Andrew Peterson TE Prospect?

Submitted by umhero on

Andrew Peterson I saw this picture on the front page at Go Blue Wolverine, with the headline "U-M courting Texas Jumbo Athlete."  So I decided to do a little googlestalking.

Andrew Peterson
Dallas, Texas
Seagoville High School
TE/DL
6'5"
250 lbs
40:4.8 secs

Offers from Arkansas, Nebraska (visiting this weekend), Texas A&M (visited last weekend), & Utah.  Recently visited by Texas and Tennessee.  Scout projects him as an OT, but looking at his video (from a fans perspective) he doesn't seem to know how to use his hands to block.  He seems to have good feet though.  He has some amazing plays at TE and some great defensive line plays.

This article says he wants to play TE and not D.

“I won’t even talk to a school if they mention me playing defense,” Peterson said. “Tight end is where I see myself playing. I love to get the ball in my hands and make plays. I like running over people and making people miss. I also love blocking and pancaking people.”

Looks like a project that could grow into something special, but I'd love to see him on the d-line.

Is it just me or does he not look like he is leaning forward before the snap on every play?

He sure is a big gulp though. Physical player.

As long as he doesn't say "I'd dominate in another offense" 3 years after he committs, I don't see a ploblem.

I wouldn't mind getting this kid.  He definitely looks like a project as far as technique goes.  His stance, his footwork, and his blocking need some work.  But it's tough to find guys that big who are that athletic.  I'd love to see him play DE or even DT, too.

By the way, some coaches teach "shoulder blocking" rather than "hand blocking."  So the fact that he uses his shoulder to drive fools into the ground might not be that big of a deal (although the rawness of the other aspects of his game makes me think that he's kind of out there just playing backyard football without a whole lot of direction).

...Anyone else see that at 1:45?

But his recruiting is even larger than the OP suggested

"It has gotten crazy just since Monday," Peterson said on his way to his first official visit at Texas A&M. "The guy at TexasPreps sent my highlights to thirty schools and within two days I heard from at least twenty. My coach said colleges were still stopping by the school this morning but I was already on my way to A&M."

Oklahoma got in contact too...sounds like a major late sleeper stud.

How does a kid that size who seems to be about the only viable option for his quarterback to throw to slip under the radar.  Especially since he is from Texas.  Any idea what his grades look like or if he has a quallifying score on his tests?  I don't see how a kid that size can go unnoticed.

You are probably right Magnus.  I would still like to see the GPA on that boy and his qualification scores though.  I did see that his team only went 6-5 in the season so that might have something to do with it as well.

We had a kid who played the same position for us this year at my alma mater who is damn near as big.  6-6 240 as a junior and he is good when he wants to be.  Was double teamed the enitre state finals game against GR West Catholic and still managed to get into the backfield.  Smooth hands and fiesty attitude.  Hopefully he improves over the summer more and teams will come calling.

don't know if that nickname would work at UofM (sarcasm)

Re: Spread O - I don't know any coach who would not want a huge TE who can run/catch/block

He does seem ferocious, and regardless of where he goes there does seem to be an emphasis on TEs in the pros these days (2 TE sets, the Pats drafted 8 or something this past year)

If he can work hard on his blocking and catching he wil be a very marketable player

Damn the kid is a beast! He seems to be a bit of a project (leaning forward, blocking could be a little better) but that is ok. He seems to have pretty good hands and is really athletic for his size.

You basically reiterated exactly what Magnus said.

I wouldn't mind getting this kid.  He definitely looks like a project as far as technique goes.  His stance, his footwork, and his blocking need some work.  But it's tough to find guys that big who are that athletic.  I'd love to see him play DE or even DT, too.

If not, you do a pretty good impression.........

Nothing really new to add what has already been said, but he definetly has the size & physical attitude needed to excel at the next level. The tipping point will be  the developement of  his fundamentals (blocking, footwork, ball security, etc).

I can see this guy playing as a TE in our system.  We had our TEs in the backfield and as lead blockers a lot this year, and I think Peterson could dominate in that role.

How is a guy with offers from Nebraska, Arkansas and TAMU a 2 star?  If he's good enough for those schools, he should get at least 3 stars, considering there are TONS of 3 stars who would love offers from just one of those schools.
