Beaver and Newsome, good thing they went somewhere else
I'm drunk so go easy on me.
I was just thinking how fortunate we are to have Tate and Denard over the original duo that was Beaver and Newsome. There is no way that either Beaver or Newsome would have been as productive as Tate or Denard, unless our coaching staff is that awesome and can turn anyone into a stud, but think Sherithreet proved that it's not the case.
Now, why did Rich Rod recruit those two so heavily rather than focusing on Denard and Tate in the first place? Also, any chance that Richrod realized that Tate/Denard was a much better player that shavbeaver and decided to encourage them to decommit so that tate/denard would hop on board?
HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.

And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state.

That was one of the most enjoyable series of tangents ever seen. Thanks to each of you.

I helped my daddy build a bomb shelter in our basement because some fool parked a dozen warheads 90 miles off the coast of Florida. Well, this QB could park a coupla hundred warheads off Columbus and State College and no one would know anything about it till it was all over.

Now, understand, Commander, that torpedo did not self-destruct. You heard it hit the hull. And I...was never here.

It's time to play a game with our old adverrrrrserieeees: the American Navy.
September 23rd, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
We are 12-5-1 all-time vs. Navy, but Army leads their all-time series with us five wins to four. Let's schedule Army and at least move to .500 on them.

It all depends on the individual and the situation they are thrust into as a person and a player. There's absolutely no way to project how an 18 year old will react when introduced to a completely new environment, especially one as prestigious and scrutinized as the quarterback position at the University of Michigan. We will never know how much success or lack of success that Beaver or Newsome would have had at Michigan. Be happy with Denard and Tate and leave it at that.
September 23rd, 2010 at 3:11 AM ^
I'll bite my tongue on this one. Lets just say it's a bad sign when you start a thread with "I'm drunk."
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:04 AM ^
Ditto. In a similar vein, I've been told that any time you say something like "Hold my beer, watch this..." it's time to stop, and make sure what you're about to do is really that good of an idea.
September 23rd, 2010 at 11:20 AM ^
just let them do their thing just for pure entertainment and enjoyment in whatever they are trying to do. Believe me, I've done that to my friends except if they're endangering themselves or other people's lives, that is.

Not all decommitments are bad
September 23rd, 2010 at 5:58 AM ^
Maybe it's just my superstitious thinking, but players that were formally committed are normally off limits to me. However, I think that Beaver is good!!!

....Anthony Fera. Let's hope our kickers shake off the stage fright and start focusing only on kicking the crap outta the pig skin.
September 23rd, 2010 at 7:16 AM ^
Fera isn't even a kicker anymore. He's handling the punting duties for Penn State.
September 23rd, 2010 at 8:09 AM ^
To be technically douchey, Fera handles the punting AND Kick offs. Collins is handling the FG/PATs
September 23rd, 2010 at 7:56 AM ^
Yeah Brendan Gibbons was rated every bit as highly as Anthony Fera so it doesn't matter what their ranking was in high school. If Fera was such a good kicker he would've beaten out Penn State's walk-on kicker. I really wonder whether it is even worth it to give a kicker a scholarship to come to your school. It has not worked out very well with Michigan's last 2 scholarship kickers, Bryan Wright and Gibbons, and by giving them a scholarship to not even win the starting kicking job they are taking up a scholarship that could be used elsewhere. I think if you push your walk-on kicking program we can find enough kickers that are capable like Olesnavage and the like.
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:09 AM ^
Believe me. We have plenty of room for more scholarship players. Giving one or two to kickers isn't creating any sort of shortage elsewhere.
September 23rd, 2010 at 8:30 AM ^
It may look like stage fright, but I think it's more a case of the game being a lot faster in college than HS. A kicker doesn't have as much time to get a kick in the air in college as he does in HS, and he has to get a higher arc to get it over the line. In other words, the kick has to go higher and be executed faster; this takes a period of adjustment. Many kickers are naturally "wired" that way, but some have to develop it. Obviously, Michigan kickers are going to have to adjust.

Based on the content of your post I am surprised there are not more grammatical errors. So...well done?

You know the old adage ... hindsight is 20/15. But I just asked RR and he punched me in the face. After shaking off the strong urge to thank him, I mustered enough courage to ask why he did that. Know what he said? "It doesn't matter, it's in the past."
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:41 AM ^
willywill9: It still hurt
Rich Rodfiki: Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or... learn from it. (Rodfiki swings his fist at willywill9 again who ducks out of the way)

September 23rd, 2010 at 8:43 AM ^
high school player ratings have a lot to do with measurables and a player's "ceiling." Newsome and Beaver were rated higher Rivals, for instance, but they were 6'3" and Tate and Denard were 6'0". That theoretically lowers a QB's ceiling to these scouts, as you always hear the negative comments about shorter QBs. Hell, Drew Brees is what, 6'0-13/16" and he's doing fine for himself, but they're always talking about his height and having to find windows to throw through and such. I'm just glad the way it worked out, although back then, I was really excited at thought of chanting Beaver, Beaver at a UM game.
September 23rd, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
Was Newsome a 4* QB also?
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:19 AM ^
If either Newsome or Beaver stuck with us, I highly doubt that Denard commits here. He wanted a chance to play QB, right? I think Meyer would have won out if we had 2 QBs.
Ironically, Newsome decomitted because he didn't like the fact that he would have to compete with TATE. He looks pretty solid holding the clipboard for Bolden now.
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:21 AM ^
Well, McMurtry, hopefully, before long, you'll be able to chant Cox, Cox, Cox instead.

False. I believe he punched you in the face and while any sign of disrespect would amount to a barwis size beatdown, RR always says, "I only talk about players who play for michigan." This now makes me question the whole scenario.
