Austin White thread: completely unacceptable

Submitted by Brian on

I have neg-bombed 4 people with 1000 or 500 point penalties as a result of posts made that said Austin White was/is a "lazy prick," a "diva," and other gems. DO NOT INSULT MICHIGAN ATHLETES, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW A GODDAMN THING.

This is everyone's last warning. Further offenses are one-strike bans.

and nice recap.

Although curious, I'm glad that I missed this mess. While initially surprised by the post, I really dig the way Brian was clear about his thoughts on the matter. This place is special and needs to stay that way.

It sucks waking up and coming on the boards to see Brian unleashing the hounds of hell on people and you have no idea why!

Maybe I should just drink more coffee and stay awake all night lurking....hell, Sept. 4th may come a little faster that way!

Wow, I go out on Thursday night and for once dont check this blog or anything else and I miss everything.  So, sorry if I am restating anything, but Austin is not transferring is the crux of the story.  And some bozo's came on and blasted him, real classy.  If any of that is wrong or I am missing anything, please let me know.  Thanks, learned my lesson, always check the blog.

I watched the BTN preview and then watched a movie and proceeded to bed.  I remember thinking that White looked good in practice, great running style and good cuts, but his blue helmet was going to make MGoBlogLand go nuts.  I for one thought he looked good and assumed he'd be a player in a couple of years.  Hope i'm right.

Way too much commenting on commenting on commenting...massive circularity leading to nothing but taking up space and pushing quality content further down

I, for one, thought Austin looked pretty darn good in the M-Drill I saw on the BTN last night.  Hope he stays and is successful.  Looked like he had a great RB build.

Kids that were talented enough to be stars in HS, and still are in College.

Kids that had to work really hard to be stars in HS, and still do in college.

Kids that were talented enough to be stars in HS, but not so in college.

It can be really, really tough for the third type to adapt to college, because they have to become the second type, which they're not used to at all.

So many kids (myself included) skate by in high school with little or no studying because high school material comes to them rather easily.  But, lordy lord lord, is college a different story (again, the case for me, and probably the large majority).

I tried to post this basic thought last night, but guess I was deleted, or screwed it up.

I don't know Austin White from Adam.    He may or may not have said something to someone about wanting out -- I have no idea.

I do know he is 18yo.  He is in his freshman year of college.  He is under a lot of pressure.  He is practicing all day.  He is tired.  He is probably frustrated since he's playing against guys that are better, bigger and stronger than he is.  How many times did you change your mind, or say something you regretted, or made a poor decision when you were 18 y.o?

Sorry to get preachy, but from where I sit the posts last night were not only in bad taste, and ridiculous, but so was the decision to put the kids name up there in the first place.  Honestly, what the hell difference does it make if his name is there last night, tonight or Monday morning?  Brian is right to negbomb those who said disparaging comments.  He oughta negbomb himself while he's at it since he's the one who let the name out to the masses at 10pm or so when little, if anything, about the information could do anyone benefit.

Sleep on it next time.

Totally agree.  I wanted to transfer out of Michigan in the first 6 months.  Never been out of the state of NY for a long period of time.  Gotten into a jersey shore fight with the gf and cut open my hand.  Called up mom and wanted to go home.  She called me a wuss and said toughen up and that I wouldnt be welcomed at home.  Stuck it out and stay a extra year for a double major.  Loved it.  I was 17, but these are kids and make decisions quickly and need time to reflect.

of heart must have been fast because his name is still on the roster... didn't turners name get pulled the next morning, even though there was chance that he could change his mind???

pardon me for continuing to offer up my unpopular comments, but this blog has become much too big to be posting irresponsible crap about Michigan players.

I am NOT talking about the stupid haters, but about this thread appearing in the first place.  Who are the "trusted" people who e posted the  "White transfer" piece of garbage?

I am sure some of M Go Blog's huge audience is based on a form of masturbation where one posts just to see ones own posts and the comments they draw., and that needs to be reined in.

Brian needs to take tighter control of the content.   Establish hand-picked "trusted posters" for main content..  Have someone closely monitoring the M Go Board, so it is not used as a tool.  Perhaps the board should not offer real time posting, but anyone can comment in real time on Page content posted by the "editorial staff".   "Internet" does not need to mean "wild west".

Anybody see the artilcle on how designers are giving their competitors' stuff to Snooki, so she will reflect badly on them?  How do we prevent Buckeys, Gophers or Spartans from planting  nastiness.  This blog is going to start to be a problem if it becomes a launching pad for rumormongering about Michigan players.   Dont think they are not aware of it.......Richard Ash briefly put up a fake Facebook message to tease us, and we bit on it, in case you didnt notice them noticing us.

I can feel the negbang already.

No, Geaux_Blue, the information WASN'T good if he didn't transfer, or if he hasn't yet decided to. "Goodbye Austin White" is NOT the same think as "White may transfer".

Further, did Austin White, Rich Rodriguez, Fred Jackson, or Bruce Madej want this information out there for public consumption? Clearly not. The only thing having the information on MGoBlog accomplishes, in this situation, is to give stupid assholes an opportunity to sound off on somebody they don't know in a situation that it may not even be warranted. In other words - it forces White further out the door. Good job keepin' on top of this one, buddy.

