poor taste

It would be if they had all died. Since they didn't, I think it's pretty funny...
Also: They wouldn't be afraid of getting shafted by the administration.
One problem, they only fill holes by accident, so I think they'd have a hard time teaching our linebackers to do it on purpose.

maybe mine wasn't funny enough, but if it inspires responses like this then it's worth it.
Very funny!

keep digging yourself into a hole buddy

Agreed. I'd say hire them to teach our offensive line to create holes, but we're pretty adept at doing that already.

Thats not even cool to joke about
November 23rd, 2010 at 9:46 AM ^
You realize they're all alive and well, right? And appearing on Letterman, etc? It's a feel-good story of survival, not a tragedy.
The Michigan defense, now that's a tragedy.

your attempt at humor has failed miserably

Don't have an issue with the context, just wasn't funny.

Haha what a great idea!! This is totally better than GERG and his hairy beaver (that's what she said).

Hang on one second, how is it in poor taste? didn't they all survive? I don't think the joke is particularly funny, I just don't think it was a tragedy where folks need to have the "too soon" reaction.
Was it in poor taste for people to dress up as them for halloween?
November 23rd, 2010 at 9:30 AM ^
it's not really in poor taste, it's just......not funny.
November 23rd, 2010 at 9:33 AM ^
I think the politically correct police (PCP) need to calm down a little bit. Especially with the "Oh my gosh I am soooo offended I have never heard anything so rash in all my years blah blah blah"....

You said it, creepy naked mustache man.

Does the Chilean Miner come from the Michigan coaching tree? If not, NO DEAL.
November 23rd, 2010 at 9:36 AM ^
But Yost was from West Virginia, so he must have had some miner's blood in him. All miners are related, right?
November 23rd, 2010 at 9:42 AM ^
Well... Rodriguez is a hispanic name after all.

Not in poor taste, just not very funny. If you're going to clutter up the board with inane nonsense that has no real value other than giving your fingers something to do, it had better be uproariously funny to at least 30% of people.

I agree that joking about the Michigan defense is in poor taste

workers for the secondary.
They been trained to go in low and use their hands well.

I'm not sure that recruits would warm up to their training methods, though.

AARRRGGHHH RABBLE RABBLE THE LAST (SON OF A) COAL MINER WE HIRED ONLY KNOWS HOW TO COACH OFFENSE NOT DEFENSE RABBLE RABBLE.
November 23rd, 2010 at 9:52 AM ^
I don't care about whether it was in poor taste or not, it was just stupid. I'm sure I'll get negged like every other dissenting opinion in this thread but this is not worthy of a new thread.
November 23rd, 2010 at 9:56 AM ^
OH! NO!!.... it looks like someone may get Pelini....ed.

On MGoBlog? When did this start happening?

The miners survived, just finished a US tour, and will all make plenty of money. Their story is almost a fairy tale ending. So, I don't think joking about them is all that bad, but the subject is probably more suited to a serious metaphor than a trite attempt at a joke. I can easily imagine a few football coaches using them in motivational speeches down the road.
Ultimately, I just don't think it's funny. It's like, "how many different ways can we find to bitch about the defense?" It might be sorta funny in a bar if everyone was drunk, but I definitely agree that it wasn't worth yet another "the defense really sucks" thread.

You seriously want to use a life-threatening and dire situation as an ACTUAL metaphor for a football team that struggles in pass coverage? How precisely would that go?
"You remember how those Chilean miners survived for months underground with little food and water? Staving off starvation, madness, and despair as they struggled for their very lives? Do you? Good. Now maintain zone discipline, and watch the wheel route."
November 23rd, 2010 at 10:16 AM ^
several Chilean miners with some very respectable mustaches. That is enough to let me hear their defensive proposals by all means.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:44 AM ^
"We're a pretty glass-is-half-full group... but seriously, we think the prospects for Michigan's defense are pretty grim."
