When will the staff changes come?
A word of framing up front, this thread (or at least my intent with this thread) is based on the presumption that Rich Rodriguez will be retained as the Head Coach at Michigan but that there will be changes made to his coaching staff. That being said, I think most of us agree that Greg Robinson is not long for Schembechler Hall.
Assuming that the firing of Gerg is a given at this point, when does the ax fall? Will we see it come next week in the immediate aftermath of the regular season? Do we try to bring in a new coordinator in time for the bowl practices/game? Or will we see a temporary DC in the bowl game with the new guy not really arriving until later in the winter?

anyway, we will most likely see GERG go immediately after OSU, as nice as it would be to see a new DC get those extra 15 practices, i dont see how we will be able to snag one before our bowl seeing how any DC of merit that i can think of is prepping his team for whichever bowl they are heading to this year. So unless any of our serious DC prospects are not going to a bowl this year, we will not see one till after our bowl.
November 24th, 2010 at 3:37 AM ^
What are the chances of getting Casteel from WV? Since RR is so dead set on running this 335 defense and Casteel seems to be the only guy in the country to have success with it, might as well open the checkbook and bring him in.
It can't get worse...
November 24th, 2010 at 9:20 AM ^
and have thought about it myself. I don't know the answer but my if I could have my way it would be after OSU to let them have the bowl practices. As to whether any would leave at that time.....Didn't RR ditch WVU after his regular season finished? I think it can be done.
Again though, I am not sure you pull the trigger on Gerg just for the sake of change. If we can't get a top notch DC I think the continuity he would provide coming back for the 3rd year would outweigh bringing in some mediocre DC.
I want the best of the best and if we can't get it this year, give Gerg one more attempt at making something happen.......I can't believe I just said that but.....
November 24th, 2010 at 9:56 AM ^
I could be wrong but Im pretty sure RichRod wanted to coach WVU for the bowl game but wasnt allowed to.
November 24th, 2010 at 11:21 AM ^
The defensive staff wouldn't be let go until after the bowl game. You're not going to get a coordinator before bowl season ends.
If the whole staff is dismissed, it'll be right away, followed by a dump truck full of platinum appearing on Dan Mullen's driveway.

November 24th, 2010 at 3:07 AM ^
Didn't you hear? Eastern was so wowed by GERG's beaver they offered him the head coach position. I can see why. GERG's beaver has absolutely no trouble getting in the face of its players and motivating them.

David Brandon: I'm sorry Rich, but we've decided to go in a different direction.
RR: But Dave, you can't fire me yet, I just told Justice Hayes I was sticking around forever!

With these two, you better be careful that they don't promote Gerg to HC because he hasn't been challenged enough at his current position.

Just because you say things over and over doesn't mean they are true. There are no staff changes. If there are staff changes you will know exactly when they happen.

after the Ohio State game, if will be Coach Rod that is packing his bags. I do not see any changes being made to the defensive scheme before the Pick Your Texasish Bowl, even if Robinson is fired.. In fact, the month in between the Ohio State and the Bowl game could be seen as an opportunity to flesh out that the defensive problems are not a result of scheme if a month to prepare results in a coherent product.
On the other hand, while I am not going on record with any prediction and actually believe M is going to show up on Saturday, if and only if, Michigan is taken to the shed (a 52-17 type job - and once again not my prediction), Michigan will have a head coaching vacancy by Dec. 1, and Greg Robinson will likely have an opportunity to show that he can coach a defense if given the opportunity to call his own shots.
Justice Hayes committment, bewildering sure, but bearing no relevance to the likelihood that Coach Rod will be retained. If anything, the committment would be more probative of a change at the top than it would status quo..
Summary, any coaching change before the bowl game = Coach Rod is fired.

dressing becomes soaked with pus:
Important advice for patients:
• Avoid touching the abscess with bare hands.
• Keep the abscess covered with a clean, dry dressing. If the dressing becomes wet
with pus, it should be carefully changed and thrown away in a plastic bag. Pus is very
contagious.
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer.
• Avoid contact-sports and gym class until the wound is completely healed.
• Avoid close skin-to-skin contact with other people to keep the infection from spreading.

