It would be if they had all died. Since they didn't, I think it's pretty funny...

Also: They wouldn't be afraid of getting shafted by the administration.

One problem, they only fill holes by accident, so I think they'd have a hard time teaching our linebackers to do it on purpose.

Hang on one second, how is it in poor taste? didn't they all survive?  I don't think the joke is particularly funny, I just don't think it was a tragedy where folks need to have the "too soon" reaction.

Was it in poor taste for people to dress up as them for halloween?

I think the politically correct police (PCP) need to calm down a little bit.  Especially with the "Oh my gosh I am soooo offended I have never heard anything so rash in all my years blah blah blah"....

Not in poor taste, just not very funny. If you're going to clutter up the board with inane nonsense that has no real value other than giving your fingers something to do, it had better be uproariously funny to at least 30% of people.

I don't care about whether it was in poor taste or not, it was just stupid. I'm sure I'll get negged like every other dissenting opinion in this thread but this is not worthy of a new thread.

The miners survived, just finished a US tour, and will all make plenty of money.  Their story is almost a fairy tale ending.  So, I don't think joking about them is all that bad, but the subject is probably more suited to a serious metaphor than a trite attempt at a joke.  I can easily imagine a few football coaches using them in motivational speeches down the road.

Ultimately, I just don't think it's funny.  It's like, "how many different ways can we find to bitch about the defense?"  It might be sorta funny in a bar if everyone was drunk, but I definitely agree that it wasn't worth yet another "the defense really sucks" thread.

You seriously want to use a life-threatening and dire situation as an ACTUAL metaphor for a football team that struggles in pass coverage?  How precisely would that go?

"You remember how those Chilean miners survived for months underground with little food and water? Staving off starvation, madness, and despair as they struggled for their very lives?  Do you?  Good. Now maintain zone discipline, and watch the wheel route."
