OT: Alabama's 105-man roster?

Submitted by echoWhiskey on

Alabama compliance director Mike Ward says the NCAA's eligibility clearinghouse didn't accept certain classes as core courses for certification. Hill had been on the Crimson Tide's 105-man roster for preseason camp.

Am I the only one who sees 105-man roster and does a double-take.  I know you can have walk-ons and whatever, but damn that's a lot of football players.  Any limits on this stuff?

I think the rule is that you can only have 105 players on the roster for preseason camp. This allows for 20 walkons to participate.  A few weeks later, teams are allowed to add more walkons.

I remember there being walkon tryouts during my frosh year orientation (which occurred well after the start of camp).

You are allowed 105 for pre season camp.  Any time a player goes down, you can bring in a new player, but never more than 105.  When the school year starts, the roaster is allowed to expand to 125 or 130.  Thats why you see so many on UM roster now.  20 or so of those players have to workout on their own and not when the team works out.

Yep.  Although I'm not sure if there is any kind of limit after the season starts.

I don't understand why there is a roster limit for the preseason if there is not one (or a larger one) for during the season.  What's the point?
