No DC Hire Yet: Big Name Coming?
While the OC position has been known since coach Hoke was fired, the DC position remains unfilled. If were getting a member of the Michigan Mafia such as Austin, Heater or Bedford, one would guess that we could have gotten them relatively quickly (especially given the fact that Austin is currently unemployed and Heater was before going to Temple).
Could the lack of a hire mean that we're going after a big name like Randy Shannon? Or does DB feel that he needs to go through a six-day chasing period even though he knows who is going to get hired?

Crews are actively working to restore your Michigan football program. No estimate for restoration of service is available at this time.
I doubt Hoke had a lot of time to spend on hiring a coordinator Wednesday or Thursday due to heavy media and PR schedules. This weekend is a good time to finish putting a staff together. I expect announcements early next week so the focus can return to player recruiting.

Don't see why they might not consider this guy. He is currently the linebackers coach at Penn St. Was head coach at Maryland from 97-2000. Grad assistant at Michigan and Bowling Green. Coached at Ball St in 82. Was defensive assistant from 83-91 at Colorado under Bill McCartney (won a NC in 1990). 92-96 DC at Northwestern.
The problem may be that he's waiting for JoePa to call it quits and may be in line for a promotion at PSU.

I, for one, LOVE the idea of a big name DC hire. Being a realist, I see no way it's freaking happening.
Let's not forget that we have Brady Hoke as our head coach. If we brought it a Randy Shannon or some other similar big name guy who has been a head coach at this level, doesn't that overshadow our head coach? Sure, Hoke's still the name at the top of the org chart, but if his assistants have a higher Q rating then he's going to get lost in the shuffle with no opportunity to stand out on his own until games are played.
I would be very shocked if DB made a glamour hire for the DC. At this point, I'd be very satisfied for them just to bring in a staff that's all on the same page no matter of their level of fame.

Why do so many people keep referring to Randy Shannon as a "candidate" when there's absolutely no reason to believe there's any interest on either side? I'd be surprised if the guy's even willing to be a coordinator. Even if he is, I'm sure he'd consider the job a short-term gig between HC jobs. Plus, would Hoke really hire a DC with a higher profile than he has? No.

100% agree with you mackbru, no way randy shannon is going back to a DC job after getting a taste of being the HC. if anything he'll go to be an assistant on an NFL team, or HC at a smaller school.

Randy Shannon has become the Jon Gruden of defensive coordinators. The longer a defensive coordinator search goes on, the likelihood that Shannon's name will be mentioned (despite the fact that there is zero evidence he wants to be a coordinator again) approaches one.
