Steven Threet to Transfer
Hi. I'm back, and tired, and it's 3:30 AM but I've already slept seven hours today so, like, hi.
The Daily has confirmed the rampant internet rumor that Steven Threet was planning on a transfer:
"I have decided to transfer from the University of Michigan," Threet wrote in the statement. "I have requested and received my release. I do not yet know where I will continue my collegiate career, and have no further comment until that decision is made."
This is obviously not good for anything except my prediction that Tate Forcier would be the opening-day starter. For all Threet's faults he looked competent at times last year and could have been passable as a sophomore; Michigan is basically down to the two freshmen and then it's time to close your eyes, pick a walk-on, and pray.
So, yeah. Hooray for good news immediately upon returning.

And Brian- What was the ransom? It only took us 6 days to come up with the money, sorry we couldn't find any big donors sooner! While you were being held, did they make you watch the looped Toledo game? Now that is some Branch Davidian type torture there.

Brian, indeed you should never leave again, everything went to shit while you were gone. There were these posts from this army, and they were pretty cool, but for some reason it seemed like the world was against them, and there were unicorns, and a little kid (I think) posting anything that came to his mind, and you were kidnapped, and we actually beat OSU this past year, and we lost to two top ten teams in basketball, and everyone panicked that we have too many WRs for next year's recruiting class... and now this.

What's the O/U on how many times this kid transfers for his career? He's up to three schools now and he's barely a sophomore yet in eligibility? (Yes, I know he's likely to transfer to FCS so he doesn't have to sit out another year.).

OMG--a student doing what is best for himself!
He is not an idiot. I hope he does well anywhere he lands. He didn't badmouth UM. He gave it everything he had while he was here and he didn't string anyone along.

I realize the arguments for one year of experience and all that, BUT, the coaches can now work to install their system, without bumbling around trying to keep Threet happy. This means that Forcier and Denard will be taking all the snaps with the first team to get their timing in place.
This is a good thing.

I'm betting Threet didn't want to work his ass off to be 2nd/3rd string this year and watch his place on the depth chart slowly drip down year by year.

Once Forcier gets injured (and he WILL), we discover that Denard can't hit the broad side of a barn, and Sheridammit trots back into a game, many are going to question RR's inability to BS these kids into hanging in there.
Too many goddamn transfers. I've never seen it like this at Michigan.

You've also never seen a drastic coaching change like this. Fortunately your comment on Denard is baseless as scouts tend to like his throwing ability. Their their main concern is his height. Which happens to be less of a factor in the spread offense.

I see Threet taking a long look at what Pat Devlin just did in transfering from PSU to Delaware. It does not make sense for him to sit out another year at this point.

I just don't consider this bad news. If M is gonna be successful, one of the two freshman will be starting by mid-season. That means at best, Threet was a caretaker for the first few games, some of which we'd lose regardless of who is standing behind center.
If you are Threet, this really is the only decision. You're looking at starting five or six games for the the rest of your college career (if neither of the freshmen work out this year, RR just grabs another duel threat next year).

Seconded. The general consensus was that one of the freshmen would be taking over by midseason anyway. In the very short run, it could cost us a game or two early. After that point, his departure most likely affects only depth (as he would probably end up at third-string fairly quickly). I just hope that we can spare the game-or-two margin that we might give up.
I give Threet credit for his toughness and refusal to quit, but I am fairly certain that either of the freshmen can overthrow open receivers as effectively as Threet did.
On the upside, Tate and Denard will be getting more first-team experience, which will hopefully accelerate their development (even if only marginally).

Good luck to you Threet. I don't know if you visit this site, but if you do I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you. Last year was the worst year in UM history, and we all know about all of that but let's face facts. It could have been worse without you. You were great against Wisc. and several other games you rally shined. I understand you leaving but I am sad to see you go. Best of luck to you wherever you go.

