Would you ever want to play app St again?

Submitted by cargo on

I for one say yes, I was lucky enough to be in a period of my life where I couldn't follow Michigan as much so the The Horror isnt as painful but I would love a revenge game.

Let me start off by saying, I am not completely sure how the athletic divisions are set up (whether it is by enrollment, competitive advantage, combinations of factors, etc.), but I hate playing I-AA teams in general.

I do not wish to play any more of them, no matter how accomplished they may be.  If App St. moved up to I-A because they had been dominating I-AA for so long, there may be some merit in a revenge game to kick the living shit out of them...however, until that happens, STAY AWAY from I-AA!

I hate scheduling FCS teams but...YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES. In the grand scheme of things, beating them would mean nothing at all, but it sure would make me feel a little bit better. The demon that is The Horror won't ever be completely exorcised, but dang it I hope we bring them back at some point and just completely destroy them in Georgia Tech-Cumberland fashion.

I don't see the advantage of it.  If we play them, it just brings up that whole horrendous storyline (which incidentally was the first year I got season tickets) again, and it wont prove anything.  There's no point in writing a big check to some team so it can bring up bad memories.  We will never beat that particular team, but it's in the past now.

These are all the teams we don't have a winning record against. I'd rather play each of them however many times it takes to get a winning record before we play App State again.

YEAH DUDE LET'S PLAY APPY STATE AGAIN BECAUSE THAT WILL TOTALLY MAKE 2007 NOT COUNT!

It would be a horrendous idea. Plain and simple. People have, mercifully, all but forgotten the Horror... why dredge all that back up again? So we can win like we should have in the first place? Oh boy. That'll show everyone.

I think I'd be for it. Can you imagine the media circus that would entail? It would instantly be one of the most anticipated week 1 games.

We'd just have to make sure we win.

Because i hate opening this page and having to close my eyes while I scroll quickly past the A's.  Seeing that one loss will always sting because of the memory (preseason # fucking 5), but knowing that we are 0-1 againt them this millenium is unbearable.

Play them once.  Kick their ass.  Deal with the "so what, they aren't the same team" criticisms. Never schedule an FCS school again.

SpreadGuru

is not what they were.  In 2007, they had a lot of NFL talent on that team.  Also, they lost the "hard ass" edge from that team, namely their OL coach Shawn Elliott who is now at South Carolina.

But the answer is no.  It's a no win proposition.

No, it's like going back to one of the worst moments in your life and reliving it.  You'll never get true closure from it if you keep trying to "fix" what happened.  The best thing for UM to do is, as Butters so eloquently says, "Just walk away."

Way to bring up the worst opening game in Michigan football history one week before what could be the most important opening game in a generation.

If we score less than 70 next week, I'm going to have to blame it on you now.

Michigan should go to App. State and play them there.  Like a Thursday nighter, I am all for drama, that would be interesting and unprecedented.  Lets do something outside the box as opposed to Bowling Green at home.  Why not?

ontarioblue

August 26th, 2010 at 8:51 AM ^

Are you nuts?  Why subject us to the scrutiny of the National media leading up to the game.  The pressure on the team would be huge, and like said above, this is a no win situtation for the maize and blue.

The Horror was a fucking fluke, plain and simple.  With current personnel, not even the loaded roster we had that was victimized by cosmic forces, Michigan would detroy the shit out of Appalachian State, not quite to Delaware State levels, but it would not be a competitive game.  The App. State v. Michigan from 07 could be played 1,000 consecutive times with the teams as they were at the time and App. State would win approximately 00 of those games.  The rematch would be the ass-throtling that should have transpired 3 years ago, but it would also be cool for a program like Michigan to play at a subdivision school.  It is not a no-win, sure, the school would lose a little revenue for dropping a cupcake sellout at home, but whatever.  I think it would be cool.

I say let App State have that "One Shining Moment"...they earned it.

Does is suck for us, as UM fans, that it came against OUR team? Absolutely. However,  if they had beaten Texas, USC or OSU I would have absolutely loved the "David vs. Goliath" storyline.

Playing them again in some vain attempt to "get 'em back" would just seem petty and vindictive IMO.

But it should be while we still have players on the roster from the 2007 squad.  And Michigan should drag its players all the way to whatever town it is that App St has its facilities in and give them the home game that they earned.  There was more than enough arrogance surrounding our side of the ball going into the game that year; it would be a valuable lesson for our players to see who exactly it was that beat them.  In fact, I would make this an ongoing lesson and schedule it every fourth year so that Michigan men never again forget that football does not provide automatic wins.

