no way...
January 17th, 2011 at 11:41 PM ^
No thanks. He had beastly players when he was here. I could've "coached" that group and help win 9-10 games...just sayin'.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:45 PM ^
still, for the life of me, cannot figure out how M didn't beat OSU in 2006 with that D...
January 17th, 2011 at 11:50 PM ^
He was too much. I hate facing running QBs. Such a pesk. If that was a QB like Krenzel, Michigan destroys them but Smith was unbelievable that year.
English had Woodley, Hall, Branch, Harris, Crable, Taylor, etc. Like I said, I could have won with that group.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:00 AM ^
Smith made no big plays with his legs? Just the opposite in fact, he got sacked repeatedly. We lost that game because OSU went 4 wide and negated our front 7.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:09 AM ^
That, and a certain helmet-to-helmet penalty.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:18 AM ^
I HATE when people blame the helmet-to-helmet and use it to paint that game as closer than it really was.
We won the turnover battle 3-0 that day. 3-0. Have you seen the stats on how hard it is to lose a game with a 2-TO advantage let alone 3? The fact that they still won is a testament to how badly we were outplayed AND outschemed.
January 18th, 2011 at 1:28 AM ^
Yep. I will never forget that game. We had linebackers covering slot receivers all day. We were badly outschemed.
January 18th, 2011 at 2:33 AM ^
The 4-receiver sets neutralized our front seven and forced Johnny Sears to match up against Hartline and Robiske. Brilliant tactical game planning by Tressel and the difference when our two programs were otherwise evenly matched. Like the Clarett wheel route in 2002, Tressel always seemed to have a couple tricks up his sleeve that Lloyd could never match.
January 18th, 2011 at 2:42 AM ^
guh.... johnny sears.... guh....
January 18th, 2011 at 9:39 AM ^
That's my recollection too. The score was close, but we were playing catchup all night.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:34 AM ^
You mean a phantom helmet to helmet penalty
January 18th, 2011 at 1:11 AM ^
Let's go to the tape:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOmGMGUDPbk
What part of "helmet to helmet" isn't there? As much as it pains me to say it, that's a good call, and a must-call every single time. Crable made a dumb mistake.
January 18th, 2011 at 1:20 AM ^
It was phantom because I'm a Michigan fan and thus believe every call against us is bullshit and the other team is holding our defensive line every time.
Honestly was that helmet to helmet, I think it was a late hit more than anything but still that was a bull shit call and I'm sticking to it.
Right or Wrong, Innocent or Guilty I'm behind Michigan 100% of the time.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:27 AM ^
I find it funny that you got neg'd for that comment - regardless of the facts shown on the video. Our perception of truth is greater than the truth shown on the video.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM ^
The way I saw it was that Crable lead with his shoulder (if you slow it down, you see him tuck his head and lead his shoulder out) to make the hit. Smith was moving laterally and moved further than what Crable was expecting. Smith was one of the most elusive quarterbacks in the league and had beat us on multiple broken plays along the sideline, so I don't blame Crable for making the sure hit. It was incidental and yes could be called, but also could have been a no call. I will never blame Crable for the hit.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:35 AM ^
IIRC, the flag was thrown for a late hit not helmet to helmet, which was a questionable call too. I dont believe the NCAA or NFL were penalizing helmet to helmet hits like they our today.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:16 PM ^
You recalled incorrectly. It was a flag for helmet to helmet, not a late hit.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:03 PM ^
Doesn't matter if he led with his shoulder. That's a pretty vicious head-to-head hit, that came after Smith threw the ball, with Smith straddling the sideline. That's a no-brainer 15-yarder every single time, no matter if you're wearing your Michigan blinders or not. It was a dumb hit, an unnecessarily vicious hit, and a late hit. Dumb, undisciplined, and ill-timed, as these penalties usually are.
January 19th, 2011 at 10:35 AM ^
Smith had just released the ball. I see these types of hits all the time when the QB is in the pocket and is hit right after releasing the ball. This happens so often that they actually mention this statistic, in addition to the actual tackles, many times during the game. He did not hit him late, which would have been undisciplined and dumb, his helmet hit Troy Smith's helmet, and this was done because of the lateral movement of the play.
