I'm surprised he's ahead of Forcier, but Coach Rod knows best
September 4th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
Whatever it takes to win!
September 4th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
I'm crazy about that decision.
September 4th, 2010 at 11:55 PM ^
I personally love that decision. If he was really serious that Gardner was going to play this year, and there's no reason to believe that he wasn't serious, then it was a great move because it takes the possibility and temptation off of the table right away. No they can just focus on playing football this year.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:12 PM ^
Unreal that he would burn Gardner's redshirt instead of just playing Forcier. The writing is on the wall folks. Forcier is most likely gone and now we are down to a freshman to backup Robinson. How could Forcier go from starting last year to 3rd on the depth chart? I'm kind of pissed because I feel like Forcier is being thrown under the bus. Coach Rod that was a VERY bold move. I CANNOT believe this. If Robinson gets hurt we are most likely screwed because Gardner is not game ready. Forcier must of done something to piss Coach Rod off bad.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:50 PM ^
Come back down off the ledge there chief. We're 1-0 and if Gardner is better than Forcier, he's better than Forcier.
September 5th, 2010 at 2:45 AM ^
I'd love to hear how you plan on backing this statement up
If Robinson gets hurt we are most likely screwed because Gardner is not game ready
Maybe we can let the kid take more than two snaps before we start passing judgement?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:21 PM ^
There is no way Gardner would be more productive this year then Forcier. Has Rich not learned that Freshman QB = Disaster? WOW just wow. Unreal. Prepare for a transfer folks. Forcier looked PISSED on the sideline when Coach Rod told him that Gardner was going in. Forcier is gone folks! Gardner's redshirt is burned. FUCK!!!!

If Tate came in under Lloyd his career would've turned out just like Jason's did. He grew up in a family that bred him to be a quarterback from the moment the sperm hit the overies. He was as polished his freshman as most D-1 quarterbacks after two years. That being said, preparation doesn't make him great. There's only so much that can do for you. Part of it is genetics, and while Tate was polished, he didn't have the skill set needed.
It was pretty obvious during the Iowa game Rich Rod wasn't a fan of Tate's... but Tate was literally his ONLY option. Devin Gardener is a much more skilled player, and with the help of spring practice has been able to refine his talent to much better suit Rich Rod's system than Tate's talent ever was.
Tate should always be remembered positively by Michigan fans for helping bridge a gap that was the lowest talent level ever to step foot on campus in Ann Arbor. But unfortunately his time (tentatively since Denard could get hurt and Devin really truely might not be ready) is up when it comes to being a consistant on-field contributer. But he also could work harder from this point on and try to be a leader and impact this team off the field too. I hope that's what he does.
I love Tate and I hope nothing but the best for him. But what's the best for him isn't what's best for the on-field performance of Michigan. It's just the flat out truth.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:52 PM ^
There is no possible way that DG is as ready to play as Tate is--that is just a fact, regardless if how talented DG is. So unless Tate broke a team rule, or something serious attitude wise, there is really no justification for playing DG. I don't think that can even be fairly argued.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:02 PM ^
It's quite possible Tate regessed since last year having not practiced much in the summer. Ezeh regressed last year and by all reports practiced his ass off. All reports last year suggested Tate didn't prepare as hard as he had the year before (when he won the veterans' support as a freshman). If Tate isn't playing it's his own fault.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:00 PM ^
Well I doubt RR put Gardner in there for shits and giggles. My guess is either Tate has some serious attitude issues, which wouldn't be surprising, or Gardner has made some great striedes. I think it's a combination of the two.
September 5th, 2010 at 6:17 PM ^
I agree with this logic, and infer from the ambiguous comments by his Dad that something along these lines are probably what is going on.
September 5th, 2010 at 6:26 PM ^
Did you have a nice day in East Lansing yesterday? Did you get a chance to TiVo the Michigan game for later viewing pleasure?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:16 PM ^
I'll never forget where I was the moment the rage about Garner'sburned redshirt first flared up.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:20 PM ^
There is no reason to have Gardner backing up Robinson. Coach Rod would rather have a TRUE FRESHMAN back up Robinson then last year's starter that took us to a 4-0 start? WHY COACH ROD???????????? I am seriously starting to question Coach Rod's common sense. I AM PISSED!!!!
September 4th, 2010 at 6:22 PM ^
How do you REALLY feel about Gardner being 2nd string though? Your first 3 posts on the topic weren't quite clear.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:32 PM ^
Sorry man, I'm just ranting. It has been an awesome game. Too many emotions to keep inside.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:20 PM ^
Gardner can play a certian number of plays in the first 3 games and still redshirt.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:39 PM ^
From the looks of it Gardner is the backup. Forcier is sitting on the bench by himself making a scene. Writing is on the wall. Coach Rod is digging his own grave. We are ONE play away from ANOTHER TRUE FRESHMAN QB playing. Judging by how many big hits Robinson has taken today that is very possibly going to happen.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:38 PM ^
after posting i wondered if i knew the complete rules. thanks for clearing it up.
