Shaquelle Evans is Leaving Notre Dame

Submitted by BiSB on

So, I'd heard some rumblings about this in recent days, but nothing concrete.  However, it looks like the cat is out of the bag, and former five-star recruit Shaquelle Evans is leaving the Irish.

Sounds like a playing time situation, though I've also heard rumors of personality differences between the Evans and Brian Kelly. These things are to be expected with a new regime, though the timing is bad for a Notre Dame team trying to replace Golden Tate.

EDIT: TomVH is citing some guy with the same general info (http://twitter.com/tomvh).  ND boards are saying he's going to Oregon, though that is very unconfirmed.

EDIT II: Yeah, this is a Bleacher Report article.  Consider yourself warned.

Holy shit!  Sorry, I know nothing about recruiting.

Somewhat personal question, just how bad is South Bend day-to-day?  I'm applying to B-School this year, and ND is one of my options.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited.  Ross is my number one choice, but ND is going to get an application.  I'll have a "HOLY FUCKING SHIT OMG!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111@@!!!" type post on January 11th if I get in.

BTW, have fun with the essays.  It's like a four month long dong punch.

South Bend is fine, though far from spectacular.  One thing to know is that South Bend is not a college town; it is a town with a college in it.  There is very little interaction between the city and the university.

It isn't a very exciting town, but the university has its moments.

"Transfering is almost never a good idea for college atheletes."

You know, except for all those times when it allows the kid to get in an environment better suited for him.

I have a relative that lives down there.  I've visited several times and my impression is that the campus and areas immediately surrounding it are fairly nice.  In fact, south of the campus, there has been a lot of construction going on over the last few years.

However, I think South Bend itself is pretty drab.  I wouldn't say toilet, but I might say urinal.  Again, the campus is beautiful and the history is great, but yikes, the city is nothing.

Tai-ler Jones jumped him on the depth chart, and Theo Riddick is entrenched in the slot, but I still don't really understand his decision. Kumara is graduating, and I'm sure Floyd leaves after this year, so the depth chart would be wide open and he would have 2 years of eligibility left.

I await Irish's comment on the matter.  It does seem like this is going to happen when a new type of coach with a different type of attitude comes into the job.  Wish the kid best of luck.

It was a kick ass video game on sega genesis. Think Street Fighter - except you're shaq.

(yes, i actually played this game when i was 8ish. and no i didnt own it. It was around the same time I realized that "Fake Punt" was not the play to run every down in madden... it didn't surprise the computer on first and 10.)

its hard to know what to make of shaq. he shot up the depth chart in camp last year (although weis was perhaps unduly biased by recruiting stars) and then ended up buried by the end of the season. robby toma, a true freshman with zero recruiting hype was getting lots more playing time than shaq, for example. the transfer rumors were thick during last season and then again when weis was fired.i haven't heard kelly say much about him, other than passing comments this summer.

i don't think it'll hurt nd's passing game much this year as we still have some depth - kamara, goodman, toma, walker behind floyd/riddick/jones. maybe it'll mean that an additional freshman loses a redshirt. it probably means that we'll see lots of multiple tight end sets as rudolph, ragone and eifert all look like decent receiving threats.

it has the chance to really sting for next year, though. kamara graduates, floyd likely leaves early, the freshman aren't highly touted and no wrs committed for 2011 yet. he would have been expected to start next year or at the very least be in heavy rotation.

What does that say.  Southbend has had nothing to do forever.  In fact, even Notre Dame seperated itself from the city and no longer acknowledges being in Southbend.  The CFB Hall of Fame thinks SB sucks so bad, they are moving.......

The speculation was being so far from home etc etc.  Truth be told he was in Weis' dog house last year and clearly has not made up for lost time.  All the best where ever he goes but I wouldn't hang this one on Kelly.

Here

I know I'm reading too much into it, but I found this quote from Kelly interesting:

"Maybe he just didn't like the hot weather we have here in South Bend," Kelly added. "I don't think he saw himself fitting in the offense. We'll release him to whatever school he chooses that is the right fit for him."

Only because it made me ask--what if (you think) the school he piacks is not the right for him?  Probably just unintentionally phrased.
