Tom Harmon - Upcoming Big Ten Icon?

Submitted by True Blue in CO on

This great historical piece came out this morning from LS&A and the Bentley Library on Tom Harmon.

Maybe one of our more talented MGoBlogmates can do a UFR on the attempted tackle made by the Cal fan.

Have to believe Harmon will be one of the upcoming Big Ten Icons on the BTN in the coming weeks.

That was a joke, although only to me. No volleyball athlete of either gender belongs on an icon list--because icons mean that they are bigger than their sport, known by sports fans, and those play for the sports that people pay attention to. If it was an best athletes list, maybe. Well check that. Since the best athletes in college play football and basketball no.

That drunk guy cracked me up. Old 98 tore it up back in the day and I would expect him to be in the top 3 also. Great sense of humor and a hard working man that received recognition on and off the field, how could he not be be within the top 3 BTN Icons?

His stats in the 1940 Ohio State game always sound crazy.  I believe it was:

151 yards Passing with 2 TD

139 yards Rushing with 2 TD

3 Interceptions, one returned for a TD

4 kicked extra points

50 yards per punt

Didn't he return punts too?

The Guy didn't sit on the Sideline!

I would guess Jesse Owens would be #1

Magic Johnson, Red Grange, Dick Butkus, Nile Kinnick, Isiah Thomas.....

All should be up there if they haven't already been mentioned.

I'm sure Harmon will be feaured, but top 3 seems doubtful to me.

You mean a female track athlete or cross country runner shouldn't have been ahead of Charles Woodson???

Not trying to downgrade womens athletics but the list is somewhat of a joke.

Harmon needs to be on there just for achieving the impossible - receiving a standing ovation from Buckeye fans after his monster game in 1940.