September 4th, 2010 at 9:46 PM ^
14.2.3.1 Minimum Amount of Competition. Any competition, regardless of time, during a season in an intercollegiate sport shall be counted as a season of competition in that sport, except as provided in Bylaws 14.2.3.1.1,
14.2.3.1.2, 14.2.3.1.3 and 14.2.3.1.4. This provision is applicable to intercollegiate athletics competition conducted by a two-year or four-year collegiate institution at the varsity or subvarsity level. (Revised: 1/11/94, 4/28/05 effective 8/1/05, 5/9/06, 1/16/10 effective 8/1/10)
Gardner redshirt this year=burned
There is, however, a provision for a medical reshirt if he gets injured and those rules are something like less than 15% of the total season played. That is what confuses people the most I believe.
September 4th, 2010 at 9:55 PM ^
Any time you play a single snap of any game, it counts as a sesaon played and becomes inelligible for redshirting.
It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:38 PM ^
According to NCAA:
Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:30 PM ^
Tate looked PISSED when the showed him after Gardiner went in. Can't say I blame him...it's the one thing that has me scratching my head after what was otherwise and awesome game. It just doesn't make any sense.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:37 PM ^
now they show Tate sulking at the end of the bench alone? Don't like this at all.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:40 PM ^
Guys relax.. Its the first game of the season and with DR we looked upbeat and straight dangerous. While I appreciate the monumental impact of redshirting DG could have, if RR thinks that DG is the better option at Q hes going to play. Lets also not kid ourselves, an extra year with DG would be fantastic but whats to keep him from taking it next year?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:47 PM ^
Even if Tate didn't improve at all from last year he would still be a better option then Gardner right now. Tate saved Rich Rod's job last year by leading us to a 4-0 start. This ain't going to end well, I can already tell.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:25 PM ^
I believe that you are not aware of how things work in reality. There are a few scenarios that would have caused RR to lose his job after two years, Not starting out 4-0 isn't one of them.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:25 PM ^

September 4th, 2010 at 6:42 PM ^
I'll trust RR on this call, but I still think the destruction of Tate's confidence is going to hurt this team this year. At some point, UM is going to need his passing, and right now he is a shell of his former self.
September 5th, 2010 at 6:31 PM ^
you know, the one where Tate says "My confidence has been destroyed and I feel like a shell of my former self."
Did I miss the memo where it was announced that MGoBlog had become sportstalk radio?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:44 PM ^
last year...summer workouts are not mandatory..but neither is playing time. I was pissed at 1st, but I think coach had to make a point with Tate..if you blow off the voluntary workouts..you will not play. If that means Tate transfers, oh well. Yes if our starting QB gets hurt we are screwed, but how many teams in the country can say the same thing? As for the redshirt, it kind of pisses me off to know its gone now..seeing how amazing Denard is.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:49 PM ^
Don't drink the Denard kool-aid just yet man. Denard played AMAZING against UCONN, but we will see what he is made of against ND. Tate transferring is a HUGE deal. More bad press, and we would lose our only QB that has proven he can pass against good teams.
September 4th, 2010 at 8:36 PM ^
Denard just had one of the most electrifying games ever for a Michigan QB. He tore to shreds a highly touted UConn front seven. He worked hard during the offseason. His teammates love him and go to battle for him. He has vastly improved his throwing and completely nearly 90% of his passes today. He played great and has done everything right. He deserves for us to believe in him.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:47 PM ^
...who played:
Terrance Talbott, Cullen Christian, Jibreel Black.
Who did I miss?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:50 PM ^
Carvin Johnson
September 4th, 2010 at 6:52 PM ^
and Carvin got hurt....any word on his injury?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:59 PM ^
Carvin Johnson, Jeremy Jackson, and I think Courtney Avery but I'm not 100% sure about him.
September 4th, 2010 at 11:06 PM ^
Courtney Avery was on kickoff.
Drew Dileo was the holder.
Marvin Robinson was on kickoff as well.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:49 PM ^
Coach Rod said several times that Devin would play this year. Relax. He's doing whats best for the team.
GO BLUE
September 4th, 2010 at 6:51 PM ^
the Razorbacks seem to like Michigan quarterbacks.
Congratulations on the home opener win against a good team. Wolverines looked good.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:52 PM ^
But it is possible (though unlikely) that they could redshirt DG another year.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:53 PM ^
i was just as pissed at others originally, but seeing tate sit on the bench makes me believe he has not truly "earned his wings". he should have been up rooting the team on--- no matter what. the team the team the team, i will trust rrod
September 4th, 2010 at 7:12 PM ^
Agree 100%.
The idea that some people in this thread think RR doesn't know what's at stake - and they do - is foolishness.
Tate sitting their sulking while THE TEAM was on the way to a huge win was not the move of a team player, plain and simple.
September 5th, 2010 at 3:00 AM ^
Tate now realizes his chances of playing are probably slim to none. I'm not surprised he's upset. He shouldn't have been off by himself, however, with the towel around him it was like he was trying to hide or something. Should have at least pretended to be happy.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:53 PM ^
In RR we trust.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:57 PM ^
Why are people stuck on redshirting Devin. If he is ready, he should play. Coach Rod thinks he adds value otherwise he wouldnt be out there. As for Tate. lets not give up on him yet, he is young and may get his act together.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:58 PM ^
Boy TQ177, you must really spend a lot of time at practice since you're so certain that Gardner isn't game ready and that you know better than the coaching staff.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:13 PM ^
Sorry for questioning our stupid ass coach. As a lifetime fan of U-M football, I am NOT allowed to speak my opinion. Fuck you sir!
