Class of 2010: The New Numbers

Submitted by Seth on

The 2010 Michigan Football roster has been released. As with last year, I just happened to be on MGoBlue.com, mid-Diary, when it was put up. Either this is an amazing coincidence, or I spend way too much time making MGoDiaries.

If you're anything like me, you like to sit around imaging incoming freshman in their proper numbers becoming awesome (or just have a worrisome obsession with numeric accuracy in your NCAA dynasties). As you imagine the Class of 2010 winning Big Ten Championships and Heisman Trophies, and wrecking people wearing scarlet shirts with gray hats covered in bird poop, may your imaginations now reflect accurate jersey numerals.

Discussion:

Not as many interesting picks as last year.
  • Teric Jones is listed at safety, which, okay, a 5'9 converted tailback to cornerback is now at safety when cornerback depth is – we know this – terrifying. That just made me so much more comfortable with safety. Actually, it did.
  • Moundros is listed as "FB/LB" – he will try to earn a linebacker spot in Fall. If he makes it, expect to not see a fullback very much next year (RR at WVa. used to use walk-ons here but only one other guy, junior John McColgan, is listed at FB).
  • Justin Turner is listed at 6'2, 198, and a cornerback. He is also a redshirt freshman, by the way, for those ready to yell "bust" or demand a position switch.
  • Brandin Hawthorne, a linebacker before, is listed at Safety. I believe he is on the depth chart for Steve Brown's old position, the "Meat Raw" or "Spur" or "Spinner" or "Deathbacking Deathbacker of Dealt Doom" spot, since other guys mentioned this spring at Spinner were Thomas "Prison Abs" Gordon and Mike Williams, both listed as "S."
  • Ricardo Miller, as we learned in Spring Ball, got 82. Prediction based on zero evidence other than pixie dust and dreams: those digits eventually work their way down to a much smaller number.
  • In case one being 6'3, 248 and the other being 5'11, 171, isn't enough to tell Terry Talbott from Terrence Talbott, the elder/larger/DT one is 96, the younger/more slender/CB one is 22.
  • Six of the 33 walk-ons (not including Kovacs) are safeties. These include Zac Johnson, Jordan Reilly, Floyd Simmons, Matthew Cavanaugh, Jared Van Slyke and Karl Tech. The scholarship safeties are Cam Gordon, Vlad Emilien, Brandin Hawthorne, Thomas Gordon, Teric Jones, Carvin Johnson, Marvin Robinson, Josh Furman, Ray Vinopal, Jordan Kovacs and Mike Williams. That's four linebackers, a converted RB/CB, four true freshmen, a former walk-on, and a terror.
  • Dominique WareThe shortest man on the roster is 5'6 Vincent Smith. The second-shortest is a 5'7 walk-on named Dominique Ware. He plays defensive tackle. He has a mustache for Michigan. Is this the most obvious reincarnation of Donnie Warner ever?
  • Also on Ware's profile is a link to a contest to win a Michigan-painted Deuce Coupe at the MSU game for buying $X worth of Adidas gift cards. If anyone wins this, can I have it?
  • Former preferred walk-on QB Nader Furrha wasn't on the roster. Is he done? His bro's still around.

If he's gone, I kind of understand. Last year the QB depth chart was thus:

1. True Freshman who arrived in Spring

2. True Freshman who arrived in Fall

3. DEATH

4. Coner

This was very very scary. We could only hope that Forcier or Robinson could be effective. The performance we got from Forcier was at the extreme plus end for 2009 expectations. Had things gone horribly wrong, Furrha might have been as high as Option C, with a solid chance of Options A and B necessitating replacement.

This year the QB Depth Chart reads:

1A. Sophomore Potential Superstar

1B. Sophomore Potential Star with 1 year of starting experience

3. True freshman who was the top QB recruit in the country

At this point, Furrha would be solidly on the Scout team, behind two highly regarded players his own age, and one even higher-ceiling-ed guy a year younger - chance of seeing the field: zero. He may have simply said "this isn't worth it," and gone about earning a degree from Michigan, with maybe a few extra-curriculars that don't become your entire life. Or maybe he's considering transferring to a place where he will have the opportunity to play -- Furrha did have scholarship offers from High-MAC-level schools.

Richard Ash is 6'3 320?!? Big Will is only two inches taller and 10 lbs heavier. I'd be interested to see how Ash's body develops in the program, say, in a year.

There have been rumblings of Jibreel Black possibly seeing the field this year, btw.

have you tried the field turf?  it's exquisite this time of  year.  Mr Schilling will be your waiter and will be with you shortly.

...has been using his time wisely since enrolling early.  Listed by Scout at 256 and Rivals at 262, he's already up to 280 Barwisized pounds.  After a redshirt year, he'll be ready to compete for a starting job in his RS Fr and RS So years.

I noticed that two of our incoming "midget" CBs (Talbott and Avery) are listed at 5'11" (instead of 5'9" / 5'10").  If accurate, that seems like good news.

I hope Ricardo earns that #1.  He seems to be about as all-in as anyone with all the recruiting he does.  Hopefully he backs it up on the field and we see a real #1 again.

i can't wait to see what it says on the back of the talbotts' jerseys.  also, didn't they call marvin robinson "prison abs" too?

got a scholarship, right?  If so, he really shouldn't be lumped in as a walkon, even by omission (Six of the 33 walk-ons (not including Kovacs) are safeties).  Guy at least deserves the "former walkon" monikor.

Um, okay, everyone needs to relax the Kovacs autodefense triggers.

When I said "(not including Kovacs)" that was because to put six safety walk-ons out of 33 roster walk-ons in context, it is important to note that the former walk-on safety everybody knows is neither one of the six nor the 33.

so I'm really surprised I don't know the answer to this...but either I missed something about Conelius Jones in the offseason and this is correct, or this list (and the website) have accidentally omitted him.  I looked through this list a few days ago and didn't see him.  Nobody mentioned it here in the comments so I just may be googling him to make sure there wasn't some offseason news I missed about him not qualifying or something like that.

UPDATE: I fail.  Or rather, Jones failed.  I have found my answer on this.
