OT: Bucket List (regarding sports)

Submitted by phills39 on

So, what would be the top five games that you would give anything to witness (regardless of sport, team, etc.)?

I've never been to the World Cup but I've been to the Rose Bowl '05 (my senior year), Superbowl Detroit and Vancouver Olympics '10.  And although nothing beats MICHIGAN football in my book, go to the Olympics.  It was the best experience of my life.  Just incredible to see people from all over the world competing and showing national pride.  It was extremely organized and easy to get around and shocking not that expensive once you get there.  Best of all I stayed right on Whistler mountain and got to ski quite literally next to the athletes.  Team India was hilarious.  The Vohn v. Mancuso rivalry was quite obvious and funny as well.  Hockey tickets were out of control but with my lift ticket could ski right up next to the skiing practice and events.  The luge was cool too and near impossible to take a photo of them while passing.  I have so many incredible photos it was hard to choose.  Seriously go!

If you actually want to be really close to action, and meet riders and stuff, go the Giro or Vuelta. There are fewer fans, it's much more laid back, and frankly the racing in the Giro has far outshined the tour in recent years.

If you just want to go to the most famous race in the world, go to the Tour (duh). The Dutch corner of Alpe D'Huez is outrageous. I went in 2005 and viewed the finish at Ax-3 Domaines and the St. Etienne TT. The finishing circuits in Paris were great too. You get to see the laps of the actual race, and then the riders doing a parade lap. I was there for Lance's last tour, and I hate to admit his speech brought a tear to my eye.

Can i go back in time to a place I've already been?   I was there for the 97 Rose Bowl and it still sends chills down my spine when I think of the game.  As a matter of fact, when I went under for Cancer surgery and was told to go mentally to my "happy place" I went back to the bottom corner of the Rose Bowl.....about 2 minutes after the game ended....watching the team run at me and into the stands as the band set up and played the Victors over and over and over in the California night.   The team had done it....we were National Champions.

My bucket list is to get that night over again.

so that is scratched off my list (didn't need to go back).  Must admit not much knowledge of the "horses" - but figured I needed to go at least once.  Yeah ... infield admission.  Hot day  -  with Mint Juleps (not a great combo).  So many people were trashed that they didn't even see the Derby (its like the 8th or 9th race of the day).

Gotta say I am glad I can say I went.   PS - you can go from the infield over to the paddock area to see the "money folks".

Love Indy ... this year will be my 35th straight 500 !   IMHO  -  the most exciting moment in sport is when the field takes the green flag at Indy (those drivers are fucking nuts !!!).

Go Blue !

A Michigan victory at Ohio State, probably the last thing I do on my bucket list cause I'll die there.

A round at the Masters.

A game at Fenway Park

And a round of golf at Pebble Beach.

Your avitar picture had to have been taken from my row of seats at the game.   In my minds eye I can see Charles elevating to get that ball and take away the touchdown that would have given Washington State a 14 - 0 lead.  And that pic is exactly how it looked from where i was sitting.

Stealing a keg from "The Barn" at Columbus.

Pissing all over the horseshoe hammered.

Getting arrested in Columbus by 17 cops while getting maced and singing "Hail to the Victors"

(Not that any of these represents my personality as a Michigan fan...but you did say Bucket List)
