OT: UM Early Admissions Decisions

Submitted by the_white_tiger on

I just thought I should share some good news with the rest of the MGoCommunity, a lot of negativity has been going on lately, but today I was given the opportunity to attend the University of Michigan in the form of an acceptance e-mail. It has always been my dream to attend UM, and once it became painfully apparent I would not be the next Braylon Edwards, I went for the more academic route, and it's great that I can finally realize that dream. 'Tis the season for a lot of great news coming to high school seniors.

Go Blue!

P.S. No, I cannot kick field goals either, sorry.

I remember when I received my MSU acceptance (indeed, MSU), and found out where I was living, I got the dimensions of the rooms and used a tape measure and chalk to draw out my dorm room on the driveway, and plan how I'd set it up.

Always best IMHE to live in the freshman dorms.  The people I knew who had to live with upperclassmen had a fraction of the fun/social life I did.  In a frosh community, no one knows anyone, so there's no need to penetrate already established groups.  It's a goddamn fantastic free for all.

Congrats again - college is the greatest 4 year period in life (to the best of my knowledge), and the University of Michigan is a phenomenal institution that will open many doors.

Congrats sir, I too received my decision today, and got deferred. I was hoping I would know for sure either way and put an end to all the stress, but looks like i'll be waiting till april now. Ah well, it will be worth it if I end up getting accepted.

Got a verbal from my little brother today.  He'll join the 2011 recruiting class.  This is a big one, first commit from Renaissance since Carson Butler and Andre Criswell.  5* student.

I had to sign in from my friend's computer just to +1 you for that. Congratulations!

It was always my dream to go to Michigan and getting that acceptance letter was one of the happiest days of my life. (Kinda crazy that they do it by email now)

Count me in for advising on only doing the extremely bare minimum necessary to graduate high school and try to stretch it out for 5 if you can. Also, there's so many great groups on campus, look around and find one that you like and get involved. And not to sound lame, but take full advantage of all of the opportunities that only a place like the University of Michigan can provide.

Enjoy these next 5 years, they go by before you know it. Go Blue!!!

I feel for you man, going to CC and having that gpa and act score, I would have been disappointed as well. I go to Brother Rice and have a lower gpa and act score than you. I was half expecting to get rejected though, so I am at least thankful to still have a shot. I too was already accepted to that other state school, which it seems everyone with a functioning brain cell has been. Here's to gaining acceptance by mid-April, good luck man.

especially since I had 2 classes the last semester...

Congrats!  It is among the greatest choices I made in my life, and I hope it is for you as well.

Congrats to those of you who have been accepted. I applied early too, but I have not heard back yet. I do live in Ohio, so that may be the reason. Now I will be checking my email every other minute. Right now I'm nervous as hell.

football team is better than mine... 3-9 was kind of a bummer. Your 2nd home game ever will be under the lights, how cool is that!! Pretty cool. If your roommate is not familiar with the game of football, you must quickly teach and convert him. Immediately, actually. That's your first homework assignment. Go!

Well, one of my best friends has gone with me to tons of home games, and is actually a frequent reader/lurker. Interestingly, our dads roomed together at U of M in their fraternity so it would be cool to continue the legcacy. He knows football.

Cosigned on the football thing, freshman year has ND, Nebraska, and Ohio State at home! I'm pumped! (But 2012 looks like it will suck).

And welcome.

Here's the gameplan:

1.  Join the "91 club". *

2.  Join at least one club - probably of your major.

3.  Join another one that's not.

4.  Explore Ann Arbor.

5.  Attend at least one of every sport - including clubs.

6.  Enjoy!

* not an actual club, but more a philosophy - get at least 91 on this exam, in case the next is a 89!

Cannot stress the "join a club" recommendation.

I joined a club for my major - ended up getting a $3,000 scholarship from it and it looks good on my resume.  Wasn't the most fun, but hey, 3K and a resume builder.

Found a campus job I loved and continued into Grad School here.  4.5 years in it was the best decision of my life and I've met all my best friends through it.

EDIT:

Also attended every sport... you GOTTA do this.  Volleyball, softball, soccer are all a blast.  Field hockey and baseball are also fun on nice, sunny days.  Even if I didn't have a ton of interest in the game, why not take a book, enjoy the weather and watch some of the non-revenue sports for free on a beautiful Ann Arbor fall/spring day?

Also, explore AA.  There's so much more than campus... once you're a junior you'll be able to enjoy the wonders of Washington St - ABC, Habana, Peak, Blue Tractor, etc.  And then when you're a rich alum you get to live it up on main street.  Fun times all around.

Treat everything like you're there temporarily.  Yeah, it's obvious that you're not there permanantly, but it's a mind set that will serve you well.  And yes, that includes your school work too.  There won't be another time when you'll be able to treat some relatively obscure french play as the most important thing in the world.  Good luck and congratulations.  As a 40-something year old, damn I wish I could go back.  Sigh.

sorry for the attention-jack-

I hope I get to join you. I didn't have the common sense to apply early (the essay prompts are awful -- they're the only two essays for any school that I haven't finished yet) so I won't know my status until April

congratulations anyways

I remember getting my acceptance email, the title was "Getting ready for Michigan", before I opened it I knew what it meant. It's funny because earlier that day a friend was asking me about what college I wanted to go to. I told her Michigan but I didn't think I was going to get in. Enjoy a great moment and welcome to the Michigan community.

This a little ot, but I was wondering if anyone on the blog went to or knows about Macalester College. I just got accepted there. Hearing the UM acceptances make me jealous but class sizes and taiwanese grad student/teacher accents scare me. Definitely plan on grad school at UM.

Our daughter will graduate from there next week.  She loved it there.  It's a very, very different school than Michigan as I'm sure you know.  It's a very small, liberal arts college with kids who are very smart and a little quirky.  The class sizes are really small and you get to know profs really well.  She doesn't regret her decision one bit.  She's had the time of her life for the past 3 1/2 years.  (She turned down Michigan's Honors program (too big of a school for her) and some other "big name" schools, large and small, to go there).

My advice: You need to really visit the school to make sure that you will fit in with the personality of the type of kid who goes there.  Mpls/St. Paul is a great area and if you can, you really need to visit.

This news from an anonymous fellow MGOBLOGer put a smile on my face.  I hope my kids choose to attend Michigan someday.  I went there long ago but the memories are still vivid.  I'll bet college is complete madness (in a good way) now!  West Quad was tremendous but that was a long time ago.

Wow how things have changed. Back in my day (graduated in '77) they had "rolling" admissions. I applied in late August and got my acceptance letter the first week of October. That made senior year a lot more relaxing and fun.

Can you still request a roommate? Write down Demetrius Hart. When they let him know you are his roomie then no way can he decommit.

Congratulations! Like many others here I had the same acceptance a few years ago. As an international student I had an awesome time in Ann Arbor my freshman year but due to a few different factors had to leave the university. For me it was probably the best move and am doing fine now on my way to a top degree at a top university in England and a job sorted at an industry leader for when I graduate in a year and a half (/brag). I still can't help but feel that I missed out at U of M. It was a truly great experience and I hope you take advantage of all it has to offer but keep focus on why you are there - to earn a degree from one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Good luck and Go Blue!
