OT- Bolden transferring from PSU?

Submitted by DingleberryFinn. on

Speculation around the Nittany Lion Rivals site is that Bolden is indeed transferring from PSU. Started as a true-frosh only to be replaced by McGolin, the walk-on. Huge loss.

I thought I read somewhere on the Interwebs that Kevin Newsome was expected to transfer as well. IF, big IF, they both transfer, PSU would be seriously screwed.

Remember when we all thought things were great b/c McGloin was going to have to start against us?  Remember how that worked out?

Lack of depth: bad.  Having two role players who didn't pan out transfer allowing more snaps to go to whoever is next: not so bad.

If Newsome and Bolden both transfer, PSU will be left with apparently only Matt McGloin and any other walk-ons at QB, if what was stated about Paul Jones being inelgible is true.  They have zero QBs in their current class.  Rob Bolden was a freshman that made freshman mistakes; the guy still has a lot of upside.  He is definitely not a role player, and figured to factor heavily into the QB situation for 2011 (he would only be a sophomore and generally that is when players make their biggest leap).

So, with Bolden and Newsome leaving, PSU will be left with three walk-ons and Paul Jones, if he can get eligible.  That ain't bad; it's really bad.

The writing is obviously on the wall at PSU for Bolden.  I wonder if he still thinks he can play QB at a BCS school?  Sometimes it's not a matter of talent, but "wrong place at the wrong time."  I also wonder if other coaches who recruited him still think he has the goods to succeed at a major school?

The writing is on the wall?  Because he couldn't hold onto the starting job as a true freshman?

I remember a time when freshmen weren't expected to be great as freshmen.  Those were the good ol' days...

I wonder if there is any chance that UM might pursue Bolden (assuming a coaching change)? He is similar to Devin but is probably a more polished passer at this point.

if you're transferring back to your home state, where you would be paying in-state tuition. Still not free (or likely to happen), but its not like he'd be on the hook for $40k a year.

PSU still has Paul Jones, correct?  He was pretty highly regarded coming out of HS and redshirted this season I believe.  They will need another QB but still could be okay if Jones develops.

Talk about a roller coaster ride of emotions.

Bolden earns the starting spot as a true freshman, mom and dad drive to Happy Valley to watch his game, everybody's all giddy with excitement.......and now dad's saying "He's not happy at Penn State" and "if it was up to me, he'd definitely leave, without a doubt."

My oh my, what a difference a few months makes.

Devlin seemed to do just fine there and will probably be drafted.  Maybe Miami now that Golden is there.

Or, maybe his Dad is shopping the SEC for $$ that his son "won't know about".
