Final Collection of Lou Holtz Comments

Submitted by Fresh Meat on

There have been various threads on pieces of this.  Here is a final collection of the days worth.

Pre Game-- Said ND was only game he'd pay to see, best place to see a game in America.  Crist was going to be breakout QB of the week.  Allen was going to be breakout RB of the week.  Seriously, he said all three of those things with a straight face.  He has no awareness of his homerness.

Post Game- He said ND should be proud of the D, because outside of one player they played well.  Does he realize that they still gave up 500 yards?  Does he also realize that on Denard's rushing and passing plays, it wasn't just him?  Yanno, those guys sometimes block for him and those WR's sometimes catch it, and even run after the catch occasionally.  And maybe ND's defense should have done something about those guys blocking for Denard or catching his passes.  But who lets rationality get in the way.

Later Post Game-- On Crists final play that he threw out the back of the end zone, he couldn't help but comment on the great protection by the O-line.  Even though Crist makes one of the worst throws I've ever seen (completely removing ANY chance of a catch to win the game), even though on that play ND lost, he still had to say something about how great ND is in the face of obvious suck.  Mark May pointed out to him that Michigan was rushing 3 vs. 5 blockers, but that doesn't matter to sweet sweet Lou.

I know he's old, but how does ESPN put up with this?  It is insane how each week, each and every single week, he picks ND to be the winner and the breakout player and whatever else.  Not to mention he perennially picks them to win it all at the beginning of the year.  I don't get how ESPN doesn't see how he completely ruins their credibility.  It used to make me laugh, but I'm starting to get mad about it.

When you say "going to the Miami Heat" do you mean "taking my talents to South Beach?" Sure "The Decision" was terrible, and represents everything that is wrong and evil, but thanks to LeBron and ESPN I can now have fun working "taking my talents" into everyday conversations. For example, I'm about to take my talents to the library.

That's why I appreciate Lou, he provides great comedic relief, even if its totally unintentional

Most of the country finds ND irrelevant.  Therefore, it's kind of like that crazy uncle that shows up to Thanksgiving talking all kinds of jibberish, and everyone just laughs it off as the crazy uncle.  If you don't have a chip in the game in regards to ND, you would find him hilarious as well, but unfortunately for us, he makes us hate ND even more.

Mark May is also an arse but the only time he ain't insufferable is when he's ragging Old Lou. But it's a testament to how ghastly Mark May is that even when he's on the side of the angels he's all but unendurable.

What a duo!

He stays on ESPN because what he adds to their broadcasts is, as far as the actual factual nature of his pronouncements is concerns, inessential. He is there because he is more entertaining than Todd McShay, was an extremely good college football coach, and can tell jokes. May is playing straight man to his wild card. That's just how it is.

Don't take it seriously. Holtz doesn't. And neither does May.

Yes. It's all about entertainment, providing something to get you to watch the halftime show instead of flipping to some other game or to watch Final instead of just getting the highlights on online. Lou is hilarious, both intentionally and unintentionally, and he's a very well known figure to casual college football fans. He's also very hateable with his blatant homerism, which makes for a great TV combination.

I kind of feel bad for people who think Lou is actually offering up serious analysis or that he and Mark May actually hate each other. It's just for show, recognize that and enjoy it.

Not to mention that Lou is also a cheater. The guy is a scum bag idiot. Almost everything he says is ridiculous or stupid.

It really has to drive OSU fans crazy that on a day that they beat Miami behind a good performance by Pryor (and 4 JH interceptions) that all the media and Heisman hype is about the the "scUM" QB.

Suck it Tressel (Lauer)!!!!

He's college football crazy old grandpa, the one who talks about Johnny U and how it was a better game before the put facemasks on the guys.  Plus, he's the last great ND coach, so of course he is going to talk about ND.  Trust me, if Desmond was in that chair it would have been pro-Michigan.  Holtz is somewhat harmless, and if memory serves me defended RR a couple of times when everyone else was ragging on him, saying it takes time for a coach to make his mark.

I can forgive a certain amount of homerism, but Holtz is way over that line. He can't defend the things he says in a remotely credible way. The "one man" comment is pretty much par for the course.

May is a USC homer, but he manages to keep it somewhat under control (although it helps that USC has been pretty damn good for most of the last decade).

To be honest, I usually put it on mute when Holtz starts to talk about Notre Dame.

...went to Pitt where he was awarded the Outland Trophy in his senior year.  His USC gushing is not homerism, just WWL boosterism.  He's got one NCAA national championship ring, two super bowl rings and is a member of the CFB HoF.

That said, it pains me that a famed member of my favorite NFL team (he was also named one of the top 70 Redskins of all time by the team in its 70th anniversary year) can be such a dork on the set, even if it's true (and it is), that much of what is said is scripted and schtick.

But to give credit to ND (and at a micro level to Holtz) I thought Crist and Allen put on a solid showing (I know, I know, against a "bend-but-don't-break" D, that did more breaking than bending) in the game.  I'm certainly not lickin' my chops at the thought of next years game...

So he's like all the other ND fans, then, right?

I like most of the ESPN College coverage except for Lou Holtz and Lee Corso...theyre just annoying. Mark May was annoying especially when ESPN did the whole comparing USC to the best college teams of all time...and then they lost to Texas. May can be bearable though.

Does Lou Holtz have a speech problem??? I couldn't remember gauging by some of your comments. I'm sure you guys would love to see him on the air with Cowturd. ROFLCOPTER.

But seriously, the guy makes dumb comments, but making fun of the way he talks is even more dumberist. Let's grow up a little. We're Michigan Men.
