OT-Steelers or Cardinals?

Submitted by letsgoblue213 on

Who is everyone rooting for in the Super Bowl? Michigan is represented pretty well in this game. The Cards have Steve Breaston, Alan Branch, and Gabe Watson, while the Steelers have LaMarr Woodley and Larry Foote. I'm going to have to go with Arizona since Pitt won a few years ago. Discuss...

Probably Arizona for the same reason, and because Kurt Warner is the classiest dude on the planet. But if Pitt wins I won't be upset.

I really wish Woodley and Foote would get traded from that garbage of a team I HATE the shitsburg Steelers, Hines Ward is THE biggest DBag in the NFL. Cards all the WAY!!!

Gotta pull for the underdog Cardinals. Partly so I can use it to boost my no-playoffs crusade, partly because, hey, underdog. BIG underdog. I mean, it's the Cardinals. What I really wish we could have is like a Cardinals-Bengals SB. But I generally like Pittsburgh teams, so another Steelers SB win wouldn't bother me at all.

I am cheering for the Steelers. They are actually a football team. I feel like the Cardinals were made up 10 years ago (yes, I know they've been around much longer).

I know, somehow they've managed to be around for eons without actually doing anything of historical significance. They've been uninspiring enough to have 2 cities give up on them. It's staggering.

Hines ward is the toughest player in the NFL. He lays out bigger defenders with clean hits and he is fearless over the middle. You have to me a man to go over the middle against a Baltimore D which features actual murderers who have a bounty on your head. It was actually referred to as "a Hines Ward" when Sweed layed out a DB on a clean hit. And the guy puts up season after season (12 now) with great stats in run oriented offense. Oh yeah, he has a superbowl MVP trophy (and ring) and he is a great team leader.

I am typing this in my #86 jersey. I would be one of the dislikable fans previously mentioned. Dislikable, presumably, due to jealousy of having a great team and a great franchise to root for. Sort of a dumb reason. The steelers play football the way any Michigan fan should appreciate: run the ball; tough D; tradition of winning; classy management... what's not to like?

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!

C'mon, the ownership and the coach are all class, but the team? Dirty dirty dirty. You can't avoid it when Troy Polamalu plays for you.

Don't get me started on the fans. They are the Miami/USC fanbase of the NFL. When the Steelers are good, they're everywhere. When they're bad (which I'll admit isn't often), you can swing many a cat in typical Steeler fan haunts and hit mostly newly-minted Patriots or Colts fans.

Pogue - you are just jealous. Your comment is ridiculous. The Steelers have had approx 5 losing seasons in my 37 years on the planet (a couple of those were 7-9) so... how would you know what Steeler's fans do when the team is bad... the team is NEVER bad (not since about 1971). The fans are NOT fair weather either - you would be hard pressed to find fans of any Pro team that identify with their team, or a city with its team for that matter, more than the Steelers and their fans/city.

Polamalu isn't dirty either. Where's your support for that?

and are thus a fitting representative of the Steelers fanbase. This has nothing to do with envy. You sound just like Ohio State fans prior to the '06 title game, including myself; all the hatred, all the criticism, is solely due to envy, not due to our own fuck-ups, mishaps, etc. at all. The Yankees are not hated just because they are "envied". Notre Dame is not hated just because it is "envied". Same goes for Ohio State, USC, and any other powerhouse. Teams are hated for far deeper reasons than that, and it usually has to do with the nature of that team's fanbase. The Steelers fanbase is arguably the most fairweather fanbase in all of pro sports, excepting maybe the Lakers. This is empirical fact, it cannot be denied.

Polamalu being dirty needs no support; people do not archive dirty hits for anyone unless they have a vendetta against them, but nonetheless, here's a dirty hit from his time at SC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac-JYp25Bx0

Dude is the king of helmet-to-helmets. All the praying in the world won't save him from being arguably the dirtiest defensive back in the NFL.

You're a Cincinnati fan, right? Steelers fans might be a bit off, but they're certainly not 'fairweather'. I like all the evidence you marshaled for that empirical fact, though.

I would bet one of my kidneys that you're either a Cleveland or a Cincinnati fan, and you're just pissed that that the Steelers have been doin' it prison-style to your boys for years. Polamalu, like a lot of hard-nosed football players, sometimes ends up hitting helmet-to-helmet whether he's trying to cause injury or not. If you're coming forward at full speed, your helmet might hit first. Also, if the tables were turned, you'd be stoked that your player laid out a Steeler like Ward did Keith Rivers with a perfectly legal block. Rodney Harrison these guys ain't. Polamalu especially seems like a pretty classy guy, in my opinion (I'll grant that Ward can be a bit grating.)