He didn't even complete 50 percent of his passes.
I'm pretty certain Tate or Denard can do that, and they can run, which Steven certainly could not.
It's time to get the QB in there that Rich Rod wants, not the one that makes the fanbase content because he has a year of (underperforming) experience.
Honestly, we all bash Sheridan here, but at least Sheridan ran a great game in the team's best performance of the season against Minnesota.

I am not so sure that the battle for the #1 spot will be over after spring ball. No, this is not some crazy attempt to rationalize more playing time for Nick Sheridan, but I think that Denard Robinson gets a lot of playing time in summer camp and this one might surprise you.
Watching Robinson's film, I was impressed with his footwork and his discipline to get into a proper throwing motion in the pocket. He's got quick feet and quickly re-establishes his base, turns his shoulders square to his target and gets the ball out quickly. He's got a high natural release point and the ball really comes off of his hand well(doesn't throw tail draggers or wounded ducks). I am not even looking at his running ability, because it was sick. He's a fast and elusive guy, but I was more impressed with his mechanics as a QB. I don't know how their HS numbers compare, but as a rule you take all HS stats with a grain of salt as there are many factors that can affect the stats, but the film don't lie.
I think if Robinson can get in and learn enough of the offense in the summer, gets some snaps in the first 4 games or so, I think he gets some starts by the midpoint of the season. Tate will have 19 practices and the spring game under his belt before Robinson arrives, but I think we'll have a pretty nice QB battle in August, which is a good thing. Nothing against Nick, but we'll be better off this year if he's holding the clipboard insomuch as our #1 and #2 will be on the field.

I watched Denard's on YouTube and saw that the majority of his highlights were him making great throws. That is extremely exciting considering that, oh by the way, he also runs a (fake?) 4.38 forty.
And I saw Tate live this season when Scripps played Mira Mesa. Tate may be more accurate but based on a rough comparison to Denard's YouTube stuff, I think Denard has a stronger arm.
Absolutely the QB position will be green again this year but at least these are the types of QB's that RR and Magee can optimize their offense around.

I wish Threet nothing but the best. He played with a lot of heart last year, and I'll never forget the epic comeback against Wisconsin. I can't wait to see how the press manipulates this one to their liking.

.Wisconsin comeback. Bielema went into "turtle" mode, Minor had a good run, Threet had one good pass, one good zone read fake (and got run down), and Thompson caught an easy TAINT. The rest of that game, Threet was unbelievably brutal.
Unbelievable heart = completion rate under 50%, would not have started last year if Pryor or the hypothetical spread QB was there, stopped running after 3 games, couldn't throw a screen pass.
Why would we want him to transition? Let's just all move on - it's better in relationships and it's better here. Threet won't have to play waiting for the bench next year, and Tate and Denard know they have it all to play for from day one, which is what they both want.

I understand why Threet left, and I can't fault him for it. Selfishly I wish he would have stayed for the betterment of the program and to get his degree from a great institution. And if he were a junior? Or maybe even a sophomore? He probably does stay. But he's got 3 years of eligibility left and would have spent two of them holding a clip board at Michigan. He saw what the Coner does, didn't like it, and decided to go elsewhere.
That being said, anyone who downplays this as insignificant is missing the big picture. Experience is part of it since Threet is the only useful QB on the roster to have taken a snap or a hit. But the big problem is depth. We're sitting at two scholarship QB's - both of whom are freshman. NOT GOOD. It is especially not good when you subject your QB's to hits more often than a pro-style offense would.
I think it is safe to say that you'll see the Florida approach to QB this season as both Denard and Tate see regular action, perhaps even on the field at the same time.
I also think you immediately move Feagin back to QB as Sheridan insurance. (In case of Sheridan sighting, break glass.) Feagin is never going to crack the lineup at slot WR with Odoms, Robinson, and Gallon around. Make him a QB and hope he doesn't transfer too. Let him play special teams if you want, but he should be the #3/4 QB this season.
