Big Ten Icons: Charles Woodson BBHN

Submitted by jwschultz on

I think it's a little bit of nonsense/a clever BTN ploy to convince people to start watching this new series that #2 is #20 on the "Big Ten Icons" list (although, clearly, #19 Suzy Favor Hamilton belongs higher than Charles).

BUT, I have to say it's a delightful chaser for this afternoon's abomination.  I'm enjoying it thoroughly.

I can't believe he's that low on the list, unless the list isn't a rating.  It's pretty stupid that there was even a Peyton Manning argument to begin with.

I know that not everyone on here is a Green Bay fan like me, but it is such a treat to turn on my TV and watch Woodson still play lights-out football every week.

Is he an NFL hall-of-famer yet?  (Edited to say: obviously I know he's not in the HoF yet, but is he a sure thing when his time comes?)

But I'm kinda rooting for them to win it all so he could get a Super Bowl ring to top it off. It's a shame he's had as many injuries as he's had, and he was stuck with the Raiders (who floundered after their one appearance in the SB). Plus he'd equal Manning there too. ;-) Only thing better would be ring #4 for Brady.

that's holy that list isn't in order. 20? Are you fucking kidding me?! I'd say Archie with his two Heismans and Jesse Owens with punching Hitler in the dong belong ahead of Woodson. That's it.

Leaders And Best

Do I think Woodson should be ranked higher?  Yes.  But let's settle down here and take off our maize and blue glasses for a moment.  This is a list ranking athletes from EVERY sport in Big Ten history.  I knew from the beginning that Woodson was probably a long shot to make the top ten.  Is it really going to make a difference if he was #20 or #12?

There will probably only be a handful of football players ranked above Woodson: Archie Griffin, Dick Butkus, and maybe Red Grange.  That is pretty good company.

I also really think the Big Ten may have set this up to open the series with a really well known recent athlete from a current in-season sport.  And I can almost guarantee you that the #1 athlete will be a basketball player when the series concludes in March.  It's a TV show...settle down.  This list was probably political with every school, sport and gender needing to be represented.

In a previous thread on the Big Ten Icons list, people were listing possible athletes in the top 20 and the list is astounding.   Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz, Archie Griffin, Dick Butkus, Red Grange, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Dave Winfield, John Wooden, Steve Alford, Jack Nicklaus.  Every one of these athletes has their own arguments to be ranked very highly.  And that is only looking at the male athletes.

You shouldn't be ranked in front of him. So Archie yes, Butkus no. The problem with a lot of the athletes listed, if Keith Jackson is to be believe (and who would doubt him), it's only supposed to be what you did as a college player. Not as a pro. So all the pro accomplishments of those players don't count. And by that measure, not to many of them match Charles. Jesse Owens? Sure. Some of the others? Not so much.