By the way, I'm a Lions fan*, not a Steelers homer. I will be rooting for Woodley and Foote Dogg on SBS though.

*Inasmuch as I pay attention to the Lions season after miserable season, kinda hate myself for doing so, and loathe them just a bit more than I love them.

EDIT: By the way, there ain't a damn thing helmet-to-helmet about that clip you linked to. Keep looking.

Palomalu gets his share of dirty hits, but I can't think of another Steeler in recent memory (10-15 years?) that had a rep of being dirty. If he makes the Steelers "a dirty team", then we may as well call your Bengals "criminals" because they employed Chris Henry.

And your argument is that there are more Steeler fans when they are good? Show me any fanbase in the entire fucking world where that isn't true. I grew up in the Northeast - I literally didn't meet a single Patriot's fan in 18 years of living our there. The Red Sox weren't a "national team" until 4 years ago. Fuck, look at Michigan basketball - they couldn't pay people to fill Chrisler, and now there are so many that want to go that we have people complaining about losing their seats. We lose one more Big 10 home game, I'll bet you cash money that problem stops.

"but I can't think of another Steeler in recent memory (10-15 years?) that had a rep of being dirty."

Carson Palmer is calling you from his rehab facility.

I actually have no ill-will towards the Steelers. I think living in a small, mostly illiterate, town insulates me from the bandwagon fans since there are no transplants or other connections to the area.

Ward is almost never penalized or fined. He is a clean and punishing hitter. The Ravens hate is guts b/c he isn't scared of them and he absolutely rips them up. They, and you, can enjoy watching him go for Super Bowl MVP #2

My dead grandmother had family from Pittsburgh. she always rooted for them. Since Detroit doesn't have professional football i've had a minor interest in Pittsburgh since they mirror the D in a few interesting ways and the aforementioned grandmother business.

I know a ton of Shitsburg fans and there by FAR classy in any means, and Hines Ward is the biggest D bag in the NFL like I stated above and should never be a HoF WR but anyways, Envy wouldn't really be the word, the Shitsburg Steelers aren't much to envy, Patriots,Cowboys,49ers are teams to envy but Steelers?? LMAO right!! good thing were all Michigan fans tho right?

Best record in the NFL during the Super Bowl era......5 SB titles in 6 SB appearances....in an era where there is 50 percent turnover every year in the playoffs, Pittsburgh has qualified for the postseason in 12 of the last 17 years, 6 of the last 8 and four of the last 5......an army of fans across the globe (no other team, for example, gets sent as many group photos from members of the armed forces as Pitt does) that makes road games a neutral feild....a constant stream of HoF players over the last 40 years.....an amazing front office.....amazing owners who know how to win without going the Jerry Jones/Daniel Snyder route of trying to buy titles.....so much success the franchise has had only 3 head coaches since 1969.

Oh, and, oh yeah.....the franchise is heading to another Super Bowl.

If thats something not to be envious about, I wonder if you know what the word means.

Anyway, I am sure you're a brown, bengal or lion fan, so enjoy the draft in April. It will go downhill from there.

Cards, because the Skins beat them this year.

Not to mention, good God almighty do I hate the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Especially western Pennsylvania. Terrible, terrible drive on the Turnpike to get up to AA from Maryland.

Speaking of Ohio...

This Pogue Mahone guy needs to go... like NOW. It's like inviting one of Bin Laden's underlings to Washington just to be civil.

If you give me a choice between reading posts -written in complete sentences no less - from a reasonable Buckeye fan or another "hai do u now when DC hired? hope rex ryan come b-more he g8 DC! r we gonna win the BCS next yr? thx" post from a Michigan fan I'll take the Buckeye.

and any other OSU fan that doesn't troll is obviously welcome on here. Could the same be said on a Buckeye forum? I have no clue (never been on one), nor does it matter.

As crazy as it seems, I actually appreciate the view from enemy territory. It's refreshing, and it breaks the monotony of watching U of M fans bitch at each other.

Guess I just don't trust them... even recently there's been so many instances of "wreck their site for the glory of the sweater vest" that I just instantly want Brian to can their damn Buckeye asses...

But hey, if he gets ChiTown and Dex's approval, I guess it should mean something... they're certainly around here a lot more than me and it seems that not a single thread goes unseen by their WLA eyes.

Also, since I finished reading "WAR AS THEY KNEW IT" the OSU hatred is burning as bright as ever... That book made me even MORE pissed off about the last few editions of THE GAME.

damn Buckeyes...
