umass game atmosphere?

Submitted by preed1 on

I like to make the trip to a lot of home games but could not make it last week. Just a few questions about umass game experience.

1. How loud was the stadium compared to Uconn

2. What rawk songs were played and how often?

3. Did they announce slippery rock score?

4. What did people think of the pre game pump up video?

5. Any other video's played?

1. I'd say quieter, especially when things were looking iffy.

2. A bit of Journey, twice I think.  Everyone sang along to "Born and raised in South Detroit" of course.

3. Yes.

4. Fine.

5. Hockey, men and women's basketball, tribute to Ron Kramer.

1. idk, didn't go to uconn  2. sweet caroline, one or two others, but not nearly as many as last year.  btw band mic resulted in awful delay in student section, though still better than generic canned rawk at every break.  3.  showed it twice, announced it once.  problem:  it was last week's score because sr had a night game.  4.  the team--ok i guess.  linked on front page if you want to watch.  5. not that i recall

did i win?  EDIT:  doh

Other Chris answered your questions quite descriptively. Very moving tribute to Ron Kramer in my opinion.

I have to say I found the crowd in my section pretty disappointing (section name redacted). Anyway, crowd was *dead* until last minutes of the 2nd. Lots of ongoing throwing of hands into air and grumbling/bitching from fans informed by MSM who perceived UMass to be Baby Seal. Lots of middle aged guys yelling "wake up" and crapping on the 18 year olds who were taking bad angles in tackling but not responsible for the scheme.

So there was all that. Good times.

You must have been sitting where I was sitting.  There was a guy bitching after just about every defensive snap about how they were about 5 yards off.  I was thinking that he was bitching at the wrong people.  Seriously, I just hope this was a tuneup game.

that we were trailing through most of the first half.

Preceding posts have accurate answers to your specific questions.

As for UMass, there was quite a lot of legitimate interest.  Their O-line was huge, they didn't make many mistakes, and their tandem of tailbacks ran very well.  Good, smart runners.  Whole team handled very crisply by UMass coaching staff.

And the plays where we might have generated some real excitement (Gallon to run back punts, Hagerup punting from his own 45 with a chance to pin them deep, etc.) turned into disasters or near-disasters.

I have been to Toledo, App State, OSU, Oregon, Northwestern, and a dozen other horrifying losses, and the crowd after the game was as dead as I have ever seen it after a win.  When the team ran over to th student section, they just pretty much trotted over there and everyone was standing around.  There was silence and then a halfhearted singing of the Victors before the team left. I was standing in the concourse after the game on my phone and didn't even have to raise my voice to be heard on the other line... it was just so down afterwards. The UMass fans couldn't brag because they didn't win, and the Michigan fans were utterly deflated because, well, you saw it.

By the way, I am pretty sure the Slippery Rock is back to stay- I love seeing them bring back that old tradition.

Went to a family reunion sat and an old uncle was bsing with my son(who is a diehard nebraska fan) about slippery rock. MY son had no ideal.....Im 47 and couldnt remember  OMFG.  These coaches get paid alot, do i feel sorry for them nope. Are they all in over there head,  imo 97%. The other 3 understand it's all about MONEY.  Ask the MSU coach?? 'Was it worth it"

In terms of crowd noise, how can 113,000 fans not be an advantage each and every game. Quite Frankly, I don't think it is as big of an advantage as people think.

Umass has been in front of big crowds before (not 113000 big). The big crowds is not what is intimidating. It is loudness and rowdiness of big crowds.

This is the one thing that truly disappoints me about the general UM fanbase.

I know people frequently rant about this on this board, but I just do not understand it.

Will this ever get fixed and How can this get fixed?

I had to listen to some guy say over and over how much he hated RR and that he would give up pretty much anything to throw a water bottle at him...and he would be proud to go to jail over it...

