Spartans anxious for Michigan game

"...and it was refreshing last week to hear his players talk about the Oct. 25 clash at Michigan Stadium." Refreshing??? That is ALL Sparty talks about, thinks about and wetdreams about.

Take your beatings and countdown clock back to E.L.; go to Rick's, burn some couches, trash your campus and spend the weekend in the clink.

ESPN.com's Andy Rittenberg has found that even as the Spartans prepare for the upcoming season, they have the Oct. 25 game against Michigan on their minds.

"I do not want to go through my whole college career without beating my rival school," senior running back Javon Ringer said to ESPN. "That would be embarrassing."

The Spartans have not beaten Michigan since 2001. Michigan State led 24-14 in the fourth quarter last season but gave up two touchdowns to lose in East Lansing.

"It's imbedded in our minds and our memories," safety Otis Wiley told ESPN. "We were close last year, been close in all of our encounters. We need to be on top this year. We have the people and we have the talent to do that.

"It's our top priority right now. We want that one, and we want it bad."

It was agonizing being in the stands during that game and waiting for them to show Tigers updates. However, it was really interesting to see the comraderie among Tigers fans from both UM and State. Once the game was clearly out of reach (which was pretty early, IIRC) everyone in the student section, regardless of team loyalty, started anxiously discussing the Tigers. One of the more bizarre and enjoyable experiences I've ever had at Michigan Stadium.

I think that Dantonio has the team moving in the right direction and that this rivalry will get much more intense in the coming years. The 2008 Spartans are probably less talented than the 2007 (Caulcrick, Thomas, Davis) but UM is in transition so it'll even out. This year's game looks like a tossup to me. Respect your opponent. The more Wolverine fans disparage this rivalry, the sweeter it will be for Spartan fans once they win.

I really don't mean to stir anything up, and I'm not trying to trash talk, but doesn't it strike you as a little bit hypocritical to say that MSU is obsessing over this game while you have "SpartanNation" making parodies every few weeks? Or even taking the time to make this thread and point out how pathetic "little brother" is? That said, I'm really looking forward to the game this year. It should be a good one; I refuse to believe that RR won't have you Wolverines ready by that point in the season. It's about time for a Michigan State victory, I think. This drought is getting ridiculous.

Sadly, this is the best chance MSU will get for their once-every-decade win. RR is so focused on OSU that he may not be able to match MSU (or PSU for that matter) in their intensity. This could very well be a repeat of Bo's first year: a loss to MSU but an "upset" over O$U's highly-paid pros. We shall see.....

So, you are operating under the theory that RR is so "focused" on one game that he will not be able to yell as loudly as JoePa or Mark Dantonio, resulting in their teams being more "fired up" and them winning the game? And you use the RCMB level "O$U lol" nickname. Fantastic.

Last year, I remember an article about Jehuu Caulcrick about how much he wanted to beat Michigan. In fact, he was more vehement than Ringer. The point is it's off-season and the Michigan press wants to increase the drama when the Top team ( Michigan ) and the 3rd team ( MSU ) from the state meet. ( the second being the team headed by LeFevour (sp? ) )

the difference here, is that we are fans. we should be obsessing over our rivals. the MSU players and coaches should most certainly NOT be obsessing over one game. that's what makes you sparty, sparty.

not to mention that, when we obsess, it's in jest and laced with overwhelming satire. when you guys do it, it is sincere and sad, brah.

Dan you have to admit that there are plenty of Michigan fans - even those on these boards, that talk tons of non-ironic, non-satirical shit. I'm all for the funny trash-talking, but the second I start believing it...whatevs. Regardless, Dr. Worm, it seems, can at least take the joke. So he's fine. For now.

  • When a Michigan coach who has won a national championship goes 7-5 , 11-2, and 8-4, 18-6 in the big ten over the last three years, with one rose bowl appearance, and a capital one bowl win, and fails to beat his biggest rival, the fans call for his head and he is asked politely to step aside.
  • When a Michigan State coach goes 7-6, 3-5 in the big ten, losing to his rival, and losing in the champs sports bowl, he is hailed as the second coming.

I'm not even going to point out the most blatant flaw in your criticism, that Dantonio was in his first year and Lloyd was in his 5294857296247th. (By saying I'm not going to point it out and mentioning it, I'm really pointing it out while giving the idea that it's obvious). What did you expect when you're rebuilding a program? Dantonio took MSU to a bowl game and is bringing in four star recruits. That's a step up for a program that just last year was one of the worst in the conference. For Michigan, a school consistently in the upper echelon of college football, constant bowl embarrassments and losses to the biggest rival are unacceptable.

 I do like how Lloyd merely "failed to beat" Ohio State, whereas Dantonio flat out "lost" to Michigan. You included Dantonio's bowl loss in his record, but didn't count any bowl losses for Lloyd. See what I'm getting at here?

In basketball, the conference schedule is 18 games, and you have 10 conference opponents, so you play eight teams twice and two teams once.  (There are no protected rivalries like in football.)  It just happened that MSU was one of the two teams.
