What Michigan Stadium could look like next
My quick and rather crude rendition of what an expansion could look like in the north end zone.

That would be interesting. But I know I am super excited for the permanent lights being installed.

...where is the gigantic high def scoreboard?
September 20th, 2010 at 9:56 AM ^
but every square inch of available space between the towers is being reserved for the dual "Terror of Mecha-Godzillatron's" that will be installed between them.
Between them and the new lights, it's going to be like a 113,000 capacity tanning booth.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:11 AM ^
If the screen is big and bright enough, we won't need (other) lights.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:32 AM ^
Does this mean the tickets are going to be subject to the tanning tax? Better tell snooki, she's going to be very upset.

They'll use it to grow pot, it is Ann Arbor after all.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:13 AM ^
Eh...this is going to happen so far in the future that I anticipate there being several more lasers in the stadium than you currently have in this picture.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:17 AM ^
But what's accurate is the lack of any expansion of the concourse wrapping around behing the upper deck. We'll be using hovercraft to get fans in and out of those sections.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:47 PM ^
This is an exceedingly clever exercise in photoshopping. But what is not seen is what sort of structure that would look like from the outside. And how to get all of those people in and out.
If Denard shares with modern science the secret to Dilithium-fueled fusion power, maybe we can install transporters to get people in and out.

I took out our current scoreboard / uhf tv screen to leave as much space as possible for the aforementioned gameday toy.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:17 AM ^
That is so high, you would need a separate weather forecast and probably lots of high wind warnings.
Although I doubt there is room, I was thinking that a University-owned hotel with rooms overlooking the field would be a great way to finish off one end, and a conference center could finish off the other end. Imagine how loud the sound would be if the whole place was finished. At some point, the law of diminishing returns comes into play with additional seating. I suspect Brandon is way ahead of anything we could come up with.

i +1'd you after the first sentence. then kept reading and now i wish i could take my vote back. but i think i am more anti-your post as a whole, so -1 to you.
September 20th, 2010 at 8:16 PM ^
You can actually -1 someone after +1ing them, it just reverses the vote...

Please, no more ideas from you. Ever. Just stop now.

I really don't like the 2nd Level thing... Texas has this at their stadium, and I hear it's terrible to sit there for games (even though they sell out consistently)

Ok then, that's where the opposing teams tickets should be allocated to
September 20th, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^
That would be an awesome sight with both sides expanded like that. Just need the lights, the new HD scoreboards, and a defense and we'll be set. Oh, and special teams!
September 20th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
What if we put the scoreboards on the boxes instead of at each end? They'd probably be easier to watch there, and would still provide room for the seating you so beautifully rendered.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:10 PM ^
Then qbs couldnt see the play clock

I'm pretty sure we wouldn't ever ruin the bowl that we have, similar to the way that Green Bay expanded Lambeau but left the original,old-school bowl. That just looks too upper-deck to me, and I think that kind of ruins the Big House's look.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:01 AM ^
photo shop a roof on it, just so I'm reminded its a bad idea.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:24 AM ^
really like it, although the scoreboards need to be fit in somewhere. Building up in the endzones would further serve to keep some of the sound in the stadium and would really make the place an even more intimidating cauldron for opponents.

As requested, this is a quick and rather crude version of the expanded stadium with the new screens (and some birds):

Though I wouldn't want to be the guy who has to adjust the antenna.
September 20th, 2010 at 4:57 PM ^
LMAO!!!!!!! Thanks for the help. LOL
September 20th, 2010 at 11:46 AM ^
I like it and I think your pretty close. I bet they'll go with a second tier as opposed to what you have shown. That way it will overhang the lower bowl and bring the fans slightly closer to the field.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:54 AM ^
seats on top of the boxes.

Sadly, I haven't been to a game at Michigan Stadium since I graduated in 07 (largely due to Law School and studying abroad) but I hear the environment in The Big House has greatly improved with the plugged in music, mic'd band and especially the impressive sound and look upgrades provided by the recent renovations. Can anyone atest to this? Is it really different/much better?
September 20th, 2010 at 1:34 PM ^
I don't know what others are thinking, but the amp'd band in my section (1) was not so good for the UMASS game. It seemed a lot better during the CT game. We are across from the band and can here them fine when they are in the student section. There was a good wind for the CT game, and wind can have a big impact on sound. So...jury is still out on that one. How do you handle the acoustic delays you get in a large stadium from two sources of sound?
I find the new stadium beautiful, much louder and a very nice upgrade. The brick work on the new structures is very classy and there is a sense of scale that the new stadium has that was not present in the old stadium, namely, it now has presence on the outside that used to be lacking.
Personally, I think something is needed on the two new towers - a block M or "Michigan" spelled out or the seal.
The place also needs some updated scoreboards...that is in the works as are permanent lighting, which will be installed before the outdoor hockey game this December.

I think ross needs to just throw down another 100 million for the "fanvision" scoreboard with huge HD tvs
