Ron English as DC again?

Submitted by yoopergoblue on

Just saw on Twitter that Ron English just put something up on Facebook about how he just receieved a call from Coach Hoke and that big news is coming out soon.  English as the DC again?

He was too much. I hate facing running QBs. Such a pesk. If that was a QB like Krenzel, Michigan destroys them but Smith was unbelievable that year.

English had Woodley, Hall, Branch, Harris, Crable, Taylor, etc. Like I said, I could have won with that group.

I HATE when people blame the helmet-to-helmet and use it to paint that game as closer than it really was.

We won the turnover battle 3-0 that day. 3-0. Have you seen the stats on how hard it is to lose a game with a 2-TO advantage let alone 3? The fact that they still won is a testament to how badly we were outplayed AND outschemed.

The 4-receiver sets neutralized our front seven and forced Johnny Sears to match up against Hartline and Robiske.  Brilliant tactical game planning by Tressel and the difference when our two programs were otherwise evenly matched.  Like the Clarett wheel route in 2002, Tressel always seemed to have a couple tricks up his sleeve that Lloyd could never match.

It was phantom because I'm a Michigan fan and thus believe every call against us is bullshit and the other team is holding our defensive line every time.

Honestly was that helmet to helmet, I think it was a late hit more than anything but still that was a bull shit call and I'm sticking to it.

Right or Wrong, Innocent or Guilty I'm behind Michigan 100% of the time.

The way I saw it was that Crable lead with his shoulder (if you slow it down, you see him tuck his head and lead his shoulder out) to make the hit.  Smith was moving laterally and moved further than what Crable was expecting.  Smith was one of the most elusive quarterbacks in the league and had beat us on multiple broken plays along the sideline, so I don't blame Crable for making the sure hit.  It was incidental and yes could be called, but also could have been a no call. I will never blame Crable for the hit.

Doesn't matter if he led with his shoulder.  That's a pretty vicious head-to-head hit, that came after Smith threw the ball, with Smith straddling the sideline.  That's a no-brainer 15-yarder every single time, no matter if you're wearing your Michigan blinders or not.  It was a dumb hit, an unnecessarily vicious hit, and a late hit.  Dumb, undisciplined, and ill-timed, as these penalties usually are.

Smith had just released the ball.  I see these types of hits all the time when the QB is in the pocket and is hit right after releasing the ball.  This happens so often that they actually mention this statistic, in addition to the actual tackles, many times during the game. He did not hit him late, which would have been undisciplined and dumb, his helmet hit Troy Smith's helmet, and this was done because of the lateral movement of the play.

Repeat, the call was not a undisciplined late hit, it was a helmet to helmet call. Since Crable lead with his shoulder, it wasn't a viscous intentional hit.  The call was made, and it was a ill-timed penalty, but to call anyone who disagrees with you as just having Michigan blinders on, is an obvious attempt to use ad hominem attacks when your argument isn't as strong as you think it is.

My take while watching the game 4 years ago was that we were playing scared on defense. English was an aggressive play caller that whole year, and in the tOSU game he wanted to sit back in zones and let everything develop in front of them and not attack. Their fear of getting burned kept them from doing what they did all year.

BTW, isn't English still the HC at EMU? How much damage would that do to our in state recruiting with the high schools knowing that we had a man on staff that resigned 2 weeks before NSD to take a lesser position at another in state school?

I agree.. I can let the 3 point loss, on the road, to the #1 team in the land go, especially the day after Bo died. It was a great game (although the play that sticks in my head is Henne missing Manningham on a double move in the first half). But the loss to USC in the Rose Bowl was embarrassing. It looked as if we had never watched a minute of USC game film, and didn't adapt our game plan. It reminded me of Tressel vs. SEC.

And why do you think we had all of those beastly players? Because Ron English is a hell of a recruiter and while his scheme had its flaws the issues were fixable and I believe he would do a solid job back as DC
