OT: How Canadiens view Detroit - Red Wing article in Edmonton Sun

Submitted by Search4Meaning on

When an article starts like this, it just has to make your day:

"DETROIT — Welcome to Detroit, where the forecast, as always, is muggy, with a chance of murder.

When you’re trying to breathe a little life back into your year, this is not the place to visit. And not just because they use more white chalk at crime scenes than they ever did in the schools."

Wow!  Thanks Robert Tychowski of the Edmonton Sun for that upbeat start.

ESPN's power rankings aren't worth the paper they are written on in terms of predicting Cup favorites.  They are solely reflective of how teams are playing right now, not who is favored to win the Cup.  If you have names (and links to the articles) of actual experts who picked them to win it this year, I'd be glad to take a look at that, because I don't recall seeing any make that prediction preseason and have seen very few deviate from that prediction over the first month of the season.  Detroit has had a strong start to the season record-wise, but they haven't played the strongest of competition so far this year.  Only four of their wins have come against teams currently currently in playoff positions (yes, I realize it's early, but my point is that I wouldn't get ahead of yourself in thinking that they've been world beaters this season).  I realize that my opinion on this is sure to be unpopular here, but I'm just stating it as I see it and I'd temper my expectations on how good they are this year until they play (and beat) the better teams in the league, if I were in your shoes.

oh and they have beaten Anaheim twice and the only time they have played Chicago they have won.

Yeah, I know, but that's essentially their three quality wins of the season.  They have also beaten Phoenix (twice) (13th), Calgary (twice) (14th), Nashville (12th), and Edmonton (twice) (15th).  All I'm saying is that I wouldn't get my hopes up on this season just yet when seven of your ten wins are against those teams.

And while I can see what you are saying, the way you worded it made it sound like there was no way they would win the cup this year.

No, that's not at all what I was saying.  I was just saying that they aren't the favorite to win the Cup this year.  Thanks for the article, I hadn't seen that one.

Alright guy, you're crossing the line here. Some jackass in Edmonton (with the Alberta inferiority complex in full effect) pisses you off about the blessed Red Wings fine but don't be pissing on my nation and especially not on our Remembrance Day.

Oh Canada, I stand on guard, for thee.

So why is there any bashing of either country than? Why can't people just say "Oiler Fans" instead of incriminating an entire nation.

We love our country of Canada, and you guys obviously love yours. I'm sure you would be rather upset of someone came on here and said, "Fuck the USA." Do you think we would enjoy seeing "Fuck Canada"? Please just have some consideration for your fellow man, as we share the same continent.

This board is better than this, we are here to talk about the UofM. We don't need to waste this much time on a useless journalist who wrote a very inconciderate article.

I was absolutely aware that it was Veterans Day in the United States and as the previous poster has indicated it would surely piss off the board (in most of it's entirety) if someone were to make such ridiculous remarks about the United States and particularly on such a patriotic and important date.

That sort of thing about Canada...on Remembrance Day especially...not on my watch.

Damn King, that's quite the avatar.

Anyway, I agree that the guy shouldn't have taken such a ridiculous shot at Detroit...well, repeated it seems. That said, the "blame Canada" meme in response, on our national day of mourning (and yours) was distasteful to me and I expressed the same. Feel free to crap on that writer (who is clearly uninformed about Detroit and likely Michigan more generally) and to a lesser degree on the paper and fanbase that support that sort of garbage journalism but the inclusion of our entire nation...I would all caps unacceptable on that.

It's not just in Canada, even more so in this country. Whenever Detroit teams win a Championship, or are in the playoffs... somebody always writes something about rust belt, unemployment, fires, looting, and murder.

When the Lakers won the title this past season. Riots broke out, and there was talk about canceling the parade. This barely made a ripple with the MSM. You would have thought the freep was covering the story. If it had been Detroit, the story nationally would have been... "Murder Capital wins Championship. Rioters cheer as City burns."

It's just how things are. If you consider yourself a Detroiter, it's nothing we haven't seen or heard before. Just shrug and move on. It's lazy journalism, which we are accustomed to around here.

And what's funny is that there hasn't been a sports riot in Detroit since the late 90's.  All of the Wings Championships have been very well behaved and so were the recent Piston championships.  But hey, since when do journalists let facts get in the way of their prejudices?

Quick question. Hasn't Detroit somewhat earned this reputation? I mean it did not just come out of nowhere, did it?

I realize the reputation has been exaggerated a great deal. I am just asking whether there is some truth to it. I am a West Michigan native who is not all that familiar with the Detroit area.

You could certainly make an argument about the degree to which Detroit has or hasn't earned its reputation.  I think that's missing the point though.

It's kind of like saying that some kids really do deserve to get bullied.  Yeah you know what, some kids really do.   Good social skills is an important part of growing up and having success in life.  You and I both know though that bullying can go too far.

The point is that Detroit has great places and great stories that never get reported.  Places like the DIA, the Zoo, the Fox, the Whitney.  Not to mention all of these places.  Detroit also has a lot of good people (in both downtown and the burbs), who've had a lot of bad happen.  The real problem is that the longer Detroit's reputation burns, the greater chance we have of losing the great things that are still there, and the longer it will be before economic recovery.

Was this really a required OT post? I mean c'mon man. What you are saying is almost as bad as what he is. Not all "Canadiens" hate or have a distaste for detroit, nor do they have the same view. Don't be so quick to paint with a broad brush while using such shitty paint. Just because one idiot decides to spew chunks all over a page, does not mean he is the voice of a nation.

As a Canadian I am appauled by that article; however,  I was not really suprized when I saw who it came from. Due to it's third grade style journalism, not only is it frownd uppon to read that usless disguise of a "newspaper", but those who do are often ridiculed. What does edmonton have?... a mall? That's about it.

That article is complete garbage, it's almost funny.  It's written for the Wings-Oilers game tonight, and the intro the original post provided is completely unrelated to the rest of the story/preview- the article could just as easily start with the next sentence: "The Wings are good."  A true sign of shoddy journalism when you can't tie in your opening sentence to the rest of the piece.  What a jabroni.

I mean, whatever, really. I'm from the Detroit area and spend plenty of time in Detroit. Yeah, there are bad parts, and there are good parts. Whatever. I don't think ths journalist really believes what he wrote and if he does he's an idiot and there's not really much to it. The phrase "muggy with a chance or murder" is actually pretty funny.

Detroit's violent crime rate is ridiculous and the education system is corrupt and awful and frankly if these things are used for humor then that's fine, they're ripe for it. Hopefully the education system will finally get better with the changes being made.
