CC: Brent Venables?
All this Harbaugh talk is boring. What if Harbaugh says no? Is Venables on the radar? Cuz this guy has been a DC for a long time. I'm surprised he hasn't been tapped as a coach, and he's a defensive minded coach, which is what Michigan should try. Clearly the Offensive minded coach thing isn't working out like excepted.

off the top of my head. so no. he gets tossed in the Hoke pile
January 4th, 2011 at 10:24 AM ^
That's ridiculous. It should be RR or Harbaugh period.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:25 AM ^
keeping RR is ridiculous
January 4th, 2011 at 10:26 AM ^
Ridiculous!

Disagree.

Be honest: Is it because you'd have to get a new username?
January 6th, 2011 at 9:11 AM ^
I thought about putting a /s in there so people knew I was referring to my username and not just disagreeing.
But then I also thought people would think I was using sarcasm to support his firing, which I didn't support ...so it was up to people to realize the joke for themselves.
...And I may just keep the name- who knows, in three years it might be a good reminder as to why you don't fire coaches too soon...

In my mind, RR can't come back after Saturday's game. I thought that it would be JH or RR but it's gotten out of hand. Somebody new needs to be in Ann Arbor next year.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:40 AM ^
you could see it in the press conference post game. that was just an "aww shucks, we just got our asses handed to us" moment. it was more along the lines of "fml, it's over here and i know it." i don't know how he comes back from that mindset. my guess is that he knows and is resigned to his fate.
for the record, i like RR and wished he was successful here, but i think both parties (RR and UM) are ready for the next chapter.

You're ridiculous.

January 4th, 2011 at 10:27 AM ^
I really don't like that it's come down to that but he'd be the biggest lame duck head coach in history if we brought him back.
If we don't get Harbaugh, I honestly have no idea what the hell we'll do.

Your signature adds a nice touch to that post
January 4th, 2011 at 10:27 AM ^
Yes. Clearly those are the only two individuals in the nation capable of succeeding at Michigan.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:31 AM ^
Hasn't RR proven that in 3 years he is not capable of succeeding here?
January 4th, 2011 at 10:27 AM ^
Keeping RR should not be an option at this point.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:31 AM ^
I don't know if it is even possible to keep RR. Folks, the wheels have fallen off the RR stagecoach, and I was one of its biggest fans.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:36 AM ^
Agree. RR is toxic goods now. I feel bad for him. He is a nice guy.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:24 AM ^
always surprised he doesn't get more head coach opportunities thrown his way. good coach
January 4th, 2011 at 10:31 AM ^
This is DB's ace in the hole.
/s Why not? This whole thing has now gone batshit crazy.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:43 AM ^
These are just the ideas coming from my head (no inside info):
Urban is not an option this year. He has stress-related health issues and is not going to coach this season.
However, if we do continue this (increasingly) awkward relationship with RR, I believe that Urban would be a candidate in 2011 to replace him (if he wins less than say... 10 games (including bowl) next season). Is this even a good option? I don't know.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:33 AM ^
Urban Meyer is too unstable to hire as a coach.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:42 AM ^
I'm not sure about "unstable". Michigan just needs a good coach to give them credibility and dig them out of this hole. If Meyer only came for three years, he could probably get this thing straightened out. I realize that he wouldn't be here for the next 20 years but that's not really what Michigan needs right now.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:37 AM ^
Michigan won’t hire a guy who has never been a head coach, and whom 99 percent of the fan base has never heard of.
He might do a terrific job, but we will never know. He is not an option Brandon would even remotely consider.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:40 AM ^
Venables is awesome, but I don't think they'll go coordinator like some of the others are saying.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:46 AM ^
Venables is not awesome. There is a reason why he never gets job offers. Another year like he had this year and he will probably be let go.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:41 AM ^
Is a more serious name than Hoke.
Let me ask this: if Hoke didn't have a UM pedigree...would he be in the conversation at all?
January 4th, 2011 at 10:49 AM ^
Honestly, wouldn't you rather they keep Rich Rod for one more season as opposed to hiring someone who is unqualified [via Brady Hoke or even Pat Fitzgerald]? If you lose out on one of your guys - Jim Harbaugh, Chris Peterson, Jon Gruden, whoever DB has his eye on - then wait a year, see what happens, see who becomes available (Urban Meyer!!!) and then reconvene the search.
We have such a favorable schedule next season that it would be dumb for us to destroy the team all for some second rate coach.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:49 AM ^
If you are going to go the college coordinator route... why not Kirby Smart?
January 4th, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
Look, lets be sensible about this. DB knew JH might not come here. DB knew he had to have a backup plan so this whole thing doesn't go Martin on him. We just don't know what the backup plan is, wait and see, case closed.
January 4th, 2011 at 10:52 AM ^
I'd be ok with Kirby Smart.
January 4th, 2011 at 11:05 AM ^
...until he makes his decision. But then, time to re-evaluate.
January 4th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
C'mon -- his name is Brent. That means he can coach only in Iowa/Nebraska/Kansas/Missouri/Oklahoma.
January 4th, 2011 at 1:22 PM ^
If we're mentioning assistants out there such as Benables, Malzahn might be worth a look as well, especially if we're looking for continuity in the offense. I'd probably prefer a more defensive minded coach if we went that route route though.
