No more Tate posts

Submitted by bronxblue on

This might be reactionary (and yeah, I get the skewed logic in creating a thread on this topic), but can we stop with all of the Tate topics?  I am tired of people constantly posting about how he "quit" on this team, how he sucked in the offseason and "good riddance" if he leaves.  This is a 19-year-old kid who bled for this team all last year, played through injuries, led them back to respectability, and who was very publicly shown up when Gardner was inserted for Robinson.

I have no idea what is going on in the minds of the coaches and players, but I am fairly certain that everyone on this board's idea of those thoughts are at least partially wrong.  And right now, I just want to enjoy a win and get ready for ND.

If you want vent about Tate, do it here.  But a whole board filled with questions about Tate leaving doesn't help anybody.

You can post your support for Tate if you want ( I support him as well), but I think you're stepping over the line asking others not to discuss him. Thin is THE U of M discussion forum, afterall.

I agree with you 100%  I am a high school football coach- I deal with 17 and 18 year old kids all the time.  When you have -teen- at the end of your age you tend to make more mistakes.  Maybe Tate made some, maybe he was a little cocky.  It is that swagger that we want our athletes to have.  You have to have supreme confidence to put yourself in front of 100,000 fans and perform.  LEAVE TATE ALONE- it will all work out.

yeah, he (Tate) needs to stay ready. i'm personally of the opinion that denard carrying the ball 20+ times a game is unsustainable. he was awesome today, and deserves all the praise he gets, but things will not always be this easy, and he's going to take some wicked hits as the schedule continues.

Someone else, be it Devin or Tate, better be ready and able to come in if something happens.

anyway, great win... too bad ESPN had to focus on Tate there at the end. kind of unnecessary, IMO. Not to defend a player being away from his teammates, but still.

I know DRob awesome, Coach just wants to win etc. but seriously? You have last years good starter replaced by a Freshman as the backup?  If DG is really that good and does give us the best chance to win either he needs to start or we need to reserve him for years when tate and Denard are gone. I guess only time will tell, if Tate never sees the field again and DG is the solid backup then fine, but if you intend on playing Forcier as well down the road it made no sense to burn a redshirt.

Good win, just nitpicking but that made me Irate when it happened so I couldn't let it go.

I most definitely do *not* want Tate to leave.  I want him to get his head on straight and turn things around.  But on the other hand, the notion that this can simply be dismissed by "Oh, he's a teenage kid" and that it's something that he should be allowed a free pass on is ridiculous.  This is major, divisiion I college football, expectations are higher.  Tate was offered an opportunity to play at M because the coaches believe he's an exceptional student-athlete.  We saw flashes of that last year.  But right now he is being way, way less than exceptional.

But I guess that is my point - all we know is that the coaching staff was unhappy with him in the offseason and he mopped on the bench.  We really don't know anything else beyond what the coaches and players show us during a few controlled scrimmages and in the game - Tate might be working really hard but Gardner just passed him on the depth chart.  It is facetious to believe we know why RR made the calls he did, but "blaming" Tate without additional evidence doesn't seem necessary.

I generally agree with the comments above but I do recall Denard cheering Tate on last year as he was on the bench. Some reciprocity towards Denard would be the right thing to do. The Team, the Team, the Team.

Tate's absence today may just be part of a huge mind-fuck intended solely for Notre Dame.  If Kelly et al don't think that there is any chance Tate will start next week, it may totally effect the way they prepare, defensively, for Michigan in the coming week.  RR and his staff could be coy all week about who might start and then: BLAM-O in comes the guy who tore the Irish's hearts out last year.

Of course this is just one dude's E-pinion.  I will take my tin foil hat off now.  But it's fun to think about.  Especially after a few beers!

I'm not sure that RR and Tate are pulling a ruse on ND, but I fully expect Tate to see the field next week.  I do agree that RR is not going to show his whole hand against UConn, and ND will be left wondering all week who is going to be taking snaps if/when Robinson takes a breather.

Not going to show his whole hand?  Comments like this are just stupid..Now all of a sudden Michigan is so good that they are holding back against a team that is favored to win the Big East?  Here is a fact, Denard is the starting quarterback...If Denard is playing well enough, no other qb will see the field...geez

Um, there is a difference between running your trick/different plays and lineups when you are up 20 than when it is close.  After that 7+ minute drive in the second half, I'm sure RR decided there was no need to showcase the rest of the playbook for ND and upcoming opponents.

And here's a protip - don't call a comment stupid and then put forth an extremely couched statement like "If Denard is playing well, no other QB will see the field" when RR brought out DR last year even when Tate was tearing up opposing defenses.  It is called keeping the defense guessing.

Jesus. This is the 2nd time today someone used "effect" and "affect" incorrectly. I don't understand what's so hard about this. One is a noun and the other is a verb. Anyone who finished junior high school should understand the difference.

Same goes for people who mix up "to" and "too".

I understand people want to support Rich Rod, I'm fine with that and I agree with supporting him.  I personally disagree a bit with how he's handling it and I would have preferred Tate in that situation.  Regardless, and again, I understand if you just want to support Coach Rod, but way too many people are completely throwing Tate under the bus like he's already Boran or something.  It's getting to be way, way too much.

Tate hasn't gone about being the starter last year the right way according to reports, I personally don't think Rich Rod is handling everything correctly here (though I agree with a lot of what Rich Rod did before this), but either way people that play, or coach, or help out the Michigan football team shouldn't be completely thrown under the bus without regard, which, unfortunately, seems to be starting a little.

the few minutes of Tate sitting on the bench served nothing but stirring up the negativity this team is fighting off... I don't want to see him go. Give the kid a chance to get his head together. Maybe today was a "tough love" lesson...

If we know anything about RR, it's that he is a straight shooter with the players. I've got no inside scoop (I live 4,000 miles from Ann Arbor), but I would suppose that Tate knew exactly how the day was going to pan out. My guess is that this is all part of "earning back his wings" and that Tate (and his family) were in on the whole thing. It's likely that Tate will be a major contributor this year and that the lessons learned from whatever off season situation occured and the subsequent consequences will help the team and Tate in the long run.

As for him sitting on the bench with a couple of towels wrapped around him... I think he was keeping warm... aside from the commentators comments (and they are paid to turn the mundane into high drama), he did not appear to be pouting to me... there were like two minutes left in a game that was in hand. He wasn't crying, or throwing things... I think I saw him talking with a trainer or something in what appeared to be a casual conversation... probably getting his mind ready for Notre Dame week.

We've got a lot of football to play. Let the cooler head prevail.

Come on, OP. You are axing a bunch of message board guys to be rational--what the fuck are you thinking?

They ALL know what happened with Tate, because the intranets rumors said so!

event that our starting QB goes down with and injury, most on here and mlive will be trying to suck Tate's left nut.  So shut the hell up, and have some class.  Magnus is correct about the composition of this board...............
