Inside the Numbers: MSU-Michigan

Submitted by InRodWeTrust333 on

Interesting article by Dave Revsine of Big Ten Network on some stats for this week in the Big Ten. All teams are included but I will just put down a review of what was written about Michigan and MSU. I'll post the link at the bottom for those that want to see all of the teams stats.

Michigan

  • Last weeks offense put up yards quick, but wow. 574 yards in 1,093 seconds, thats 1 yard every 1.9 seconds! Perhaps a new nickname similar to point a minute, yard a second?
  • Denard has more total yards than 34 teams, with 1,913. Some teams on that list: Texas, LSU, Florida.
  • As you all know by now, first to get 200/200 in two games.
  • Michigan had 12.8 yards per play last week.
  • Another one most of you know, 8 td drives of less than a minute this year

Michigan State

  • Last time they beat Michigan 3 straight times was 1965-67 when Bo was still at Miami of Ohio
  • Since last season Sparty is 8-0 when winning the time of possession, 3-7 when losing it. That stat doesn't seem to have much relevance against Michigan though.

I have no doubt that Sparty will try and run the ball, and the clock, all day Saturday.  They want a snooze fest.  Their 8 minute drive to close out Wisconsin has the experts picking State.  I like Denard and the O to score on more than 50% of their total drives in this game for the win.

Le'veon Bell is a beast who is gonna do damage in the big ten for awhile not to mention Caper and Baker sitting in their backfield... it will be a true test of our run D this saturday

Those stats are very telling. In most of the games between these two teams, the team with the most rushing yards wins. I like our chances. I agree with the above poster in that MSU will try to focus on TOP and that would play right to our hands. That stat is incredibly overrated, but it's great for us if the other teams still want to use it.

This game goes to blue, because our D will step up, just like they did against OSU last year and Our O won't miss a beat to put little bro back in his place! so they can have the TOP

tUOS is OSU

Hopefully the crowd gets involved more unlike umass and BGSU. With the addition of the big house, i think we now have a 12th man defender. Our D will be pumped up, not saying we will shut em down but they will be better than prior weeks.

that RR has a plan for this game that involves a number of things on both sides of the ball that we haven't seen yet this year. He knows how important this game is to the program and to himself personally. I just pray that it doesn't come down to a FG because I'm not sure there's a plan for that.

I would like to invent a new stat for this unique situation. High flying O, really bad D. Makes the TOP stats obsolete, correct? So this is the "Expected points per game vs. opponents D" Ave. points per posession/(opponents points against defense/strength of schedule). This will predict how many points the offense will score, while taking into account the difficulty of schedule of the opposing D. I don't have time to crunch the numbers, but I bet it woud give a better idea of who wins the game.

8 drives of less than a minute?  I started a Campus Legend in NCAA with Denard when he first came here, and it's safe to say that he is currently putting up BETTER numbers than I did.  In a video game.  On Varsity level (I always play on Heisman but I wanted to see what kind of gaudy numbers I could put up with him.)

I keep going back to Turnover margin.....

This game will be decided by turnover margin.  If Michigan wins (or at least breaks even) the turnover battle, they win this game.

If you give Michigan extra drives / opportunities, you are asking to get pounded....

That game is going to be battle so I hope you can beat them in Ann Arbor this Saturday! I'm pulling for you although some of my friends are rooting for MSU. (I know they're dicks) Poor Kansas State but they never really stood a chance in that one tonight lol.
