Way OT: What Songs Get You Pumped?

Submitted by NomadicBlue on

So, in an effort to get back into some sort of shape (other than round), I have started exercising again recently.  My wife even has me training for a half marathon in the spring (I can only comfortably do 4 - 5 miles right now).  I borrowed the wife's iPod for a run yesterday and she toldme , "I already have a good running mix in the Playlist."  Perfect (I thought).  Unfortunately, I ended up skipping over half of the songs - way too much cheesey pop and too many slower tempo songs.  I decided that I need my own playlist and started making a list off the top of my head this morning - a little more difficult than I thought.

So, I decided to tap into the knowledge of the MGoCommunity for some help.  Toss out some ideas people.  The only type of music that I am not really into is country (yes I even like pop despite what I said earlier - there's just a limit to how much Justin Timberlake should be on any single mix, and that limit is low for me).  Pretty much everything else is on the table - from metal to classical to drum corps.  The only thing you don't have to suggest is "Hail To the Victors" (I have a pretty nice extended live version of it from when the MMB visited my high school back in the day - circa 1996).

So pony up ladies and gentlemen, and let me know what gets you pumped up whether it be to work out, make a sale (ala Dwight Shrewt), or simply gets you amped for a game.  I'll start compiling a list for myself in a couple days, so keep 'em coming.

Also, if you are going to embed a song or video, please at least include the name somewhere - I can't view video or hear audio (from the internet) on my machine at work.

Thanks in advance for the help!

song we had for our basketball team was Self-esteem by the Offspring... I have zero idea why as it's not fitting at ALL for a HS BBall team...

But to this day a decade later.. still gets the blood boiling a bit.

I'd go with Breaking Benjamin - they have a number of good up tempo songs that have that little tinge of "grr!" to get ya motivated.

If we're just talking about pure pump up/go out and beat the world after the world talks sh!t about you it's gotta be Let the Bodies Hit the Floor.

And, as BlueintheFace said, The Victors always gets me jumping around and throwing my fist in the air.

Easy.

The Final Countdown.by Europe.

Though I won't disagree with Blueintheface's suggestion of The Holy Triumvirate.

But, The Final Countdown is all you need, unless this just makes you think of Gob, in which case, it might not work.

Lux Aeterna - Clint Mansell

Killswitch Engage (most songs)

Nas - Hate Me Now

Hans Zimmer - Soundtracks orchestrals, specifically Batman Begins and Dark Knight

30 Seconds to Mars - Attack

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - False Pretense

Singing in the Rain really gets my feet tapping.  Anything by NKOTB, but something about Please Don't Go Girl really gets me going.  And, of course, Modonna's version of Don't Cry for Me Argentina.

But if those aren't available... I'd go with Let the Bodies Hit the Floor

Nice try.  That's only like the 10th best Canadian-get-pumped-up song out there.

Ever hear of Bryan Adams "(Everything I do) I do it for You"; Alanis Morissette "Ironic"; Avril Lavegne's "Girlfriend" and any and every song by one Kick-Ass Rock-God band by the name of Nickelback???

Alright, alright, I know when I'm beaten.

I'm just not half the sad song man I used to be; In fact, this little contest leaves a shadow hanging over me.

At first this was such an easy game to play, but now I need a place to hide away.

However, I long to try again...tomorrow.

Can't go wrong listening to The Descendants, NOFX, The Bouncing Souls, Operation Ivy, Old Rancid, The Specials, etc. Good fast music, easily gets me pumped up.

I was hoping someone would throw in some old/new punk for a workout playlist!  Its the perfect music for running...the beat is perfect, its steady, fast and it makes you smile!

I agree on pennywise and face to face...have you ever heard the led singer from face to face's new group(probably not that new) Streetlight Manifesto?  If you haven't check it out...amazing stuff

Also If you are into short, fast past stuff check out goldfinger, MXPX or even New found glory's first album...all good stuff

I have three from them and I know there are a couple other very rare albums as well.

Master of Styles

Too Much Stereo

Receiving the Gift of Flavor

All three are good, but Too Much Stereo is my favorite simply because the songs are so catchy.

Have a harder time gettin in to it now (Fred is a horrible lyricist), but break stuff definitely gets it going.

Rage on the other hand, never gets old and is always at the top of my list.  Hard to find a bad RATM song.

and college i listen to LB all of the time... and when wes borland left for the 1st time they went right down the shitter... rumor has it that borland is back with the band now so they might be bearable to listen to again... as for rage, you're right there isn't a bad rage song... i saw them at the palace about 8 or 9 years ago and it was the most intense show it have ever seen...

I listen to a lot of trashy motivational hip-hop so it's not everybody's thing, but I recommend:

  • All the Above-Maino
  • Get By-Talib Kweli
  • Get My Gun-D12
  • Hate Me Now-Nas
  • Heart of a Champion-Nelly
  • I'mma Shine-YoungBloodZ
  • My Time-Fabolous
  • The Second Coming-Juelz Santana
  • 'Till I Collapse-Eminem
  • When the Music Stops-Eminem
  • X Gon Give it to Ya-DMX

...As well as anything by Immortal Technique. Even if you're not into hip-hop, Heart of a Champion is the best pump-up song in existance.

And this from someone who listens to classical music 90% of the time.

Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar

Anthrax - Be All End All

I don't really listen to music while working out anymore but they are great to get me going for workouts.
