview he did this past year.

OL Andrus Peat (6'6", 270 lbs) Tempe, Arizona: Peat was offered by Michigan tonight, and told me he is interested in hearing more from the coaching staff. His brother, Todd, just signed with Nebraska this past year, and will be pretty difficult to get. Andrus has offers from almost everywhere already, and says he has no leaders. Michigan would have to do quite a bit to land him at this point, I'll have more from him later.

OL Seaver Myers (6'6", 290 lbs) Friendswood, Texas: Seaver is a big offensive lineman that has also been in contact with the Michigan coaches, but no offer yet. He told me that he's very interested in Michigan, and wants to hear and see more from them.

I've been building the relationship with Coach Funk, and we've been getting to know each other lately. I sent him my highlight tape so we'll see. The tradition at Michigan is unbelievable and the program is legendary. Michigan was always my second favorite team behind Texas growing up, I couldn't tell you why though.

Distance might play into things for Myers, and was open about that. He did say that if the Michigan campus blows him away and he feels comfortable then he would probably be ok with it. If Texas offers they will be the team to beat, he is also very interested in TCU, and Texas A&M outside of Texas and Michigan. You can watch his highlight video here.

WR Bryce Treggs (5'10", 157 lbs) Bellflower, California: Keep an eye on Treggs, he told me he has been in contact with the Michigan coaches. He likes the spread offense, and has been hoping to hear from Michigan.

2 is excessive? Right now our depth chart at QB goes:  Denard, DG, and Bellomy (In terms of meaningful QBs, no offense to Kennedy). I don't see real harm in taking 2 then going for 1 a class from 2013 onward. Besides, a lot QBs that don't win the starting job can be converted to other positions readily because of pure athleticism.

Additions to next recruiting class. Hoke and company have their work cut out for them though. The Michigan brand name and this up coming season will hopefully be enough to pull a few of these guys through.

He is listed a dual threat on rivals and his offer list thus far is not as impressive as Pike or Kiel, but he seems like a guy who will get more attention down the line.

There was a quote in a rivals article that was interesting:

"I would say I want at least some versions of a pro-style," Miles said. "But it's not a huge deal to me right now."

Cyler Miles Seaver Myers... Try saying that fast ten times.

These names are outstanding in 2012!

Win Homer, Zeke Pike, Gunner Kiel, Austin Appleby, Cole Gautsche, Noah Spence, Deaysean Rippy, Ondre Pipkins, Leviticus Payne,  Maty Mauk, Pharoah Brown... Fantastic!

Interesting ... I believe Peyton Manning is 6'5".  "Gunner" is listed at 6'4", but he looks at least three inches shorter than Peyton there (even when adjusting for Peyton being forward in the photo).

Typical recruit height inflation, maybe ... still, the guy is not small.

This staff is really hard at work.  Hoke was serious when he said about recruiting nationally as well as in the midwest.  I like the news about the staff working on OL recruits.

it was instate prospects

This week seems to be about TX/ CO/ AZ

I like what I see

I think you can really see that Hoke wanted this job. His passion is reflecting on his recruiting (and hopefully his coaching)

I covered his school and league for a local sports website (shameless plug) this past fall and he might have been the best player in MD as a junior.  True burner, with unreal moves, great hands and a will to win.  I say "will to win" because I saw him near tears after losing to DeMatha High School during the regular season (Good Counsel would go on to destroy them in the Washington DC Catholic League Championship).  I have heard rumors about his grades and general, uh, study habits but I do think he'll be eligible to go to any school in the country.  I think it will be a dogfight to get him though, as many of the top schools were watching him last year (many of his teammates like Countess were D1 material).  The WCAC and Baltimore leagues in general have had some great players come through.  I would love to see Blue down here (like this past year) competing to attract the top guys.

One quick thing I will also say is that I saw DeMatha's DT, Cooper, play three times this past fall and he never really "wowed" me.  DeMatha's whole team was loaded with three, four and five star talent so it would be easy to get lost in the shuffle but I can at least say there were several "wow" plays his teammate, Darien Harris (Michigan State) made during the year.  Not saying it wouldn't have been nice to land Cooper, but I think there are worse misses in this upcoming class.

... while I'm excited to see how this turns out, I don't believe what this coaching staff has done thus far for the 2012 class can be constituted as impressive.  Aren't all the coaching staffs of all major schools on the road, sending out offers, getting to know recruits?  While it's exciting to see the new names, I don't think they have done anything that merits praise yet.

Tom, any chance you have a sense of how "good" they've been thus far with this class?

It's too early for some of these kids. Once junior days get scheduled and unofficial visits happen we'll be able to see how everything pans out. I think they've done a good job with targeting positions that are needed and top talent when they've basically only had 5 weeks to do it. There's some overlap from SDSU, but this is a different level, so you can be pleased with that aspect that they're going after a lot of good talent.

4godking....I couldn't agree more.  It amazes how everyone's touting the new's staff's recruiting prowness, when in my opinion the finish to 2011's class was less than stellar...time constraints or not.  Right not the shelves are lined with all the new bright and shiny toys, but until someone puts a bow around one and sticks it under the X-mas tree it's hard for me to say our staff's working any harder then other major programs.

i dont believe myers is on the texas radar at the moment. i wouldnt be too worried about texas getting in on his recruitment unless some of our other targets fall through. so you should have a very good shot at landing him

schools like Texas/ Ohio State/ Florida typically have 5 recruits committed even before the start of senior seasons. This gives them a huge advantage in terms of recruiting.

When will Michigan reach that state?
