Josh Furman

Submitted by Robokid on

I know this is pointless, but was wondering if anyone has herd about Josh Furman. I know he was a little under sized coming in, but with the depth problem I know we could use some speed out there. I know he'll most likely red shirt but would like to know whatever one else thinks.

He's a freak athlete (not really that undersized...well over 200 pounds and runs a 4.3) who came in even more raw than Denard. When Furman sees the field, he NEEDS to have his head on straight and have solid fundamentals because he's meant to be an impact player.

You could ask a question in a way that suggests that you expect a freshman to play right away.  You could also just ask if anyone knows anything about how a freshman is progressing.  Sometimes - not often, I grant - people on the board have some not-public information.

Saw him walking off the field after the win last weekend.  He's just a freshman, but I would love to know what the plan for him is.  Keep him at safety, or put Barwis weight on him and make him a linebacker?  I always get worried about guys like him, scares me that he'll be a great athlete without a real position, but it's still wayyy too early for that.

I didn't expect him to play at all this year.  All I said was I would love to know what the plan for him is.  It will be interesting to see if he's a safety with ridiculous size, or if he puts on weight like Mouton did.

How many posts do we have on people wondering if freshman are going to play. News flash: most are not that good right away. They need to grow a bit before they spread their wings and fly. Patience my friend.

I really like the idea of waiting a couple years on him so he can add weight to his frame and he can be a blazing fast WLB, but that prob requires him not seeing the field until 2012.

The coaches have never said anything to suggest that he's ready to play this year.  It seems safe to assume that they expect big things out of him, though, given his athleticism.  His is probably a redshit that they'll be reluctant to burn.

this has been a topic well discussed. furman came into michigan very raw. he was a linebacker in high school whose only responsibilities were to rush the passer and obviously help in run support. he had no pass coverage duties for the most part. its gonna take time before he develops into a viable option at lb. just because hes a freak athlete doesnt mean he wouldnt be a serious liability

Josh Furman doesn't have any experience in pass coverage, so he wasn't ready to play right away at safety.  He came in at only 207 lbs, which is small for a linebacker, plus we have experienced guys playing there now.

I hope we don't burn his redshirt on special teams.  If he comes in next fall around 220 or higher with 4 years of eligibility left, he has the physical tools to be a very good linebacker for us.

Given the previous comments regarding questions about freshmen playing, I take it that it would not be well received to ask if anyone thinks Brennen Beyer will start next year.
