No DC Hire Yet: Big Name Coming?

Submitted by detrocks on

While the OC position has been known since coach Hoke was fired, the DC position remains unfilled.  If were getting a member of the Michigan Mafia such as Austin, Heater or Bedford, one would guess that we could have gotten them relatively quickly (especially given the fact that Austin is currently unemployed and Heater was before going to Temple).

Could the lack of a hire mean that we're going after a big name like Randy Shannon?  Or does DB feel that he needs to go through a six-day chasing period even though he knows who is going to get hired?

Brandon talked a lot about spending money, but the bottom line is that, so far, they have put together a typical Michigan staff of coaches who will work for less money for that "Michigan pedigree."   I am expecting a low profile name, and probably one from the IMCT.  I wouldn't be surprised if they were waiting for Trgovac, even though a lot of people to think his expertise is limited to the DL.

Recruiting is the next task on Hoke's schedule, and if they were going to hire someone who doesn't have more games left to coach, I think they would have done it by now.

Hell yeah!  Great day, right?!  I'm really not sure what the best part was: (1) beating the Ravens by holding them under 150 yards of total offense or (2) beating the Ravens because they completely imploded.  Who are you pulling for tomorrow?

Oh, it was all sweet. The second half was as much fun as I've had watching football.

My favorite was getting a big play, the winning play, out of the passing game with Antonio Brown. A 6th round draft pick. From Central. Remember when the rest of the world fretted about how in the world we'd do without Holmes. Just fine, thank you very much.

Some teams win April. And then go on and win in January.

As for who we draw next week, I dont care. The Jets would be cool for the fans to pack the house again. But, the Stillers need, must, beat the Pats. And the franchise has never backed down from getting it done on the road before, so who cares about locale.

I'm just stoked they won today. I dont think Uncle Ray Ray is happy tonight.  I'd stay away from him if I were Little Joey. Or Bolden. Or the former lolbengal whateverhisnameis

would not be happy.

He wasn't a good coach in Philadelphia, was horrible in the red-zone, the blitzes were very predictable, and called some horrible plays that included Jamar Chaney covering Percy Harvin (that play ended the Eagles-Vikings game, which guaranteed the Bears the #2 seed) and Brandon Graham covering Vernon Davis. I love Brandon Graham and all, but he's not gonna be able to cover a freak of nature TE as a 4-3 LE.

Oh, and he's not a Michigan man /s

I would poop my pants if randy shannon got hired. oh and "heyman14" I would probably chill out on this thread for a bit and then maybe change your name and people might not neg you anymore

but he needs to get one soon. I know he shouldn't rush it and make a mistake but some highly rated recruits are "on the line" and won't come here until we get a DC.

... Randy shannon to come coach for us. The reason i don't see it happening is because he is waiting for the NFL season to end, so he can take a position when teams start building new staffs.

whats the realistic chance he comes back to UM as DC? He's clearly not doing well as head coach but his 06 (ranked 10 in total d) and 07 (ranked 24) seasons as DC were pretty good.

... the names of the players he had on the D when he took over in '06? David harris, leon hall, alan branch, lamar woodley, jammar adams, shawn crable. It wasnt that he was good, the players he got to work with had outstanding talent.

It's time  for Mike Trgovac to come home. He was a DC for the Panthers for 5 years. I think they went to the super bowl during that time. He also coached some college with Dr. Lou.

Okay, this is kind of a wildcard, but what about bringing back Moeller? His misconduct is in the past, he's been here before (like Hoke), and he could probably do a good job. My only concern is that he's 69. Just a thought though.

I know and like Jim Hermann. He loved being at Michigan. I wonder if he'd ever want to come back after being pushed out the door here however. So the point's probably moot.

Surprised Corwin Brown's name hasn't come up in the discussion.  He was a DB coach for the patriots last I knew.  He's a good coach, liked him a lot while he was at ND

I'd donate my entire salary to bring Dick LeBeau in and guru the shit up out of our Defense

Anyone else in?

I have no doubt he can handle both Michigan and Steeler duties if we make it worth his while. He's the best out there.

As much as I hope, I feel I'm just going to be underwhelmed by someone who will be hired for being related to Michigan in some way.

Since any truly big name would be a bigger name than our head coach I wouldn't expect anyone other than a Carr guy or should we be so lucky an obscure up and coming genius.

Michigan is not going to be able to get a big name DC because a big name DC would want to be the head coach himself and would not work for a head coach who has yet to distinguish himself.

This thread has gone from having the Doors/Pro wrestlers/Actual Pro coaches, with some Grateful Dead sprinkled in on who’s going to be the next DC. Great work gents.

I'd like to see Mattison get the gig. Imagine his pitch to recruits: "Yeah, I've coached a few pretty good players. You might have heard of some of 'em, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed... you know, you kind of remind me of a young Ray."

I think that being able to tell a kid that you know what it takes to get him coached up for a career in the NFL is absolutely critical to getting the top guys.

There is absolutely no reason why someone on a NFL playoff team couldn't  announce he is taking the Michigan DC job immediately after the playoffs.  That wouldn't affect the team one bit.

If you recall, Charlie Weis was hired as the ND head coach while the Patriots were making their Super Bowl run. I vividly remember all of the Pats players congratulating Weis after their SB victory and wishing him well.

Hoke hasn't found his DC yet. NOT a good sign.
