I was thinking the exact same thing, what the hell?? Whoever is in the marketing department for CollegeFootballStore.com is wayyyy off on their key demographic information.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:46 PM ^
I thought that it might have something to do with the fact that I am in Cleveland, but I don't know how well they can tailor ads based on location.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
... is advanced, I will discourage you from looking under the hood. You can be targeting on a lot more personal information and behaviors than that.
October 5th, 2010 at 6:04 PM ^
Yep, absolutely... location tracking via IP is wayyyy old... new methods that rely on cookies, etc are much more advance so whatever marking company has a pretty clear picture of where you live, websites you visit, what you buy, etc (maybe maybe not name)
October 5th, 2010 at 6:41 PM ^
lol @ your avatar, what cartoon was that from? I seem to remember it somewhere....
October 5th, 2010 at 4:49 PM ^
I had the same initial reaction. But, if you think about it, where would you expect to see Buckeye fans? A buckeye blog, for sure. But, there are plenty of Buckeye fans that either come here to troll or who come here to read about their biggest rival. Also, while the overwhelming majority of our fanbase hates OSU, there are some M fans that are just fans of the B10.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:02 PM ^
I'm sure it's more Google than CollegeFootballStore.com. I don't think their algorithms factor in rivalries ... college football is college football.
Click on it anyway. Makes Brian money.

That's how you get herpes.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:15 PM ^
You noticed it, didn't you? Mission accomplished for them.
October 5th, 2010 at 8:22 PM ^
Doesn't really do the store any good if people notice the ad, throw up in their mouths, and then carefully avoid looking at it again.
October 5th, 2010 at 6:11 PM ^
I live in detroit and im getting that stupid o$u banner. it must be either an o$u grad or a msu grad that did that.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:47 PM ^
maybe they're targeting the trolls.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:50 PM ^
This week, the trolls are of a green and white persuasion. Not quite as stupid as the OSU trolls, but annoying nonetheless.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:48 PM ^
There are Jon Runyan ads running over on MSU blog sites, so it's probably a keyword thing or something that causes these ads to pop up. Either way, maybe this is more money in the pockets of the UM alumni that started Google.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:48 PM ^
Please make it MGoaway......
October 5th, 2010 at 4:49 PM ^
I'll spare you the screenshot, but from time to time I read mgoblog on my wife's laptop. It's fairly disconcerting to be reading about football while being served ads for maternity clothes.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:09 PM ^
Soma Intimates - Classy lingerie
(To the trolls: yes, I'm married, see my picture where I'm holding my kid?)
October 5th, 2010 at 10:17 PM ^
I'm not sure that I'd trade, I get victoria's secret on mine...
October 5th, 2010 at 5:16 PM ^
Viewing photos of pregnant women while reading MGoBlog? Mmmmmm . . . Boy, would I like to get me some of that!
October 5th, 2010 at 6:18 PM ^
This is similar to how when I read the site at work, I get the normal ads, but when I go to this site at home, I get a bunch of ads for porn and Russian brides. Hm.
October 5th, 2010 at 8:19 PM ^
being hit with a condom ad when you're snipped.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:58 PM ^
I thought I was seeing double, but I guess it is just coincidence.
I usually see Muscle Milk adds with USC and UCLA logos on them.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:54 PM ^
This banner ad only comes up on threads with OSU or Ohio State in the title. Not a big conspiracy. I'm sure its a similar incident to the "Get a Wolverine in Office" ads on the MSU blogs.
I wanted to post about it too, but alas, not enough MGoPoints.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:55 PM ^
Apparently the "ad block" extension on Google Chrome works really well, because I don't get any of this. Can't say that I mind though...
October 5th, 2010 at 5:05 PM ^
odd that Google Chrome blocks ads from Google.
At least the ads on mgoblog don't pop out and dance in front of you... and Brian has to earn a living.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:57 PM ^
It's likely because of words that are used on the board. 'Ohio State' and 'Buckeyes' being pretty common.
I feel for Brian though, those ads won't generate much for click-throughs.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:59 PM ^
I have also seen Notre Dame ads on the blog in the past as well.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:03 PM ^
There was a sparty one earlier.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:16 PM ^
This ad just popped up on the side for this thread, lined up almost perfectly with the picture of the ad in the OP. I hadn't seen it until now... see what you've done.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:16 PM ^
I thought you were going to refer to the "Asian Singles" banner that was atop the MGoBlog site. I can only assume it was there because of his recent post.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:17 PM ^
Right now it's Penn State.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:29 PM ^
Lately, 90% of the ads for me have been for weed vaporizers. Does anyone else get mostly "Got Vape" ads?
October 5th, 2010 at 5:32 PM ^
are ExtenZe ads.
no wait
October 5th, 2010 at 10:58 PM ^
and freaked out. Thought this site had been infiltrated by some bucknuts. Guess that's the beauty of google ad words
October 5th, 2010 at 9:41 PM ^
they don't even offer a buckstache t-shirt, weak selection.
October 5th, 2010 at 10:37 PM ^
I have one next to the one in the thread its weird. and i hate seeing one ohio state thing let alone two
October 5th, 2010 at 10:37 PM ^
What's especially funny is I live in cleveland and got none of the OSU ads.
Or the delicious department store cookies.....
October 6th, 2010 at 6:54 AM ^
What banner ads?
Ad-Block Plus :)
