Do we need a QB in this class now?

Submitted by JTGoBlue on

Looking around for what QB's are still available, and gleaned this from ESPN:

Jacoby Brissett(West Palm Beach, Fla./Dwyer)

Player rank: NR | Position rank: 25 | Grade: 78 | Stars: 3
Height: 6-4 | Weight: 220 pounds |

ESPN overview:

Brissett is one of the most physically impressive quarterback prospects this class has to offer. He is tall, strong and can make all the throws you want from within the pocket. He is a good athlete, but we would not necessarily call him a dual-threat. He plays under center in the shotgun, has the size to scan the field and is an imposing figure within the pocket. Reminds us of former LSU QB JaMarcus Russell.

Recruiting update: The Badgers could be the team to beat right now if Brissett leaves the state. Miami and coach Al Golden are coming on strong, while new Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis recently made a big impression on Brissett. He potentially has two more visits, and the Gators, Huskies, Gamecocks and Hurricanes are possible candidates.

Cameron Coffman(Peculiar, Mo./Ray-Pec)

Player rank: NR | Position rank: 33 | Grade: 78 | Stars: 3
Height: 6-2 | Weight: 175 pounds |

ESPN overview:

There is an awful lot to like about the gritty signal-caller. He is a sneaky athlete who is much more of a runner than you might think. He has great feet and pocket movement with awareness of pressure and the tools to elude it. He has a live arm, not elite, but powerful enough to take some shots downfield and fit the ball into tight spots underneath because of his quick delivery.
Recruiting update: Unless someone comes in late, it's basically down to Arizona State and Alabama for Coffman. He has already visited the Sun Devils, and he made an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa over the summer. If the Crimson Tide have room, they could take him.

Stephen Weatherford(Land O'Lakes, Fla./Land O'Lakes)

Player rank: NR | Position rank: 44 | Grade: 77 | Stars: 3
Height: 6-2 | Weight: 200 pounds |

ESPN overview:

Weatherford is the type of guy who grows on you the more you watch him. He is an athletic pocket passer with good overall size and a sturdy frame. He can make plays with his legs when he has to and possesses deceptively good arm strength, as evidenced by his throwing at times with not a single foot on the ground and many back-foot tosses.
Recruiting update: The South Florida decommit recently visited Miami and is scheduled to visit Cincinnati this coming weekend or next. Western Kentucky could also get an official visit.

Has anyone heard any rumors, discussion of QB prospects? Thoughts on QB need for this class?

We offered Minnesota commit Max Shortell...he's not leaving Minny.

We supposedly offered BC commit Christian Suntrup...I'm not sure he's coming either.

We 'went after' Clemson commit Cole Stoudt (from Dublin, OH), but he's already enrolled.

We 'pursued' former Pitt commit and current Rutgers commit Gary Nova.

Bottom line: The coaches will stop at nothing to get a QB in this class. The likelyhood of the three you posted being possibilities...however...is not so good

We're currently recruiting Gary Nova? I never knew that, I'm no expert but he isn't that good. He seemed like a normal high school QB. IF we don't get a QB this year aren't there a few good prospects from the class of 2012?

the short answer to your question (without passing judgment on the prospects above) is that if they can get a non-terrible body - yes.

is weatherford the younger brother of drew?

I would love to grab Brissett and leave Al Golden hanging after taking our guys.

However, if we can't get a QB, I would like a QB coach this year.

I think we need one for depth, but I don't think we're getting a top ranked guy.  We're looking at 2 more years of Denard and up to 4 more years of Devin (assuming the medical redshirt goes through).  So if a guy came in he'd have to stay here for five years just to get one year of playing time after Devin leaves or come in planning to beat out Gardner.  I'd imagine a lot of the top prospects would go somewhere that had older QBs and less of a wait.

Personally I imagine this is the year you take a lower ranked guy whose future career path is backup or switches position.  Next year is really the year to go after a top ranked guy.  Devin would have up to three years left, Borges would have had a year to show off his skills and any recruit could redshirt and have two years of playing time.

This is the kind of recruiting class that has a Sheridan or Navarre type of recruit in it.  Never really intended to start but it is nice to have warm bodies around.  Maybe we take a ATH type and convert them to WR next year.  Get a body on the QB depth chart this year and a WR in future years.

It would be nice to get a good QB who can redshirt, then have three years of this new system under his belt to take over once Devin is gone.

No top-flight QB is available right now, nor would they be inclined to sit on the bench for 3 years. I think we're more looking for a capable body as an insurance policy. Not a long-term solution at the starting spot, imo.

but we could also go without one with both denard and DG. If DGs redshirt goes through then we willhave him for 2 years after denard. But there is also that QB that is committed to SDSU and im sure that Hoke could persuade him since he already had to go to SDSU.

They all sound pretty good.  Not a fan of the "reminds us of JaMarcus Russell" but  as long as the "purple drank" stay away, I can live with it.

After having Gardner, Boldin and Boisture last year, there isn't much in the state of Michigan.   The best QB is Alex Niznak, a CMU recruit.    He's already enrolled at CMU so he's out of the picture.   Other than that, the only other QB attracting any attention is Josh Harris from DCD-- and his offers are low DI and DII.

He goes to Chaparal (same as Craig Roh and Taylor Lewan)...but it's not going to be an easy land. He's got early offers from at least a dozen schools, including Bama (who he's already visited). Tom said he sent a text to Brewer's coach yesterday and he thinks we'll 'have a shot'...we'll see

After watching the highlights, I kept seeing how much time Brewer had to throw the ball. I then realized Andre Y was protecting his blindside and how I really wanted him to play for Michigan. Oh well, we will find another LT to follow in Long and Lewan's footsteps.

Brewer is a great looking prospect who has some mobility to go along with a good arm and excellent instincts. I'd be extremely happy for us to land him.  We need Roh and Lewan to recruit on their summer vacations back home. They can tell DJ Foster, a Saguaro athlete,  to come to Ann Arbor too.
