Practice Practice We Are Talking About Practice Some More
I don't know about all this access, man. It's a lot to keep up on. The latest round of newsbits:
- Freshman linebacker Marcus Witherspoon does have a clearinghouse issue and will not participate in fall practice. They hope to get him in in September, at which point he's very likely to redshirt.
- The offense sucks, or the defense is good. Or both: "I didn't think we progressed a whole lot. I liked what I saw out of the defense today. They put a few new packages in and that may have caused some of the confusion on offense, but I thought our offense really didn't take any steps forward."
- Tight ends are "the most consistent group" they have; not surprising since they're the most veteran.
- Schilling singled out as an "emerging leader."
- Lopata "picked up where he left off."
- Moosman remains ahead of Molk but the competition is still ongoing.
- McGuffie, Shaw, Odoms, and Robinson called out as freshman contributors.
- Cissoko and Martin look like they'll play; freshman linebackers described as "very good" even without Witherspoon -- who Rodriguez called "Spoon."
- Corners should be very good; Trent praised, Woolfolk too, to go with the Cissoko stuff. Warren unmentioned but should be good.
- Spoon!
- No position switches "yet."
- On why the offense is having a much harder time of it in fall: "Part of it was our defense was still learning and they weren't in shape. It's hard to make plays on defense when you're trying to catch your breath, got your hands on your hips."

Wednesday was the first day in full pads. Weather problems aside, Rodriguez wasn’t very pleased. “It was terrible at the start of practice so when we went inside we started all over again,” he said. “It got a little better. The only time we moved the ball was when the lights were out because the defense couldn’t see who had it."
how did that work out for wvu's offense last year. oh yeah, fine.
I had to re-read the last point several times and guess what is being said. The only way I can decipher it is:

Yeah, I kind of tried to read it that way, but (1) isn't both offense and defense on the same training program and and thus what does discussing the defense being gassed in the past have what relevence to the progress of the offense now? (2) by fall does he mean now, which down here anyway, is still summer?

And it was last year that the offense was veteran and the defense was "still learning." This past spring I would think that, although it was the defense that is now veteran, both side were still learning RR's schemes.
I don't think Rich Rod has much to gain from building up hype about our offense.
Expect mediocrity and a mediocre performance will not be tragic. If we expect mediocrity and see a solid performance this fall, we will be impressed.
I don't want to be disappointed like almost every summer blockbuster film has disappointed me over the years. Hype pisses me off. I like a good, honest, downright critical view. With a S&C coach like Barwis, how can Rodriguez be the Coddling type.
