It's apparently official Demar Dorsey will play for GRCC. Glad he seems to be hanging in there.

How did the administration make him out to be an idiotic thug? They didn't accept his high school transcript. Apparently, neither did Louisville.
Perhaps he'd like to go to Michigan because he had his heart set on it and he's Denard's cousin. Being around the fucking FREE PRESS is probably not going to be a make-or-break factor for any kid, especially now that the Freep is no longer taking aim at the program.

The school's administration has a fucking university to run, which is bigger than the football team, let alone one talented recruit. Blame the media all you like - they deserve it - but UM made the correct decision in denying Dorsey's admission.

It would seem the fact that he's enrolling in a CC in Michigan with transferrable credits (or so I've read) to Ann Arbor indicates a continued interest in playing for U-M? Although, I seem to remember Michigan's foray into the JC world to be quite limited and quite unremarkable. Anyone correct that statement if it's inaccurate.

That is very accurate but I think he would be someone who would be a possible exception mainly because he signed a LOI here last year and he also has more talent than your average JUCO player it was only his some bad decisions that kept him out of here.

I would love to see him turn his life around and prove everyone wrong. I felt he was unjustly portrayed in the media people need to remember that these are just kids sometimes. Hope him the best and would be more than happy to see him in a michigan jersey someday with his life turned around if thats what he wants. Good luck Demar!

But jeez. He was "unjustly portrayed" by the media? The kid had two or three burglary arrests, including one with a weapon. And there was something very fishy about his sudden improvement in grades. The kid, as of last year, had no business getting into Michigan.
If he gets his act together, maybe that can change. But don't go making excuses for the kid.This isn't Columbus.

Maybe you need it spelled out. Maybe one day, after he's proven himself in school, and after he has stayed out of trouble for more than two years, he'll get a chance to play at Michigan.

You realize a lot can happen in two years, especially from the ages of 16-18, right? He went from not being able to drive to being able to see boobies legally, being able to buy cigarettes, and voting in elections. Two years might not meet your minimum requirements for a Michigan student but, considering he grew up in a shitty neighborhood and cited a reason to come to Michigan was to get out of said shitty neighborhood, I would say he has already come a long fucking way.

This was on his facebook (profile picture IIRC?) for a long time. Attack me if you want, but to admissions this photo likely appeared very questionable. Everything he is glorifying in this photo is a very unfortunate consequence of where he grew up and how he was raised; however, coming to Ann Arbor doesn't cure all ills like some posters prefer to believe.
I hope he gets his act together because I don't think this kind of lifestyle was his choice. He obviously came from a poisonous environment and was taught warped morals. Hopefully, Demar can mature and thrive outside of his toxic environment, but only he can save himself. I'll be pulling for him.

Am I missing something? The only thing he is glorifying in this picture is money and a horrible taste in shoes....and everyone in the world glorifies money so all he is guilty of is apparently saying "fuck you" to anyone who dislikes bright red shoes. If admissions saw a picture of a kid giving the bird with money in his hand and it had anything to do with him not getting into Michigan, I will be very disappointed in my alma mater.

Admissions generally doesn't have time to go scoping out online profiles of applicants. Probably lucky for some prospective students (plenty if them non-athletes), who tweet and post all kinds of material that doesn't speak well of their maturity or developing values.

<br>If Dorsey had completed his UM application, Admissions would have used usual channels to evaluate him--grades, test scores, letters of Rec & input of adults in his life, maybe an interview, etc. Not photos they found somewhere.

"Facebook scanning" has been a recent practice in most admissions departments. In cases where they are unsure of whether to grant admission, like Dorsey's, they'd use every single method to examine an applicant possible. This includes scanning an applicant's facebook, twitter, or myspace.
Of course kids from better schools, who grew up in better neighborhoods, with better grades, better test scores, and extracurricular activities galore are probably not subjected to as much scrutiny, but what do you expect?

The article that you linked said that NACAC found 1 in 4 schools do this. How is that "most?"

I'll ask my colleagues in OUA but I'll be surprised if they consider photographs found on the internet a more reliable indicator than the other means they use to judge the acceptability of its 38,000 applications--or even just the athletes.

his hometown environment, that's wonderful for him. If he is able to get the grades and credits that enable him to transfer to UM, that would be a great accomplishment, but since we've taken such a microscopically small number of transfers over the last few decades, I wouldn't hold my breath. While I agree that photos taken during adolescence do not mean that maturation is impossible, it would be interesting to find out what Brady Hoke's view of a kid's past and background is. His general statements about what kind of kids he wants could lead you to conclude that he wouldn't be interested in DD, but in other interviews BH has directly referred to his own wild days in college, and the fact that he had to mature himself.

Well, there was his homily during the introductory press conference about how he was a criminal justice major and only got started in coaching because it was a way to help kids.
If Demar can do the academic work at GRCC, I think there's a good chance Officer Hoke would be willing to offer him a scholarship.

Just for the record, as Mr. Cook reported here months ago, Demar Dorsey had contact with the Broward County criminal justice system over two felonies; in one case, the charges were dropped, and in the other case he was acquitted.
Regardless, I still think that offering a scholarship to Dorsey was ill-advised for a coach in RR's shoes at the time. Given Dorsey's background, even if he was never convicted of any felony, it was absolutely inevitable that there was going to be a media shitstorm over the scholarship offer, and that was the last thing that RR needed after two of the most disappointing seasons in the last 4 decades of Michigan football. The fact that there wasn't a good enough job in assessing DD's academic qualifications prior to the offer just made things worse. It would have been far more prudent for the staff to either offer a 3-star without the baggage, or bank the scholarship.
