Practice Practice We Are Talking About Practice Some More Comment Count

Brian

I don't know about all this access, man. It's a lot to keep up on. The latest round of newsbits:

  • Freshman linebacker Marcus Witherspoon does have a clearinghouse issue and will not participate in fall practice. They hope to get him in in September, at which point he's very likely to redshirt.
  • The offense sucks, or the defense is good. Or both: "I didn't think we progressed a whole lot. I liked what I saw out of the defense today. They put a few new packages in and that may have caused some of the confusion on offense, but I thought our offense really didn't take any steps forward."
  • Tight ends are "the most consistent group" they have; not surprising since they're the most veteran.
  • Schilling singled out as an "emerging leader."
  • Lopata "picked up where he left off."
  • Moosman remains ahead of Molk but the competition is still ongoing.
  • McGuffie, Shaw, Odoms, and Robinson called out as freshman contributors.
  • Cissoko and Martin look like they'll play; freshman linebackers described as "very good" even without Witherspoon -- who Rodriguez called "Spoon."
  • Corners should be very good; Trent praised, Woolfolk too, to go with the Cissoko stuff. Warren unmentioned but should be good.
  • Spoon!

  • No position switches "yet."
  • On why the offense is having a much harder time of it in fall: "Part of it was our defense was still learning and they weren't in shape. It's hard to make plays on defense when you're trying to catch your breath, got your hands on your hips."

on whether this praise is to be taken as [the opposite of praise]? i mean, we all know how LC operated (praise all the guys who have sucked it up in order to hopefully develop confidence in said suckitude-ridden guys).

Is there a reason Spoon (kills me -- I was a regular Tick viewer several years ago) can't practice given his issues with the clearinghouse? I can understand not playing in games, but why is he held out of practice?

this was what rod had to say august 8, 2007:

Wednesday was the first day in full pads. Weather problems aside, Rodriguez wasn’t very pleased. “It was terrible at the start of practice so when we went inside we started all over again,” he said. “It got a little better. The only time we moved the ball was when the lights were out because the defense couldn’t see who had it."

how did that work out for wvu's offense last year. oh yeah, fine.

mjvancam - until he "clears" he hasn't qualified for a scholarship yet - so he probably hasn't shown up.

Let's face it- Michigan is going to struggle on offense- they have no experience on that side. We all know the defense will have to carry them. Perhaps if Barwis were to get a hold of the playbook the offense would be INCREDIBLE

It's only day 4 today of fall practice, so still time to get things together. Not that I'm expecting the offense to master Rich Rod's system, but if they're decent, then we should be alright this season.

I had to re-read the last point several times and guess what is being said. The only way I can decipher it is:

On why opposing offenses will have a much harder time of it in the fall: last year our defense was still learning and they weren't in shape...

I had assumed that the line about the defense having a hard time making plays was about the defense in the spring when they were out of shape. Now they are in shape and...

Yeah, I kind of tried to read it that way, but (1) isn't both offense and defense on the same training program and and thus what does discussing the defense being gassed in the past have what relevence to the progress of the offense now?  (2) by fall does he mean now, which down here anyway, is still summer?

Maybe Brian will translate.

I think the conditioning affects the defense more, since it's more tiring for the defense to chase.  In the spring, everyone was out of shape, and that affected the defense more, but now everyone is in great shape and the defense is making things harder on the offense.

I think some of you guys are over-analyzing this. I'm pretty sure RR was saying that the D, which by all means SHOULD be ahead of the offense right now given its experience, happened to look so-so in the spring because it was learning the new system. Now it has gotten its bearings and it's become a good unit.

Offenses always struggle compared to defenses early in the year, same is true at any level... put on top of that the experience and the new system and it is nothing to get too worked up about. He's probably just trying to keep his guys focused because he knows they have a lot to learn and only 23 days left until game 1... 23 days, god it's been a long summer... especially with the Tigers bullpen...

I don't think Rich Rod has much to gain from building up hype about our offense.

Expect mediocrity and a mediocre performance will not be tragic. If we expect mediocrity and see a solid performance this fall, we will be impressed.

I don't want to be disappointed like almost every summer blockbuster film has disappointed me over the years. Hype pisses me off. I like a good, honest, downright critical view. With a S&C coach like Barwis, how can Rodriguez be the Coddling type.
