Those announcers were dumb. There was nothing wrong with Spurrier calling that timeout. The clock was stopped, it was 1st and 10 at the 20 with 11 seconds left. Your options are:
- Run a play to the endzone and leave time for the field goal.
- Run any play and hold on to your timeout in case it is short and the clock runs.
- Run a running play to line up the FG, call TO, and kick it.
So they chose option one. If you choose that option, why not call a timeout and draw up a play that assures you a shot at a TD and leaves time for a FG? They just didn't execute.