Repeat, the call was not a undisciplined late hit, it was a helmet to helmet call. Since Crable lead with his shoulder, it wasn't a viscous intentional hit. The call was made, and it was a ill-timed penalty, but to call anyone who disagrees with you as just having Michigan blinders on, is an obvious attempt to use ad hominem attacks when your argument isn't as strong as you think it is.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:07 AM ^
Which is why I don't want English. It took way too long to adjust to that. We played nickel for most of the first half when they were spread out. Our linebackers just couldn't keep up. We actually played somewhat better in the second half, but too little too late.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:31 AM ^
My take while watching the game 4 years ago was that we were playing scared on defense. English was an aggressive play caller that whole year, and in the tOSU game he wanted to sit back in zones and let everything develop in front of them and not attack. Their fear of getting burned kept them from doing what they did all year.
BTW, isn't English still the HC at EMU? How much damage would that do to our in state recruiting with the high schools knowing that we had a man on staff that resigned 2 weeks before NSD to take a lesser position at another in state school?
January 18th, 2011 at 9:44 AM ^
no one will fault him for leaving EMU, even if it is as DC at Michigan. It's still a step-up IMHE.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:33 AM ^
Brady Hoke has continually said it is about the kids. How would English leaving the ECU program in that manner be about kids? I cannot believe that Hoke would even entertain the idea, and if he does we will know it is all coachspeak and fluff.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:14 PM ^
Who cares about their kids. We can't touch every kid in the world.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:11 PM ^
...let's be honest. English is probably getting fired after next season anyways (as one of the very few EMU Alums who are fans on this board: My program kills coaching careers, it just happens...).
January 18th, 2011 at 8:32 AM ^
I get the same thing from my friends every time I say this but the field was horrible that game and though we both played on the same field and all of that, I believe we got the worst of that deal trying to get traction to get after Troy and those receivers of his...
January 18th, 2011 at 9:16 AM ^
Smith was sacked once that day.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:32 AM ^
Derrick Harvey and the Florida Gators defense of that season have a different take on the invincibility of Troy Smith.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:15 AM ^
Also do you remember how awful that field was in the game. i just remember woodly trying to use his speed to get off the ball and his feet just slipping and him not moving.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:33 AM ^
Yes, osu created themseves a real home fied advantage that day.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:31 AM ^
because we only played press coverage in the second half ):
January 18th, 2011 at 1:28 AM ^
OSU spread the ball out and went total anti-Tressellball. We did not adjust soon enough and that goes on both the DC and the HC.
Coaching makes a big difference with two evenly matched teams.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:37 AM ^
I give Lloyd and staff a pass for that game. It must have been real hard to coach when Bo had passed the day before, much less adapt to osu's uptempo game plan.
It was the Rose Bowl where they looked befuddled that bugged me.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:12 AM ^
I agree.. I can let the 3 point loss, on the road, to the #1 team in the land go, especially the day after Bo died. It was a great game (although the play that sticks in my head is Henne missing Manningham on a double move in the first half). But the loss to USC in the Rose Bowl was embarrassing. It looked as if we had never watched a minute of USC game film, and didn't adapt our game plan. It reminded me of Tressel vs. SEC.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:55 PM ^
what came first.. the chicken, or the egg? would those players be who they were without Mr. Ron English? The world may never know...
January 18th, 2011 at 12:13 AM ^
And why do you think we had all of those beastly players? Because Ron English is a hell of a recruiter and while his scheme had its flaws the issues were fixable and I believe he would do a solid job back as DC
January 18th, 2011 at 7:43 AM ^
That year was English's first year on staff. Said beastly players were upperclassmen. Thus Ron English did not recruit them. Instead Ron English left us with the big dearth of defensive upperclassmen we have now.
January 18th, 2011 at 11:53 AM ^
It was his first year as DC but had been on the staff since 2003 - his California connections got us leon hall, donovan warren, and of course Johnny Sears
January 18th, 2011 at 8:52 AM ^
I don't support this line of reasoning much. Does this mean that all coaches with good players probably aren't good coaches?
January 18th, 2011 at 12:01 PM ^
Yes, but only when those good players underperform. If you're Larry Coker and they perform worse than you know they should (and the team gets less talented every year), yes, you are a bad coach.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:41 PM ^
FWIW his profile picture is of him in Michigan gear. If I'm looking at the same Ron English Facebook page as you.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
And his contact information is: www.mgoblue.com

Just noticed that the profile picture has comments from 2009. So the profile picture is probably irrelevant now.
