2012 Rivals 250 to Watch is out

Today, Rivals release their 250 to Watch list for 2012, which includes six players from Michigan.  Four of them should be household names to Wolverine fans already:

  • Danny O'Brien
  • Royce Jenkins-Stone
  • James Ross
  • Terry Richardson

The other two I am not familiar with (Efe Scott-Emuakpor and Kelby Latta).

Anyway, since Rivals usually has at least 250 4* members (well, the top 30 or so of their rankings are 5*), this is a decent barometer of an initial top 250 of Rivals rankings.

I was going to make the post prettier with some more links and lists of guys we are/probably will be after, but I really had to take a deuce, so I got up what I did and then made way for the restroom.

P.S.  Excellent list above.

P.P.S.  Sorry for the TMI.

I scout for a team in Latta's conference and his school, Harper Creek, is our main rival. I'll be able to give a first hand take him as the season progresses. Talk around here has him as a Badger lean, due to the style of offense ran at Michigan by RR.  Maybe something changes if Hoke gets his chance. I can say that they conference isn't exactly the strongest in West Michigan, but there should be a couple good tests for him.

4 kids from Our Lady of Good Counsel in Maryland.  that school always pumps out great talent.  i'd love to see us really make significant inroad there.

Barry Sanders Jr.

I hear that he's not leaving Big 12 country anytime.  His dad still lives in West Bloomfield so if he wants to be closer to his dad, Michigan is a possibility but an extremely long shot nonethless.

Great so we're in on 6 guys in Rivals' first top 250 ranking.  6.  Doesn't that seem pretty low?  I know the whole "win and they will follow" addage, but wasn't 6 around what we had this year?

All the people shouting "Michigan and Ohio talent is as high as it's ever been" and "We're going to have a great recruiting class this year because of the talent level in the Midwest" are smoking some serious crack.

Is this serious? Michigan has a chance at seven or eight high four star guys, all from Michigan and Ohio, not to mention recruits from other parts of the country that they'll be in on as we get deeper into the class. Guys like Allen Gant and Ifeadi Odenigbo are big time talents who OSU may not even offer and who aren't even on this list. Wormley will be a top five fuy in the state of Ohio. When was the last time Michigan had chance at a guy like that?

Not to mention it's a year before signing day and this list will change by the time the season starts.

It was serious.

I was here for the NSD liveblog, and all I heard was "Ooooohhh man 2012 here we come!!!".  Well, it looks like we have a shot with 6-8 kids that will be 4 stars or higher.  That's not exactly great.  I'd be willing to bet large sums of money there are at least 15 teams that have more interest from more 4/5 stars than Michigan.

Of course the list WILL shift, and wins WILL raise interest from top flight recruits.  I am just stating that I think people on this board shot their load too quickly saying MI and OH talent will just fall into our laps.  Another reason being, we won't get all of these guys who are interested, and we've seen over the years (both Lloyd and RR) that getting 5-star instate talent is no cake walk.

Some people do get too excited over prospects and they oversimplify the process, but this class really has a chance to be one of the better ones in the country at the end of the day. It's too early to judge either way, but a top ten caliber class can be the backbone to a return to contending for a B1G title every year, and it can provide plenty of momentum for subsequent recruiting classes.

Following recruiting never gets old for me and I'm already excited about following the next class. Hopefully we can pull some nice kids out of the midwest and keep the Texas thing going along with the apparent MD talent that is there.