Magnus

It is a blog.  This is the internet.  Brian has a great thing going here, and the situation was handled appropriately.  I didn't see the original post, but from many accounts, White was/is at least considering a transfer.

The people who responded inappropriately were taken care of, whether by having their comments deleted or by being banned.  That's really all Brian can do.  Taking away regular readers' posting rights would be suicide for this blog, IMO.  It just needs to be monitored, and for the most part, Brian and the mods do a good job.

Well, there's a line here, and I'm not sure where it gets drawn.

Brian is upset (rightfully) and referenced people talking about situations they don't have full knowledge of. Would this not preclude posting this news in the first place?

You and I have repeatedly had this argument, and I don't expect some sort of agreement now, but I guess I wonder if the "good" of us knowing what Austin White might be doing outweighs the "bad" of his every mood shift getting spewed onto the internet for public consumption.

Magnus

Brian is upset (rightfully) and referenced people talking about situations they don't have full knowledge of.

Most people on here "don't have full knowledge of" 90% of the things about which they write.

I don't see why it's "bad" to know Austin White's mood shift when it involves him [allegedly] leaving the team.  That's not, "Oh, he's feeling sad today because his girlfriend broke up with him."  It's him spurning a scholarship offer to play at U of M.

Like someone said above, the information isn't the big problem here (if it's true).  The problem, to me, was the way certain people responded, and those comments/people were taken care of.

All these threads in rapid succession, every little piece of rumor and innuendo worthy of it's own thread, is pathetic IMHO.

This blog because of it's size, is now creating news where there is none. These young men on the football team cannot have a moment of indecision become public knowledge, without a barrage of garbage concerning them being put into print.

Tate Forcier for instance, there are people stalking the kid on the internet, waiting for any tantalizing tidbit of info, so they can rush over to Mgoblog and report the nonsense. It's just not good:(

If that's true, it's truly sad and those ppl need to get lives.  Seriously.

Football is exciting, but at the end of the day these are 18-22 year old kids.  If my life got to the point where it consisted of stalking Tate Forcier, I'd probably jump off a building.  Seriously, there's no dignity in that.

FWIW For those of use in western time zones that showed up late to the party, who got banhammered?

I liked the old policy of switching the banned users to the special avatar.  Although from the sounds of this thread, wiping the posts probably makes the world a better place.

and i wasnt even talking about white, it was more of a generalization of all the transfers who didnt want to work (like JT Turner, apparently). and it freeing up scholarships for people that actually want to work their asses off at Michigan. Whats done is done, and if i need to get neg bombed for people to get it im fine with it if it clears up the board

Posts? i only posted once. Maybe i didnt choose the right words but i seriously wasnt trying to take a shot at this kid. Im actually happy he's decided to stick it out. However, if you are lazy, and dont want to work hard, and have a poor attitude, im not going to feel bad when you decide to leave. that opens the door for players to use the scholly you are holding, guys that will bust their asses and "hold the rope"

i have no problem with the people that transfered out because they were homesick like McGuffie, or any other reason.

am i wrong for wanting a program where every player has bought in?

when its been done by 100 other people? and is a pretty common thought around here? people rip on boren for leaving, because he couldnt handle barwis' regimen, guys like him im talking about. im not talking about an 18 year old kid who is frustrated in football camp. I've been there and know what it feels like. I realize i posted it in the white thread so people think i was talking about him. It was more of a culmination of all the transfers out that couldnt handle the strength program.

when its been done by 100 other people?

This is like arguing that you shouldn't have been pulled over for going 80 in a 55 since you were in a pack of cars going the same speed. Nobody should be doing it, you're the one who got punished, suck it up.

essentially, which is why im perfectly fine with Brian doing it. if it helps in cearling up the rumor mongering im all for it.

what i dont need is hypocritical people talking down/negging me about something they've probably done themselves.

i love this board and have been lurking for like 2 years now.

I have no idea if Boren was working hard or not. I've heard he wasn't happy about having to "work" for his starting spot, but the reason I rip on him is because he went from Michigan to....OHIO STATE. DO YOU GET THAT? DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE?

How many other tranfers get ripped on? Mallet, because of the team itself's dislike of him. I can see that. But what about players like Threet and McGuffie?

Just...wow.

I am away for one day and this is what I come back to?

I think that the "news" about Austin was the straw that broke the camel's back for some people.  He unfortunately was on the receiving end of the cumulative ire of a fanbase that was already reeling from a tough week.  People love Michigan so much that they can't understand how someone could not want to be a part of the program, while forgetting that these are kids who are under a lot of pressure.

Hopefully he decides to stick it out and develops his talent to the fullest.

about this incident I learned there is "sticky" in which the mods show what was removed and why.

After reading that stickey, I'm amazed the thread last night ever got posted in the first place.  Seems posts are routinely removed for "unfunny", bar advice, inappropriate comments, etc.  But this post was let loose even though initially nuked by the same mods.  I'm confused.  Not only do I consider the decision to allow the post up a mistake, but the post was far more damaging than the benign posts routinely deleted.  Just don't see the point, the benefit, the reason to run it.

I think this site is a great resource, a great blog, a great community.  I don't comment on other sites.  But to keep it outside of mlive chat realm, some reasonable discretion should be exercised guys.
