Big Chill - Chants?

Submitted by His Dudeness on

Hey there sports fans,

The Big Chill will be my first Michigan Hockey game since a couple of GLI trips when I was a kid (The old man is a Tech alumn/ huge Tech hockey fan). Are there any chants or cheers I/we should be aware of before this Saturday? Sorry I have never been to Yost (I feel bad about that honestly), but I would like to know some cheers so I don't look like an asshole.

Thanks,

Dude

The AD under Brandon has given up their fight against the student section. Ski poller is starting to take off and some of us are trying to add cum guzzler after ski poller. The hockey band still plays during the cheer to cover us up, but I have yet to see anyone get kicked out, especially in section 17 (the rowdy section).

If the wave is not instituted at least once in the Big House. There will be two intermissions. Plenty of time to mix a little football with a little ice hockey.

Well, we need an entire intermission for I Can't Turn You Lose, plus another intermission I assume for random happenings the athletic department plans.  Since the wave is typically started in the third quarter while leading, it will probably be the third period while leading.

When opposing player gets a penalty (ref raises hand) everyone raises hand and yells

"oooooooohhhhhhh"

until said player steps in at which point

"See yah!

Followed by a

"chump dick wuss, douchebag (hand swoosh motion), cheater, bitch, whore"

There is more, but I am old and don't know what has been added to this. In cases where a player has a funny last name *ahem Cockburn* then that might be added.

Its a hard chant to learn, and in this venue, will be harder, so probably stick with

"Oh see yah"

If Michigan scores: its time for a goal count.  Raise your hand with the total number of Michigan Goals and wait for the assists and goal to be announced at which point you will hear someone yell out "Goal Count" with a crow response of "ready"

Example: Michigan's second goal: (hold two fingers up), "goal count" "ready"

"one, two. We want, moooooooore goals. sieve sieve sieve sieve sieve sieve sieve, its all your fault, its all your fault, its all your fault" followed by a 3-peat cowbell go blue chant

Not likely, but let's say somehow the heavens align and allow the spartans to tally a goal.

Chant: "Ugly parents!" until opposing teams stop celebrating. can be changed to "ugly sisters" or "Jersey chasers" when appropriate.

Just a few my friend, just a few.

If everything after "C-Ya" were to die a sudden and violent death, I wouldn't shed a tear.  It was amusing back in 1992 when it was just chump.  Now, not so much.  When your beloved coach of 25 years walks onto the ice before a game (with his grandchild, IIRC) and requests that you stop doing it, it's probably time to take a hint.

in 98-03 the only addition I was aware of was whore. The parts before, were always said so quickly, that it was hard to destinguish between the different words.  And since I hear most of these words multiple times on the radio/ tv, and even here, I am not to worried about scaring any children. I'm not so sure that Red is really that offended by the chant either.  He constantly has stated how much the crowd helps enrgize the team, and I don't think he'd trade our crowd for any other group.

That being said, my favorite chants were always the ones that were personalized for a team, i.e. adding Cockburn at the end because that was the players last name, or chanting "Florence, Florence" evertime Nightingail entered the ice.

So you think an organized cheer of "chump, dick, wuss, douchebag, asshole, prick, cheater, bitch, whore, slut, cocksucker" yadda yadda yadda is a perfectly acceptable way to support the home team?

I'm not saying that you wouldn't hear any or all of those from an average drunk fan at an NFL game.  Some of them aren't as bad as others, and yes, you might hear most of them on a cable TV show that's rated TV-MA.

Scaring children isn't really the issue.  I just think it's trashy and taken too far.  We're not OSU; we're better than that.  The University agrees, and so does Red (emphasis is mine):

U-M hockey coach Red Berenson also took a proactive approach with Wolverine fans. Prior to the Oct. 17 [2003] game at Yost Ice Arena, Berenson came on the ice to address fans about some of their cheers. Berenson objected to one particular cheer: When a player from a visiting team goes to the penalty box, he is serenaded with a "see ya" chant, followed by a stream of obscenities.

Michigan coach Red Berenson, who has won the Stanley Cup, two NCAA championships and the NHL Coach of the Year award and has universal respect in the hockey world, made a personal appeal to earlier this season. He stood with his grandson before a packed house on Oct. 17 and asked fans to stop the chant.  Again, not every chant. Just the one.

As you've noted, there are equally clever and creative ways to make it funny...and still fun.

I said it wasn't about scaring children (after you said you weren't too worried about scaring any children).  And I never said it wasn't because of kids.  Clearly, kids are one aspect of the issue, but not the only one.

I also didn't say that refusal to mind the chant makes you an unsuitable parent.  In fact, I made no comment at all on your suitability as a parent.  I simply questioned whether you'd be comfortable participating in that cheer with your two kids sitting in your lap.  And then I decided that I probably didn't want to know the answer.

We can agree to disagree.  In the meantime, carry on with the public profanity.  After all, it's your First Amendment right, decorum be damned!

No you did not. You told me I didn't have kids, and then said you didn't want to know. Pretty easy to interprit that. If you had asked me, then I would have told you no. I am not even planning on performing the cheer, but I have no problem with the student section (that I was proudly part of) performing chants at a game, even if they are vulger.

Way to go with the Firrst Amendment too. Always a good sign when someone you are having a discussion wih complains about words getting twisted, and then tries to make it like this was part of my argument.

if UM passed out leaflets asking for the cheer at 2 minutes remaining in the 2nd period, you are correct. if he was walked out to center ice, you would be correct. a fan-based cheer for a recruit is not a violation

13.10.5 Prospective student-Athlete’s visit. A member institution shall not publicize (or arrange for publicity of) a prospective student-athlete’s visit to the institution’s campus. Further, a prospective student-athlete may not participate in team activities that would make the public or media aware of the prospective student-athlete’s visit to the institution (e.g., running out of the tunnel with team, celebratory walks to or around the stadium/arena, on-field pregame celebrations). Violations of this bylaw do not affect a prospective student-athlete’s eligibility and are considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1. (Revised: 1/14/97, 9/12/03)

Can someone compile a list of the "official" current chants?  That way, if we can all print off copies, those around us will have a clue.  Heck, I'd be willing to print off a ton at work, carry them into the stadium, and tell people to take one and pass it on.

I think it started because there was some opposing player named Yip (UNO?) and whenever he got the puck the yipping commenced.  Really threw off his game.  Then people started yipping when we cleared on a penalty kill.  But now there is icing on the penalty kill, so how has yost handled the Yipping situation?

Hopefully we won't need to break out the FYS chant.

Started early in the 07-08 season, when Boston U came to Yost for two games, which MIchigan swept (ha!).  Yip was a defenseman on BU's team (apparently of Asian decent).  I remember the token BU fanbase in attendance that weekend trying to characterize that taunt as racisim on the part of the M fans.