I believe that Bo would have owned this situation (instead of burying his head in the sand like some of the posters on this thread have suggested we do.)  He would have been stomping pissed, unleashed a torrent of rage on his players for being arrogant in overlooking an opponent, and would have loaded up his players on a bus that very next year and made the long trip to a tiny town.  It's not about revenge.  It's about the integrity of respecting your opponent.

It would look sorta like the 70-21 thrashing of Illinois after Illinois fired Mo.  Add that to the Bob Ufer tribute, and they were definitely not going to let up on the accelerator.  Illinois was up 21-7 and Michigan scored 56 straight points on them.  It is one of my favorite Michigan football memories, and of course it is wonderfully preserved by Wolverine Historian:

Edit:  After posting, I looked at the mgolicious board; of course, the game is there.

I was at the game - man that was a pounding, especially after being down 21-7.  It was actually 63 straight which is incredible considering that Illinois was pretty good.  Disappointing season overall given the expectations but there were certainly some highs.

Good post, and a good memory, thanks.

On reading the thread title I realized I was vehemently opposed to the idea of playing AppSt again, but this idea actually sounds quite reasonable. I rather like it.

MaizeAndBlueWahoo

Any revenge factor would be totally outweighed by the obnoxiousness of the Favre-esque media cycle surrounding the week before the game.  ESPN would be all "HAI GUYZ REMEMBER THAT TIME MICHIGAN LOST TO APPY STATE THAT WAS PRETTY COOL AMIRITE" and it'd be nonstop.  And all throughout the game they'd have 2007 replays.

MH20

August 26th, 2010 at 9:07 AM ^

No, there is no point.  Even if Michigan wins, what does that accomplish?  Yay, we beat a team we're supposed to beat.  That ship has sailed, plus, as jmblue noted, I hate playing 1-AA teams.  There is no reason to schedule a 1-AA when there are just as yummy cream-puffs in the 1-A ranks.  Do I like scheduling 1-A mattresses?  No, but I'd rather play San Jose State or North Texas if I had to choose between one of them and an FCS school.

Why bring it up in the media when the recruits in a few years won't even know it ever happened?

lose/lose as many have said

even uconn is a bit of a lose/lose--the educated football fan understands they are an increasingly competetive program, but most would consider it a bigger embassment to lose than it really would be--not saying a loss is inevitable, it's unlikely

throw away games should be maximized with teams that have tradition, a brand, but aren't really that tough--your Clemsons, Texas A&M's

and Michigan went down to Boone, NC for a Thursday night game, as someone suggested, i think it would be an excellent PR move. Especially if it coincides with App State moving into 1-A (FBS) and this was played as their first game as a member of the FBS. As someone else said, just make damn sure to win this time.

I see no point in bringing them back to the Big House for another "cupcake" game when they are plenty of Baby Seal U.-type teams out there waiting for that paycheck.

NO! Michigan should never play another D-1AA team again. There is no reason, no win for Michigan to do so. Look at the only two we've played. The most embarassing loss in program history, and then the baby seal game. If there is an opportunity to play a 1-AA team, it's a preseason game, as RR is wanting. Close the game - don't make it public, just let the guys go out and play someone else.

Hell no! It's like the big tough guy at school fights the little guy. The little guy hits him just right on the chin and knocks him out. Everyone knows 99 times out of 100 the big guy wins. We have nothing to prove. It sucks but shit happens let just move on.

is bat shit freaking crazy!

What is wrong with you people? HELL NO we should not play them again. We should also never play delaware state again, or UMass again (after tihis year). Screw playing 1AA teams. We want a winning record against everybody? Do you people realize that we could beat them another 10 times...but they still walked in and committed the horror. That highlight will be shown until the end of time, we just have to deal with it because there is nothing we can do to get away from that highlight. All the great records of the program, all the tradition, will never erase that game. I never thought I would ever see Michigan fans saying we should get revenge on appalachian state. maybe i am over reacting, but this seems so sad to me.

Normally I would say No but I live in NC now so I would love for UM to play App St and beat them like 70-14 or something.  I would make living with those barbs so much easier.

3rd saturday in Nov. should be free soon.   Seriously, give me a break,   It's the greatest upset in college football history,  let them have that.  We are still the most storied program in history and although we have payback to administer to a slew of teams, I don't see App St. as being on that list.  It would be like stating it's not really a fluke if we have something to prove.

Made me rethink my position - several times.

Point #1 - Michigan should not play a Div 1-AA team again.  It is completely boring and degrading to the ticket holders (myself included).  Lets not go there...

Point #2 - Except App State.  I need to exorcise this demon, but...

Point #3 - App State needs to come to us on this - not visa versa.  If they came and we turned it down - holy crap would we take a PR beating. Rather go there and beat them soundly.

Point #4 - Totally agree with "KickMe" - lets play historic "brand name" BCS teams from now on.  Home and away with Clemson - I'd take that.
