The Vagaries of the Polls

Submitted by Enjoy Life on

So, the polls have not come out yet but it will be very interesting.

Most of the polls either discount or downright ignore FCS games so last week's close game against UMass was basically a non-entity. But, the blowout this week of an even weaker FBS team will have a dramatic effect on rankings, sos, etc.

Good thing it did not happen in reverse (blowout against Umass and close game against BGSU).

Let's not get too wrapped up in the rankings right now. I doubt there will be that big of a change, if any, of our ranking, but I couldn't care less about that right now. Just win baby!

The polls, if anything, pay attention to continuing to win, victory margin, and the name of the team being ranked.  If a big name wins 12 games by 12 points, they'll be number 1.  Change the name to Hawaii, and they'll be about 9 (how'd that Sugar Bowl work out guys).

The polls are basically BS.

...as long as Michigan is in there somewhere.  The only time it really matters a lot anymore is if you are in the hunt for the title game or at least a BCS bowl.  As long as Michigan stays in the rankings this year, they will start next year in a good position.

As for that title game, wouldn't it be great if it ended up being TCU vs Boise State?  That would toss a little salad among the NCAA nabobs, and may generate serious discussion about a playoff.

OSU could lose to Michigan or Iowa this year.  Bama has shown that they aren't perfect, either.  If my concerns about Mallett's maturity and ability to react to a "punch in the mouth" with poise hadn't been valid, Bama could have easily lost today.  I'm guessing that at least Auburn gets them this year.

If everyone in the good conferences finds a way to lose, and TCU and BSU waltz through their crappy schedules undefeated, both schools would have a great case for playing in the title game.

I would be laughing at the ratings and making sure not to switch my cable box to the game.

Oops, actually, I was thinking more about the ANALYSIS than the actual poll data. My bad.

Do folks like The Mathlete exclude FCS data (I thought he did exclude FCS)?

If so, the way things worked out will be advantage M.
