Also reported by Chengelis. Sounds a lot like last search and we aren't actually looking at Miles with the AD trying to make sure we don't start.

The comments - semi-emphatic - by Hoke's agent, and the comments by Schad, if correct, lead me down one road.  The trees are lush, the grass green, the pavement sparkling, and naked women hide behind rocks and whisper the secrets of life.  Let's go, Hoke.

I sincerely think that David Brandon is looking to hire someone from outside of the Michigan "family."  If he wanted to hire Miles or Hoke, he wouldn't have needed to hire a search firm.

I think hiring a search firm just "ensures" he hires the best qualified candidate.

Edit: or at least gives the impression that he didn't just make this decision by himself and the people whispering in his ear.

Right, the search firm is to make up for not using a search committee, like Martin did last time.  To me just still just feels ad hoc--like the plan was Jesus H. H*******, and the back-up plan was, uh---aw, hamburgers!

Is coach Klein from The Waterboy available?  Seriously, anything is better than nothing.  Pretty soon he will be the only option left.  I know DB, let's wait it out and just see what happens next.  Who knows, maybe we can genetically recreate Vince Lombardi by signing day.

I think DB underestimated this process. He thought he could control the table but really, it's the clock that controls the table. Timing is everything and his has been really off. Just when I thought I couldn't get any more depressed about this. Plus, I'm at work right now and that just sucks.

Even if you don't want the guy, he wins games and has deep ties to UM.  He should a least be talked to.  Same applied to Patterson.  Not even convinced we talked to Harbaugh.  We've talked to two people, from the sound of it - Hoke and Fitzgerald.  I'm not saying either is a guaranteed failure, but why the hell would either be the first names on the list?

The question is, why would anyone in our athletic department or LSU's tell YOU who we are talking to and about what?  In these situations there are about a million details that the general public doesn't need to know and having those details out there just makes it harder to do business.

i love everyone on here bagging on DB. LULZ Do you people seriously believe you know how to run a coaching search? This isn't NCAA 2011. You people need to calm the fuck down.

edit: tO$U didn't hire sweatervest until Jan 17th. Let the process go on.

I don't pretend to know how to conduct a coaching search.  Then again, I don't think we need to be conducting one in the first place.  I was fine with the coach we had.  The only search I think we needed is the one that required us shelling out big bucks to a PROVEN DC who can recruit talent and actually coach defense.

The dominos are falling( no pun intended....really) and the program has gone from possibly turning the corner to being set back another 3-5 years while we hope our hire succeeds.

I'm starting to understand how Notre Dame feels.

seriously believe that Brandon knows how to run a coaching search?

All the experience as a corporate CEO?  Reinventing Domino's pizza?  He has certain skills, but they're hardly relevant to whether or not he has the ability to search for a new college football head coach.

I don't know that he's doing a terrible job.  But it sure seems like he's not reaching out to qualified options, given the number of "no one has contacted me"s that we're hearing from potential candidates. Meanwhile two 4-star defensive recruits who favored Michigan just chose other schools.

That's all the evidence we have to go on.  And what evidence there is suggests that he's NOT doing a great job.  The burden is shifting to him to show that he IS doing a good job (the simplest way would be to bring in a top coach, do it fast, and have it not be Brady Hoke).

I'd be more troubled about Brandon and the process if people like me, you and the rest of us really knew what was going on.  A coaching seach is not conducted in a public forum -- do we expect DB to create a blog and update it every 15 minutes about what's going on?  I expect the potential candidates are treating it the same way - maybe they're being truthful, maybe they're spinning, maybe they're flat out lying about what's going on.  As much as we'd like to know what's going on, we won't until it's a done deal.

1. Played under Bo.

2. Served as a successful regent to this university.

3. Mary Sue Coleman is one of the top University Presidents in the world. If DB is good for her, then he is good for me.

4. You obviously have no clue about how competitive the corporate world is. Major corporations operate just like an AD, who employ the use of head hunters when searching for new leaders, specifically CFO's, CEO, COO's.

All you are doing is crying just because your boy Jimmy Harbaugh wanted to join his brother in the NFL. Boo Hooo. I would rather DB spend his time taking a methodical approach than rush this decision. If you think DB has not been planning this for a long time, then you are very naive. AD's always have a tentative list for the next HC in case something happens (ie firing, or the HC getting killed in a car crash).

Stop being impatient. Ohio State named Jim Tressell head coach on Jan. 17.

My credibility here: over a decade on WS. I've seen a ton of CEOs take their fortunes and lives post-CEO life and run ventures in to the ground.

People may say: "Running a corporation has many parallels to running a AD: Organizing human capital, delegating, making tough decisions, etc.

BS!

There is a reason that the one of three guys who was in the running to replace Jack Welch took Home Depot and almost BK'd it - certain commercial capabilities are NOT transferrable. There is also a reason that KKR and Blackstone and Hicks Muse had a few bad decisions and lost their LPs a few bn here and there - just because you can make 5x buying a food company doesn't mean you can make the same return buying an old line industrial company.

Being smart in one area of the commercial world does NOT mean you can transfer to another era.

DB: You mismanaged the situation. You should've replaced Rich Rod midseason. OR, You should have had quiet conversations in October/November so you had things in place.

DB grades out a C- on handling this situation.

All the Rich Rod-haters had their time to be hysterically anti-RR for the past three years, so I don't see why the DB-haters shouldn't get their shot. At least RR had a track record to point to before he came to UM. Brandon has never worked in college athletics. He'll win respect when he does something that deserves it. Firing RR didn't. The timing of the firing didn't. Not having somebody lined up didn't. Piped in music didn't. Gah!
