Ross Commit Watch Day 2

Submitted by Zone Left on
The suspense builds. I'm near SDSU and willing to egg Hoke's car or let him punch me in the face for a call from an unknown 734 number.

I can't guarantee any kickbacks from Ross, but please take that punch. Find him, provoke him (talk about how awesome the spread is or something), and get him to go all Hoke-a-mania on you. My sanity needs that insurance right now.

I must confess, Hoke isn't my guy to be our coach but if he is, I cannot wait to use as many Hulk-related phrases and slogans as possible when describing him and our team, including:

  • Hoke-a-mania! (thanks Derek)
  • His 24" pythons
  • The Hoke-a-maniacs
  • Say Your Prayers and Eat Ya' Vitamins!
  • The Hulk Slam

What cha' gonna do when the Hokester runs wild on you!!!!!!!!!

I'm applying to business school at Michigan.  The admissions people call admitted applicants prior to releasing the decisions later this week.  Very suspenseful.  It's like the coaching search, but it impacts your future significantly.

I had to explain what football was to a teammate from a group project last semester. Literally had to start with, "Well, it's a sport, like soccer or rugby, but with completely different rules."

Granted, this is in CSE where lots of people are in the US for the first time...

If this ends up being one of those situations where you get accepted and everyone goes nuts with excitement only to find out right before NSD that you never had the necessary grades leading you to flirt with Louiville's B-school before settling on Kansas Christian Career Acadamy.... I'm going to be very disapointed

ZoneLeft: I was admitted to Ross off the waitlist (2010 alumnus).  if that ends up being the outcome, let me know and we can connect to talk about some next steps you should undertake.

Hell, if you get admitted...doesn't sound like you need much convincing, but I'm happy to help as needed re: career options and whatnot.

Figured this would be a good place to ask. I took the GMAT a few months ago with the intent of waiting a year to apply but have since received a ton of emails form schools asking me to apply. I also got a nice mailing from ND, telling me the application fee would be waved, and suggesting I apply for scholarships. Does anyone know what that means for my chances of getting in, or does ND send that letter to many? And do a lot of schools send emails asking you to apply after you take the GMAT?

It feels good to get the emails, but the skeptical side of me sees it as they may just be padding their admission statistics. I remember that BS from college applications.

I applied to, and was accepted at, ND.  They sent me that letter, but I get the feeling that people who get it probably meet a certain GMAT/GPA minimum.  Notre Dame is really trying to enhance its graduate programs, so they are actively recruiting solid candidates.  You probably have a good chance of getting in.

As for the emails, get used to it.  I don't know where you're getting them from, but I got them from about half of the top 20 programs and just about everyone you can think of beneath them.  GMAC, the company that administers the GMAT, creates mailing lists and sells them to schools.  You probably meet or exceed some minimum GMAT/GPA threshold for the schools that are sending you emails.  You can go to mba.com and delete your name if you're not interested.  I stayed on because I wanted to see what was out there.

As for applying now, you're late in the season.  I don't know what your stats are or where you want to go, but if you're going to shoot for the top schools, they are nearing their final deadlines.  B-school admissions typically go in three rounds.  The first two are where schools build the majority of their class and they fill in the blanks in round 3.  Thus, round 3 is extremely competitive.  Ross admits between 20-25% of applicants.  Their round 3 percentage is probably around 10%.  Stanford, the most difficult school to get into (6% admits) admits about 2% of round 3 applicants.

Let me know if you want to know more.

I remember getting a lot of these as well.  It likely is a positive sign based solely on GMAT scores, but that is only one part, of your profile.  In any case, I strongly suggest ignoring them, especially if you are a career switcher going full time.  Go to a top 10 school like Ross if you can get in.  The education probably isn't that much different, but the doors that are open to you are much better and more plentiful - companies come to you rather than you having to go to them which is way harder to get in.

Also, the cost differences might seem like a big deal now, but it really won't afterwards.

When I was applying to clinical psych PhD programs (~10 yrs ago), before cell phones (and our house didn't have caller ID), a buddy of mine called while I was out and left a phony message. He purposefully mumbled some stuff I couldn't really understand anything other than "This is Dr [unclear] calling from [mumble mumble] university to invite you for an interview. Please call me back at [unclear number]. I listened to that answering machine message about 30 times, had others try to listen, no avail. I was pissed, but in retrospect pretty funny.

Zone, not only am I pulling for you, I'm slightly jealous of you (okay, really effin' jealous!). Earning a MBA from Ross would be a dream come true, but one the more than likely will not happen. More like GVSU or Western for me. I'll tip one for you if we see a Hello Zone Left thread.