I am part of the party that believes whole heartedly that GERG will be gone after OSU. I hope so. Is there any reason he should stay?
How will we all react if the coaching doesn't change, esp on D, and GERG stays around another year? I will be very frustrated. How likely is this?
November 24th, 2010 at 9:10 AM ^
I think we will fire him after this season. Our poor conference performance is his fault (as detailed on this board over and over). If we fire him, its clear things will turn right around.
November 24th, 2010 at 9:17 AM ^
What's going on with the defense. Is it gerg or is it richrod constantly in his ear about this 3-3-5 nonsense. We saw how the 3-3-5 works against Wisconsin. I'll be nice and call it ineffective. Bottom line we need a scheme change 4-3, 3-4, multiple, as well as a total defensive overhaul and richrod needs to stay away from our d. Tackling had been bad, reads have been awful, Guys aren't developing (Ezeh, etc.), which is on Gerg and the d staff. And can we please get a special teams coach and find a kicker?
November 24th, 2010 at 9:24 AM ^
And I know we are young Which is part of the reason tackling has been bad, but it's no excuse for Wisconsin running 32 of 33 times and still scoring 24 points on us in the second half. Thats all because wisconsin was bigger and more physical than our 3-3-5. 8 guys under 240 versus 7 guys over 285. I'll give you one guess who wins that battle in the ground game. I support richrods fully but he needs to give up on the scheme. For those of you who want him gone, think about what happens when our d is competent and we out up 40 points a game. We have won six of seven games with nothing but an explosive but young and mistake prone offense. That offense has a full year under their belt and the defense returns nearly everyone next year. The future is bright. Buck. The. Fuckeyes.
November 24th, 2010 at 9:38 AM ^
We need a defense that morphs on command, when we play a spread team like Oregon we need the twinkle toe little guys who can play in space and then when power team come to town the d-coordinator twitches his nose and we put in the 380 avg weight defense. Best of both worlds!
We made our mistake when we hired hair instead of a pixie nose. Must be RichRods fault.
Come on people and grow up, the spread is here to stay and we need to learn to play in space to stop losing to the likes of App State. Scheme is not the answer, experiance, strength and talent are.
November 24th, 2010 at 10:23 AM ^
This isn't the Big East where it has predominantly spread teams. It is the Big 10, where power football is what wins Big 10 Championships here. Rich is recruiting as if it is still the Big East. fact.
Here is the conference records as of today. All of the power teams are on top, and the spread times rest below on the bottom.
Their is a reason for that, because this conference is based on power, not finesse.
That is why we see so many injuries with these teams, not because they are young, it because they are getting pounded each and every week.

Brandon: We are going to run a 4-3 or a 3-4 next year
Rich Rod: No 3-3-5
Brandon: You are not listening, 4-3 or 3-4
Rich Rod: I am 3-3-5
Brandon: Welcome back, Jim
Harbaugh: It has been too long!

I think we are all trying to second guess David Brandon. The University of Michigan hasn't had such a hands-on type of AD since Don Canham. Brandon is at practices, film study, does interviews with the players, he wants to know what is going on. Remember, this is the guy who took a good thing (Domino's Pizza) and tinkered with it to make it better.
I don't see any test kitchens being built to test out new defensive schemes, but I can guarantee you that the program WILL be tinkered with in some way minute the regular season ends. It makes no sense to replace a DC now unless you plan on keeping your head coach. Otherwise, any new HC would want to hire his own DC. If GERG goes before the bowl game but is not immediately replaced, then I am inclined to think there will be a bigger shake-up. If GERG stays through the bowl game, I think the changes to the coaching personnel will be minor.
Just my 2 cents
