META - Locking Football threads?

Submitted by His Dudeness on

Sorry if this comes at a bad time, but I am just wondering what the deal is with locking all of the threads lately. Locking a MSU football thread on a MIchigan sports blog? Deleting a Halloween costume blog when this weekend is Halloween? I can understand deleting dupes or trolls, etc. but we can't vent poetic about MSU looking terrible? Really?

considering the fact it's ridiculous that threads are being created mocking MSU when they're 8-1, beat Michigan in Ann Arbor 34-17 and have beaten a team Michigan will truly struggle with (Wisconsin), i think it's beyond stupid to have a post dedicated to "lulz, exposed, karma, lulz"

maybe that's just me... oh wait, it's not.

The locked thread was about MSU being exposed. as not true national title contenders.  I don't think the purpose of the thread (or the majority of the comments) are stating that MSU isn't a good team.  While they are a good team this year, they are clearly not a national championship team (my opinion comes from watching most of their games this year, not simply the Iowa game).  Therefore, it actually seems a fairly accurate statement to say that they were finally exposed this week and the thread wasn't that outrageous, no matter how much you disagree.

No offense dude, but I think you get a little too crazy with the locks and the thread rips. It's not a jailhouse. It's a fun blog. I'm wearing a dress, earings, a nice necklace and heels right now. It's going to be ok.

While I agree with your sentiment that it's probably not best to be crowing about a MSU loss after they beat us, I'm still happy about it.  I've never been someone to go rub a loss in opponent fans' faces.  I like to focus on my own team and be done with it.

That being said, I don't see how that means it should be deleted.  First off, Brian writes TWIS every week to do the exact same thing that the thread did: enjoy someone else's misery.  Secondly, it was a thread about another Big Ten team, and a rival to boot, thus it was on topic.  But, it was probably redundant given that there was already a afternoon game thread.

I really appreciate the work the mods do to keep the board in check, and I like the policies in place.  You guys do a great job.

But seriously, I really don't see the problem with the costume thread.  Its one thread about halloween costumes on halloween, and I think you guys might be going a bit overboard on this one.

Is talking about MSU getting exposed any different than assuming we will "truly struggle" against a team we play against in several weeks?

Just wondering.

Really?  One thread gets locked and you have to make a "Why did it get locked" thread?

There's an "Afternoon games" discussion thread.  That is where afternoon games get discussed.

And yes, let's not puff our chests when a team who beat us soundly loses a road game to another team who beat us soundly.

Smile that they lost, and Dantonio got what he deserves.  No need to be a poor sport.  Let's focus our energy on the game that Michigan is yet to play tonight.

Time to get Denarded....

Someone asked...what was the point of the last thead...the Schaedenfruede MSU Thread....

I think the point was....MSU has peaked, and now the Sparty / Dantonio shame spiral begins.  Their program will return to status quo mediocrity.  Congrats on peaking at #5 BCS Sparty, and running convicts onto the field.  It will be ok though, because Dantonio is a moral man with religious values....

I don't disagree that the loss exposed them.  And I don't really expect them to stay a good team for long after this year.  I do think it's a bit premature to say that one loss is going to destroy the program.  And how is winning their next three games after this spiralling to mediocrity?

Yep.  Agree.

College sports is on topic, is it not?

As for the Halloween thread....  I understand the mods have been asked to maintain certain standards.  But come on.  It's not like people are posting about what they're favorite christmas songs are.  It's Halloween this weekend, so, we can't have one thread about it??  I understand the desire to not get OT stuff get wildly out of hand in-season.  BUT, OT threads help build community.  We can't talk about football *all* the time, so, why can't a thread like the halloween one be allowed?

I agree with the general sentiment. I am generally in favor of what the mods do but lately it seems the board can't even have fun anymore. It's not like there is much to talk about that is on-topic that won't devolve into a "fire/don't fire" argument. I know this isn't reddit but can't there be at least a little leeway if the topic in question is funny/temporally relevant/generating good discussion?
