Why Les is not more.

Submitted by Bluemandew on

I was just wondering if anyone could explain to me why we would want Les Miles as our coach? With his sleazy ness with over recruiting and the rumors of his negative recruiting against Michigan I don't want him anywhere near Schembechler Hall. Can any of you give me a good reason why he should be our coach other than he played here?

First--RUMORS--you ask a rhetorical question. Rumors are just that. Nothing proven, and really, they sound like sour grapes and justificationas.

As for the so called sleazy recruiting (over signing) and some of the allegations pertaining to illegal contact of recruits--hey, it's the SEC and I can't believe Miles is in the minority when it comes to violating those "dead periods"

Does that make it right? No, I guess not--but to say that disqualifies him is a bit over the top.

I just gotta say it's OK to be idealistic, but then again, didn't we just conclude a run of 9-4 seasons under Carr and 15-22 under Rodriguez?

So you believe just because he is coming here he would clean up his act because we say pretty please don't over sign and get rid of kids via a letter? Sorry if I don't believe that.

Short answer? Yes. YES I believe he would 'clean up his act"--in fact, I'd be willing to assume Brandon and he would be discussing this before any hiring. I mean, UM was just stung with a probation over lesser evils.

Let's just get over ourselves a bit and give these guys the benefit of the doubt.

Les may not be more. But Les is more than Hoke...

I don't like it either but the past week has been an eye-opener to a couple things:

A) Starting a coaching search on January 5th is a terrible decision.

B) Our situation is terrible enough that candidates aren't clamoring to be a UM head coach

I'm not a fan of Les Miles being our coach, namely for off-field issues but you can't deny that he gets things done on the field. I'm not terribly concerned about the oversigning because the Big Ten doesn't allow it anyway. It could backfire, but considering the apparent lack of interest from coaching targets, Miles seems to be the best option available

Why does everyone assume there is a lack of interest in the Michigan coaching job?  The only person that we can pretty reasonably assume turned us down is Harbaugh, and he took an NFL job for tons of money basicly where he lives.

There isn't anyone else we know of who turned us down.  Maybe some have.  It is also possible DB had several candidates he wanted to consider and that over the last 5 days he has spoken to several and is in the process of deciding finalizing which one to hire.

I'm trying hard to be patient until Wednesday.  After that I'll think about panicing with everyone else.

Fitzgerald, Pelini and Petersen are 3 names who flat out said they weren't interested. Whether we were giving them attention is unknown, but a decade ago, if this job came open, it's safe to assume coaches would be lining up to be interviewed.

Now? We've maybe interviewed 2 candidates. Sounds like a lack of interest to me...

They publicly said they weren't interested in response to press rumors while they are trying to finalize their recruiting class.  This is required in order to stop endless press speculation.

This doesn't mean that if DB called them and said he wanted them to coach Michigan that they would still say no.

It is possible that someone at Michigan contacted one or more of these guys and they said they weren't interested, but we don't know that.

I would go for Tony Dungy whi has said Michigan would be very hard to turn down. I am just not a big fan of win at all cost damn the torpedos and screw your players who are already on campus Miles.

I can't see him in the swill that is college football factory life. I think he'd be great at yale or Harvard, but smack dab in the middle of this cannibalistic world? I'd give him about six days before he'd need a month-long sabbatical on Mt Calvary.

You mean other than being LSU's winning-est coach?  OK.  Miles' grazing will save the Athletic Department $$$ on lawn care and landscaping.

....he isn't sleezy at all with regards to recruiting. If you worked in athletics, you would understand how recruiting works....no disrespect at all....I work in college athletics and at every level, you have kids and their parents upset for whatever reason because something happened to their son/daughter and MORE TIMES than not, it is 100% the kid's fault. The problem is that when the media grabs a hold of it and puts a microphone up to the coach's mouth, the coach has to take the high road and not completely dump on the kid or risk looking like an insensitive prick. Trust me,, this happens all the time and at all levels.

totally agree, but if you can do something like that and gain an advantage that everyone else in the conference is taking advantage of, you're going to be more apt to do it.(not saying I agree it's OK at all, I do think it's pretty messed up) But I also don't think he would even come close to getting away with it up here, especially with us being on probation.

I think everyone needs to check this out. Its on Rivals site and its a question by a Michigan fan talking about this situation.

This is a LSU fans answer about the QB who got cut.

http://Michigan.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=39&mid=141032964&sid=883&tid…

Chris Garrett wasn't competing hard enough for the starting qb position much less pushing the qb's ahead of him. At some point last season, coach Miles realized that Jefferson and Lee may not be the answer to LSU offensive woes so he approached Garrett about the possibility of him being a starter. He wanted Garrett to take more snaps during Spring practice and to apply himself more in the weight room. However, Garrett said that he was not ready to take on the responsibility of being a starter.

Les then released him of his scholarship. He yanked the scholarship because Garrett did not have the desire nor the fire to compete.

If you want to see all responses, its the one titled "Question for LSU fans"

EDIT: before anyone replies. I am not saying that this is the real truth, just something to consider.

I know he wins a lot, recruits well among other stuff but its hard for me to say I want him to come here. I just can't say I would fully support him as a Michigan coach knowing he does what he does.

Sorry I thought we just fired a coach who got crucified in the press for over practice. Now the at large favorite is a guy who just got hammered on espn for messing over kids he already had on campus. I don't see this going well.

Well if anything...the most important part to Les Miles is whether or not he is willing to continue our new found tradition of every 3rd kid having dreads. if he can do that then he is more than worth it.

Mostly due to the hypocrisy shown by the users here...I'm willing to bet some of you (no, not all of you) verbally pinned Rodriguez to a tree due to the violations here (which weren't his fault) and the "investigation" at WVU (which still hasn't found a damn thing).

Now those same people are perfectly okay with bringing in a coach who very clearly oversigns and cuts kids even if they are already moved in, then refuses to talk to them and lies about them to the media. I don't care if he "could get away with it" here at Michigan; the fact that he does it at all and finds it acceptable throws up red flags for me.

...I'm slowly leaning towards taking him over Hoke, though.

The violations under RR were his fault; they just weren't such an enormous deal (whether termed "major" by the NCAA or otherwise).  As the captain of the ship, everything on that ship is the coach's responsibility.  Let's follow the example of DB (who took responsibility for the violations even before he took over the AD position) and be done with the "no his fault" era of RR excuses.

As this site explicitly reported, the compliance issues started in 2007. Without the complete failure of those responsible to file CARA forms, it's likely the violations never would have been publicly reported. Blame Rich Rod all you want, but all he did was trust people getting paid to do their damn jobs to do at least a shred of their damn jobs. That much he is guilty of.

And no, this doesn't render my signature obsolete. An "excuse" implies a modicum of guilt.

C'mon man...your source to vindicate RR is "this site"?  "This site" that's more pro-RR than his own family?  Look...as I was saying...we need leaders in A2 who take responsibility.  Brandon wasn't even on the damn job yet when he accepted responsibility for violations that occurred while he was selling pizza!!  That's a leader.  The former coach and his followers blamed Lloyd, the media, the players, the NCAA, the fans but never...never accepted responsibility for the bottom line.  That's likely the most unfortunate byproduct of the RR era.

I didn't even note your signature line, but now that you mention it...maybe you should delete the first two words.
