Triple Option
I'd love to see M break out the triple option this year with Hopkins as the dive back and Fitz as the pitch back. Do you think it is in the playbook already, yet to be installed in the arsenal, or never gonna happen? If it is in the arsenal this year, when could we/I expect to see it??

I'd love to see it as an option. The more we show, the more teams have to prepare for.

Eh, the qb takes harder hits in the triple option since he will get hit even if he pitches it. Which scares me....

Good point. Pat got lit up on that play. Not running it may help in the durability of denard down the road. And really that play works best when the qb hangs in until the last second and pitches and sacrifices himself.

2 RBs who have 1 combined carry are going to be on the field to run the triple option, which is a very disciplined scheme that requires alot of reps and good execution? Yeah I don't think so. For now I think we need to establish a #1 RB and hone the zone read and running game before starting to bring out all the tricks in the playbook. Look for a simple playbook against UMass, with all the RBs getting reps so we can figure out which RB we can count on to team up with Denard.

The triple option is actually four options.
The fullback plunge, quarterback sweep, halfback toss, or option pass.

I don't think we will see any triple option from under center, but there is a great chance that we will eventually see it this year out of the shotgun. RR and the offense are keeping it as plain as possible until the Big Ten schedule starts.

I agree. USF runs this play quite a bit and it is very successful; and Denard would be a lot scarrier than B.J. Daniels running it. it might be a way to get the RBs into open field.

If we are not going to use it consistently as part of the o, we should us it a couple of times so people prep for it. If we are going to use it, we should hold off as long as possible and kick someones ass with it.

Yea...I was picturin it run out of the gun, but I see the negatives with the extra hits on the QB and the overall inexperience.

If you wanted something vintage it would make more sense to incorporate a few single wing plays into the offense rather than the triple option.

It didn't turn out too well. It's a hard play to run unless you practice it a lot.

We did run it last year to disastrous effect against Purdue. We are crushing fools with what we have, no need to add exotics that we might not be able to excute properly.

They actually showed quite a bit of misdirection in the UConn game. They weren't doing it on every series, but with misdirection you can't otherwise it loses its effect.

The spread option creates many more mismatches than squeezing everyone together for an old style triple option. At this point, Denard can pitch, keep, or pass. Sounds like enough of a triple option to me.