Another guy say how RR couldn't keep Mallet and look how great he is now

Another guy say 'how about that Steven Tweet [sic]... wish RR would have kept him'

The guy behind me say that Denard should just kneel it before halftime because the team is weak. I actually responded to this one saying there is plenty of time to try for the endzone...Stonum TD on the next snap. He apologized for that one.

Thus, in terms of being around people in the stadium for atmosphere, this was by far the worst game I have ever attended. I am glad that is not where I sit each game because those people ruined my game day experience.

Forgot about that. No, this man had a shaved head and was rather large, like, 'hey move down there is not enough room [even though I am taking up two seats already]' large

Wait, that would be other universe twin...whoa.

Sorry - I can't start my own thread yet - however

Has there been any discussion about the play where Michigan tipped the ball, the UMASS player went out of bounds and then came back in bounds before he caught the ball?  I know the announcers said that it was ok because we tipped the ball but I don't like to rely on the announcing "experts" for rules.  I'm not sure that I see the difference between this situation and a receiver running out of bounds before he catches the ball.

Any thoughts?

Why is this clown not banned?  Seriously, this guy has done nothing but spam this board with dozens upon dozens of nearly incomprehensible posts.  It's absolutely annoying and I really can't see why he hasn't been banned.

was that the receiver jumped from out of bounds and caught the ball while landing in bounds.  Isn't the rule like basketball where you have to have two feet (or one) established inbounds before you can touch the ball?...... I am OK with the "tipped" ball ruling.  I am a little confused on how you start out of bounds and jump in the air, landing in bounds and that is a legal catch.  It just doesn't "feel" like that is a correct call to me....

is that there were a lot of not so regular customers in the big house.  If there's one game a season ticket holder would give up it was that one.  Even most of the student section was empty when the band took the field.

How the hell do you get excited for an FCS opponent? you don't, you watch the game and hope something stupid doesn't happen.

I get tired of people expecting an OSU game atmoshere for these terrible games.

But if we had a more intimidating atmosphere, maybe that FCS team (which normally plays before 10-15K) would have been more rattled to begin with and wouldn't have made it close.

Our fans need to lose the mentality that it's OK to sit back until the team does something big.  We need to actively help the team on.

I don't get a chance to get to too many games, but when I do, I'm very respectful yet very loud and engaged.

I sat in a new section (3!!!) for the first time and was appalled at the fans there.

They were all in there 70's, could barely make it up the steps, couldn't tell what was going on on the field etc.

One lady sat there and read a book!  For the entire effing game!  I swear I wanted to set it on fire.  I know she was just there supporting her aged, confused husband, but there is a time to call it quits.

Everyone in that section were more concerned with gossiping and grumbling about Rich Rods lack of family values, I even heard a lady make a racist "Mexican Coach" comment.

You could cut the ignorance/lethargy with a knife.

Yep,I felt that was true where I was sitting.  I loved the newbies in front of me who were enthused, cheerful, and prone to high-fiving everyone in a 360 degree radius after every great play.  They can come back any time.   Also loved the grandpa beside us who brought his three grandsons to the game.  Yeah, there was some up and down for the bathrooms and junk food, but I'll gladly tolerate that because love to see new generations of Big House fans being groomed for their future role.

I did not enjoy the newbie oldster idiot behind me who would loudly and relentlessly say "SIT DOWN, SIT DOWN, GET DOWN" to any poor sap who had just come down the aisle and was waiting, helpless, for the people in his row to fetch up their rain gear and popcorn and assorted shit and move their knees so he could get to his seat.

1st - very late arriving crowd.  No anticipation of a "big" game.  The first noon start of the season ... meant the student section wasn't filled until mid 1st quarter.

My seats are in the south end zone, and I can tell you that about a third of the people around me were not the regulars.  I know of seats to this game being sold during the UConn game, so I think this might be part of it.

The last 6 minutes of the game was filled with people holding their breath.  When we were finally able to breathe - the excitement was gone.  I agree - the quietest after a win - game crowd I ever been a part of.
